Niche in the shower: How many did you use?
Comments (18)I used crema europa limestone for most of my shower and used a 4" border of granite (antique labrador) around the ceiling, and another 8" band of the granite around the base of the wall, and a pair of 3/4" bands of the granite 6ft up the wall. Due to the porosity of the limestone, I chose to use labrador antique on base and back of the two niches in the shower. Also, I used a slab of the labrador antique on the 5 ft bench in the shower. If you choose to use the limestone for your niche, you may want to investigate how sealants my help prevent staining. Due to my concern about staining the limestone, I used the same granite for my water closet floor and main bathroom floor as well as on the vanity's counter top and part of the backsplash. Comments (11)warning - old post that i have a question about - @palimpsest - I want to add a long shelf in my alcove tub/shower combo vs. having a niche installed. Sounds like exactly what you did in your bathrooms. Would you mind posting some photos + a brief explanation of how it was installed? My contractor and I have discussed a couple ideas, but I’m still looking for the best way to do this. Thanks!...See MoreDo you prefer an open shower or more private shower?
Comments (33)I'm weird about space, so for me it would depend on the room. In our recent remodel, we took a foot from the kitchen to make a powder room into a three quarter bath. I used Ella Cambria for the vanity top, white fixtures, white tile and glass for the shower. The room is only 5'x8' so it's cozy and private. I clean the glass weekly with equal parts vinegar and Dawn, since DH never uses the squeegee. In a space as big as rockybird's, I'd feel cold when I looked out into a large open area. I would remove the shower head on the left wall, extend the wall that's adjacent to the vanity until only a 3-foot opening remained at the left end of the shower. No door or curtain needed. The valve and even and an additional hand-held shower wand could go on the newly extended wall near the opening. I'd use plain tile in the shower and put the expensive tile on the outside of the wall adjacent to the sink, so that I could enjoy it while brushing my teeth, putting on makeup, soaking in the tub, etc....See MoreSubway tile shower: niche 3/8" higher than 2nd niche. Noticeable?
Comments (9)I think this is what you are saying. Your niches are not like the original image but they are lined up in the middle of a row of tiles. But within that row, one niche is 3/8" higher than the other, like this: It would bug the heck out of me that they didn't start on a full tile in the first place, but that's usually how it ends up most of the time, like A or B. On top of that there is the3/8" height difference. I would have to compensate for this at the very least but using grout that matched the tile so I wasn't visually measuring that all the time. However, I was trained to differentiate between 0.5 of a mm for my job at one point, so 3/8" is huge to me visually. Not so with many people. Why do you know about it? Did you notice it yourself? If you did I think you have to have him change it. But if not, use grout that minimizes it....See Morehouseofwindsor2
