It looks like your sofa is in front of an opening. Is that correct? If so, that would not work for me. Might suggest that you place one of your sofas facing the fireplace with a couple of chairs flanking it. Coffee table could go between sofa and fireplace. Since your living room is rather long and linear, you might be able to place your other sofa so as to create two seating groups. You migh consider placing the sofas back to back with a parsons table in between. Good luck!

Agree with @Norwood Architects that couch in front of doorway to kitchen doesn’t work for me either. Is the new rug larger or smaller than existing rug? I was thinking also of couch facing FP especially since TV there. The second couch could back up to window forming L & one recliner in left corner by FP angled to be facing into room. Stuff in that corner would need to be moved out. Looks like that doggie bed needs to stay along front of window for that family member - I see the back end of doggie in one pic so looks like s/he uses the window for viewing pleasure. Maybe bed can slide down towards FP. The other recliner could be set in left corner by entry from stairs - across from where mirror is. Add a lamp & side table to that recliner & you have a nice reading nook & another spot to sit & watch TV. This leaves 2 couches & 2 reclliners in the room for seating for 8

You do not block doorways with furniture. Post a to scale plan and maybe you will get . The room measurements are okay but you have windows doorways to contend with that makes the space much smaller .

Wow - that was fast! Thank you all! The couch was across from the fireplace and NO it was not permanently blocking the dining entry - I just got it out of the way since the new couch was arriving early this morning - so everything is here now and I will play around with all your suggestions and post later (need my kiddos to wake up and help me move the pieces! @rogerssic Sliders! You need furniture sliders! They make them for moving furniture on solid flooring as well as on carpeting. They will allow you to be able to move so many things around independently - as long as you can lift corners of pieces by yourself, you’re all set.

Still a work in progress but not looking too bad! Thanks for all the advice - I'll be living with it for a few days and then putting up a Christmas tree so everything will likely move!! Oh Well - happy holidays to all. And thanks again!

How much space is behind the sofas in the current configuration?

No help here, but i love that the dog has a matching sofa.

@cubby14 - there is 2.5' behind both sofas - not ideal for walking space but can't put sofas any closer to the coffee table

@rogerssic It’s looking pretty good & I do like the 2 sofas. I’m suggesting tweaking a bit because what I envision with current arrangement is people needing to climb over others to get in & out because the seats are too close together. I think that the entire arrangement needs more space in the middle of it so I’m suggesting a way to move pieces apart a bit. I think it’d work better if the sofa in front of window is moved closer to window - even if just 18” leaving a foot between sofa back & windows. Symmetry isn’t a rule so if there’s adequate space behind sofa back & kitchen entry then just move the one sofa back to window - otherwise move it toward window a bit too. Looks like the rug is plenty large enough to keep the front legs of both sofas on it and still move them both back. The 2 chairs could be moved away from table between them & back from sofas. Are those recliners? It looks like they need some room in front of them to recline. That’s a great spot for Walter - he can sit up & look out the window & see what’s happening in the dining room all without leaving the comfort of his bed!

Thanks all - my daughter said the same thing about not enough walking space. @KW it is good to know that symmetry isn't a rule...I get hung up on that; do you mean the couches do not have to be symmetrically across from one another? Also, what are the thoughts on the coffee table - do I use it for one or both couches (of course it is only actually used for feet in my house!) I will try to move couches back for more accessibility. @houssaon I did have the couches as an L but then could only fit on chair - and yes, they are recliners. Thanks again...

You now have a lot of seating, but neither sofa faces TV directly - so a lot of neck- turning or unsupported backs. Probably is fine for kids but not so much me. Plus how far away are the chairs?

@rogerssic Symmetry or lack of it depends on the effect wanted. I think symmetry is very formal looking so sometimes it’s needed. But, what’s more important and easier to think about and see is balance. That is, are the pieces in the scape balanced and not all weighted to one side. I can’t see, from my crude calculations, why the 2 recliners can’t fit with couches in an L formation if the couch with back to window is moved closer to window. Both chairs can be angled toward center of room. I see one chair in front of DR entry opening, at left side of couch facing TV & the other close to corner at left of FP. Leave the floor lamp there for that recliner & move the other pieces out. The chair needs a small side table too. About the coffee table, it can be in front of either couch but maybe fits better in front of couch along window bc of the 1 recliner across from it. If the folks on the couch facing TV & FP need feet rests, pouffs are wonderful & portable things! Might need a small table in area between that couch left end & recliner & I think it will fit. This arrangement works out great in my head so I hope it sounds feasible enough to try out. In my mind’s eye, it’s a very balanced arrangement!😁

Actually, everyone is too far from the TV for good watching. Maybe we start by moving the longer sofa table into the foyer; looks like it may be better proportioned for that stairwell wall. Then the TV can go right of the fireplace on a wall mounted articulated arm so you can adjust it.If it will fit, the bench and pillows can go on the left side of the FP. I would put the sofas in an "L" so one faces the TV and the other has its back to the window. More or less flank the dining room door with the two loungers. Put the armchair and floor lamp in the corner by the mirror for a reading area or a place to chat on any devices.
