black slab/tile to complete my fireplace

We had our fireplace redone with marble but the interior section still needs a solid matte black tile or stone to complete it. I cannot find a good option anywhere. Are there any out there that I should be looking at?

That really should have been covered with the same stone used for the rest of the fireplace. Introducing a different stone at this point is likely not the best choice.

I recommend adding a glass door that has a frame specifically designed to cover that black metal. There are a wide variety of custom options for these with many finish choices to work with your decor. Here are some examples:

Thank you for your response! This is a manufactured fireplace, I was told changing the doors would be complicated, is that true? Would your company be able to help us, we are in San Diego

Pricklypear, the backsplash will be the same 4"x4' honed calacatta gold tiles I'm having installed above the black absolute granite and the stove. h-w-m, the pulls I think I've finally settled on are oil rubbed bronze pulls from the Restoration Hardware Outlet (they're Asbury 3" pulls). I wanted something that went with the stove's black knobs and would somewhat tie in the black absolute with the calacatta marble top on the wall unit. Thanks to everyone else. It's crazy what you can find when you look hard for it.

Looks awesome! I do though, have to admit I don't understand the black hole. It doesn't appear like it would, however I'm not there and it's not my choice either ^_^ My walls will be Lancaster Whitewash by Benjamin Moore, and I'm doing Black Ink on the mantel and surround, because I love the soft black with the blue undertones. It's a nice contrast against the black of the gas insert. Ours is an open concept, foyer, living room and kitchen all one big room. Foyer being more elongated, then you walk into the rest. My absolute dream, is to find an old surround, maybe with a double mantel and mirror in it, and remove this new surround with mantel. I dig antiques...lol

My concern with both shiplap and the cement tile is that they may quickly become passe. Also, as your supposed, the patterned tile with the shiplap and beam shelf may be too busy. The shiplap will effectively be a stripe pattern and the tile's pattern below it can clash (not always, but frequently); line mixing stripes and plaid, it can be done, but with great care. If you have your heart set on the shiplap and the tile, what about using it above the mantle with gray subway tile in stack set as the surround, then use the cement tile as the kitchen backsplash?

^ isn't good advice. Asbestos isn't harmful unless it friable or airborne. Abatement will be expensive, risky, and unnecessary. Cut wet, no risk, no expense, no airborne asbestos, no test, no danger.
