Care to share pictures of your house with darker siding?
Comments (11)Ladonna and Jaymielo, Thank you for the nice comments. Both your houses are beautiful. LaDonna, your doors are gorgeous and what great porches. Jaymie, love the gables and the beam accent trim. The stone and paint color on your siding really complement each other. We went back and forth on colors, we did the soffits and trim before we settled on house color so decided to match up to the roof and hoped for the best. We weren't sure about having roof trim different than the main house trim, but are happy with the results. We may leave the cedar shingles natural with a clear coat or do a semi-transparent mahogany stain. Heck, I'm just glad to get the last of the Tyvek covered over! Comments (13)the good thing is when your house is at the beach, you don't need to try so hard. you don't need signs like 'this way to the beach' or 'manatee crossing'. you dont need lamps shaped like anchors. all of those items are for people whose houses are NOT at the beach. i recommend under decorating. under beachifying. nothing fussy, everything easy care. don't worry about your kitchen right now... stock up on olive oil and fresh veg, a good knife or two, make a great grill space outside. thats the good news. the bad news is even if you bought the place full cash and you have no mortgage, a second home is expensive. doubling all your utilities, your taxes, your trash pick up, etc etc etc. you'll be amazed how much it costs when you have to paint twice as often, replace roofs twice as often, its endless. don't spend a penny on your perfectly nice kitchen that you don't need to spend because it isnt quite the right color at this time. when things need to be painted, soon enough. anyway, thats more advice than you asked for, but there it is. enjoy your house near the beach. we've had ours for 18 years now and havent regretted a moment....See MorePlease help renovated dated beach house kitchen/living room!!
Comments (4)Congratulations on your new vacation home! We just redid our kitchen/living area at our small lake house. We also did it on a tiny budget. Our biggest savings was getting cabinets used that someone else didn't want. You have an easy straight run of cabs there. If I were you, I'd haunt Craig's List, facebook marketplace, Habitat's Restore, etc. and see what you can find. I could have done ours 3x over with great cabs I found online. I remember kicking myself for not waiting a bit as someone was advertising an almost new set of cabs from a basement kitchen they were removing for $500! Solid wood drawers and everything. As it is, I was able to get a decent set of maple lowers with large drawers (drawers rock!) and white uppers for about $600 total. Don't put new counters on those old cabs. At least replace the lowers. I def. agree about removing that weird peninsula thingy. Have you thought about adding cabs where the white stand alone cabinet is now? I'm not clear about whether you are changing the flooring? In terms of paint, I always have a general idea of paint colour in my head when I start a reno whether I know it or not. If you haven't already, start a pinterest page and gather images of similar spaces you love and then you'll get an idea of the direction you want to go. I agree with your husband about the ceiling. It will be the centre piece of your room. However, the paint colours you are considering are not going to do it any favours. The blues are too cool and are going to make the space feel smaller and lower the ceiling. Personally, I'd do everything a warm, neutral white (Steam by Ben Moore?). Before you do anything with the wood stove bricks, check and see what you need for safety. Our new wood stove could be closer to combustible sidewalls than our old one, but each stove has its own specs. Comments (12)I would stain the wood beam and corbels a dark brown. Here are some Benjamin Moore colors I think would be nice. I found that the darker colors seemed to look better than some of the lighter ones I originally picked. With any one of these, there is an opportunity to add more color in the soffit and gable ends. I sampled Storm Cloud Gray on the garage....See Morejayapple21
