Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 10/16
Comments (13)Last week I did great exercise-wise. And I started the weekend really strong with a very long 1hr and 45min swim (usually do 1hr) because it was the last day outside. But then I decided to take Sunday off when I got busy doing yard things so I didn't get a run in. And while I've managed to get weight lifting in every day, I missed out on swimming on Tuesday due to limited availability at my pool (reduced from 4 hours to now 1.5hrs) and conflicting meetings at work. I usually aim to alternate swimming and running days. I have kept up with running the other days and I'll plan to swim today. The other pool I was considering is really expensive ($71 for the first month, $55 for every month after), at least to me, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth spending that much money to have more flexibility in hours. The pool is inside a bubble so there's no natural light which doesn't sound as appealing. I would still have my year membership with the other pool, so this is additional cost. So that's my quandry right now. This weekend was a bit frustrating food-wise with my stupid gluten intolerance. My husband is a pilot so he's been away a lot after my diagnosis. We joined friends at a bowling alley and he and the guys grabbed pitchers of beer without talking to me and then said he forgot when I said no to a glass. And then he tried to tell me it just had "traces of gluten" (he googled it) so I should drink it. I was annoyed because it feels like he's not paying attention at all and/or thinks I'm just overreacting (despite the doctor diagnosing me and telling me not to eat wheat). And then the part I dread the most: being pressured to pick a restaurant in an area I don't know. Thankfully we ended up finding a Mexican restaurant nearby that offered something that appeared gluten free (veggie fajitas on corn tortillas). Unfortunately I think there was some cross contamination (probably cooked on a flat top) so painful stomach cramps woke me up in the night to use the bathroom. My husband didn't wake up so he didn't even realize or acknowledge what gluten does to my body. I have no problem cooking gluten free on my own, but I dread social situations because of this. My husband also wants me to drive 4 hours to his MILs (on my own since he'll go right from his work base) for Thanksgiving weekend and I don't know what to do. Honestly, I want to tell him I'll just stay home instead. His family already struggles to provide vegetarian food and I think gluten free vegetarian food is just not going to happen, especially on Thanksgiving (think turkey, dressing, and sweet potatoes topped with non-vegetarian marshmallows). So I'll either starve or spend the weekend doubled over in the bathroom in pain. Anyhow, that's a lot of complaining! I'm stumbling a little this week, but will try to get back on track as best as I can....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/6
Comments (28)@pricklypearcactus I really do understand what you are dealing with-- and while it could be way worse as can be seen daily in the news, that doesn't change how it impacts your day to day. I went through a number of major work stressors in the period of time I allowed my weight to get out of hand -- a merger followed by a buyout then a move to another company with GREAT opportunities for me but very very long hours and periods of intense challenges. It wasn't until I started viewing my own health as every bit as important as my career, my team and the deadlines that I started to lose weight and return to a healthier life. The good thing for you is that you are aware and alert to the potential impact of your workload and stress-- I think that puts you steps ahead! Again, be good to yourself! Oh my @legomom23! We are all sisters in our food challenges-- I too find my balance leans way too heavily on fats and not enough on protein. I think I am pretty good on fiber but protein is definitely the struggle. I have only just been able to eat nuts again and I have definitely brought them back with glee -- I do like to include them in my diet because they bring in some minerals that are hard to get otherwise-- but really, I need to pull back on the quantity. I don't really think my fats are so out of control they are just way out of balance with my protein which is too low. I still struggle a bit with chewing meat and I was never a big meat eater. I do eat eggs and beans (not together!) a few times a week but I'm not much of a fan of tofu, tempeh etc. I'll need to add in some other sources of protein like quinoa and the higher protein vegetables and legumes. I was surprised to see how much protein is in wild rice-- something I love-- so I think I need to reeducate myself on good plant-based protein sources. My weight remains the same -- actually 1.2lb up from my lowest weight-- but I have maintained it. I have definitely lowered my calories and am very much back to my routine the last 2 weeks... and I have been more active. I can't explain the plateau. I started wondering if I needed to ADD calories but I don't think that's the issue. The only other thing I can point to is the diet pepsi. I am just about out of it-- and removed it from this week's shopping list so I guess I will see if removing it makes a difference. @gsciencechick I am so glad that you finally were able to go to the clinic! I appreciate the information you and @legomom23 have shared! We are all at different places in our journeys but still we all seem to struggle with some of the same challenges -- the information, experiences and support from everyone has been so helpful and I am inspired daily by all you share new recipes, new activities and your successes. ❤️🥗🥦...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/13
Comments (37)Just a few thoughts. I always tell myself that the best thing I can do is keep being there and listening no matter how uncomfortable everybody is. It takes a long time to start to be able to communicate when something like this has happened. Still the people need to know you're there and supportive as I'm sure you know. I'm blinking back tears just reading what happened and I cannot imagine how long it takes to even feel like a person can move on after that. They need all of our love and understanding and time... plenty of time and space to feel what they feel. I really really admire you for being able to continue in times of stress. In case I haven't said so before I tend to completely collapse. I'm working on it but I'm not the best at it. I've been struggling a bit with depression which is regular for this time of year for me. I keep trying to remind myself take another step to another little thing, it will add up. Not enough but it will add up. Those mysterious two pounds have stayed off. Unfortunately more have not joined them....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 12/11
Comments (13)Hello everyone! @Funkyart I hope you continue to feel better. It is a hard time of the year to not feel your best. There can be so much to do. ' @gsciencechick - that's a lot of fiber! I guess as a vegan it might add up faster. If I'm really trying I can get to 35-40 but that's chia, flax, or basil seeds and berries in my smoothie, a bean and veggie soup, and lots of veggies in a big salad. I have a bar I eat called Papa Steve's no junk bar that has a lot of fiber, I think 16 grams. If I do all of that in one day, maybe I could get that high. My issue is a lot of fiber comes with carbs, and I can only do so much at one time without a spike. But, no one seems to disagree that fiber is great for you, so it's a great focus. I had my health coach meeting this week, which ended up being a lot like a therapy session. I'm really getting in my head about all this contradictory nutrition and weight loss advice. So, we are going back to the basics. Walk 10,000 steps a day, resistance training 3-4 times a week and do my best to control glucose spikes with the healthiest food choice available to me at that time. I started rationalizing food as their macros, instead of the overall health benefit (in my mind) No one can seem to agree on a lot of things, but for me, if I believe I'm doing the right thing, then it's a lot easier to do. But once you go down the rabbit hole, there are a lot of opinions on what is healthy. And it can make a girl crazy! @Zalco/bring back Sophie! - those are parts I am trying to strengthen. I can see some improvememts already, and that is making it a lot easier to stick with it. I have found some exercises I enjoy doing, put my dumbells in front of the TV, and just go. I'm very happy to have become mostly consistent with that. Hope everyone has a great week ahead!...See MoreFunkyart
