Kitchen Tile Help

I've always hated this backsplash, builder special that isn't terribly flattering but it still exists because I can't decide on what to replace it with and could use some help.

1. Where would you tile up to? I've done an overlay with different sections (A,B,C,D). I was initially thinking to the ceiling but something tells me it will look odd without the cabinets going to the ceiling (10ft).

2. What sort of pattern/color would you go with? The place has a modern vibe and I've tried to capture the adjacent room for coloring/vibe.

Appreciate any advice or opinions.

I think you are right that the tile should not go to the ceiling. I like the sage green with your gray counters. Tht's what I have in my kitchen and I am very happy with the way it looks.

I think it needs to go underneath the cabinets but no more than that - not on the sides of the window and not over the window. I quite like what is there now. It meshes well with the modern vibe and looks good with the counters. If you can match it, I'd just add a few more rows to it.

Our bathroom is long and thin. We laid the tile floor diagonally. Running it the long way made the room seem even longer and thinner, running it the short way looked really odd (like a normal floor was cut off). Laying it diagonally was a really nice solution -- made the room seem larger while still have long enough rows of tile that they didn't look oddly cut off. I would suggest setting a couple rows of tile out on the floor in various directions in various places on the floor. I predict the answer becomes immediately clear to you.

The kitchen is pretty nice looking (until you see the stove/fridge setup which isn't quite ideal). The vintage cabinetry is lovely (although probably not as nice to actually use as it is to look at). I'd absolutely do something like beadboard. And beadboard would be better in the backsplash than peel and sticks. If you plan to sell in 5 years, peel and stick will reduce the value and overall impression of the house, but beadboard won't. Invest in a few power tools for your beadboard--either from Harbor Freight if you think it'll be just a few projects, or good ones if you think you'll end up doing more DIY jobs.

#1 or #2 would be perfect. Lay them length-wise to the room. If you could do 24x24 (which would look like this or 12x24, it would look better. 12x24 have to be laid in a 1/3rd (or less) offset. Like this: or you could do a stack layout if there is no cupping or bowing of the tiles these are a 8x36 BTW, if you go to an actual tile store, it can offer more choices and be cheaper. you're paying Lowes to be the middleman since they will order the tile from the same place you could go! Sometimes tile stores will have sales on lots that are leftovers. also check floor and decor and even Craigslist. people sell off leftover tile on there all the time.

I like A. I think the other tile options might look odd.

Although, due to the window being shorter, that space above it between the uppers looks like it needs something to fill that space.

What about simply raising the light fixture up a little? Well, I don’t know if it is simple, lol!

I like @rebunky’s suggestions, but would balance the left side of the window with tile ending at the same height as on the right. Raising the light fixture to add interest to the space above the window is brilliant!

Not related to your tile and not something you can change easily ... but why are the windows so short when you have 10 ft ceilings? I built last year and made sure all my windows were proportional to the taller ceiling heights. Your windows would have looked better if they were as tall as your kitchen cabinets. Just something for others who are reading this to think about if they are designing rooms with taller ceilings.
