Leggy / droopy Peperomia argyreia help

I have a leggy / droopy Peperomia argyreia aka watermelon pepperomia. It's in a 5 inch pot with houseplant / topical potting mix that sits in front of a southeast facing patio door that has sheer curtains all day. The plant is watered when the soil is dry. Room temperature is about 70F. The plant produces small leaves which mostly just shrivel up and die. What do I need to do to have a healthy plant?

can we see a broader pic of all the plants near it ..

its classic signs of etoliation.. aka.. elongation due to lack of proper light ... but one would not expect such in a south facing window.. unless the issue is the shears ....

might need to find a different spot for it.. or if they are all suffering.. maybe you will need to open the shears once in a while ...

though to our eye.. a shear might SEEM to let in enough light.. that doesnt mean its USEFUL light to a plant

finally .. is there a heat register under the window.. and is blasting this thing now that the furnace is on... see PS ...

ps: BTW.. in every post.. tell us w2here you are.. big city name .. e.g. maine winter light is not like tampa winter light.. etc .... its usually not an issue with houeplants.. but in this case.. it might be ...

I'm in Massachusetts. There is a ceiling heat vent sort of near the plants but I don't have the heat on yet.

I've had the watermelon pepperomia since the Spring and it hasn't done too well. I have re potted it and moved it around to various spots for different light intensities (shady, bright indirect, etc).

I can get a small compact full spectrum light if not enough light / wave length is the problem.

I am afraid I'm as guilty as anyone here when it comes to having some plants die on me. There has been a lot going on in my life recently and unfortunately many of my plants have suffered. I lost one of my favorite streptocarpuses and also one of my chimeral African violets that I've had for many years. I have a saying that many plants have given their lives for my education. When I started out growing plants I killed most of them out of ignorance. Unfortunately now when I kill a plant it's usually more out of neglect, which is more of an embarrassment. :o( Fortunately my African violets and gesneriads are pretty tough plants and take quite a bit of abuse before they succumb. Life looks like it is going to be a lot less eventful and return somewhat back to normal. I know, famous last words. lol But hopefully my plants will soon reap the benefits. Larry PS - Yes, Cena does know where I live. She was nice enough to go out of her way to visit my wife and me one afternoon when she was in the area. We then showed her around our house that we affectionately refer to as the North Denver Conservatory. It is a great house for plants with its wonderful windows. Cena was quite gracious with her complements. I love you too Cena.

John, I love how your scheff looks! I really like the thick trunk, thats what I'm trying to achive with mine. I want it to be bushy but I want the lower half to have a thick trunk so that its stays sturdy. Great Job! Pug, your mango tree looks great! It doesn't even look like the same plant! How long until you think you'll be eating yummy mangos? Housplant, I love maple trees, I bet your neighbors are very lush! As for my scheff, there hasn't been much change. No new growth after its burst of growth when i prunned. But the new growth in the photos above have grown about as big as the mature leaves! Its looking great! I'm just curious as to why there is no new growth. Possibly its dormante after the burst of growth and plus its winter so...you know how it goes. :) But if anyone has any other ideas as to why theres no new growth...shed a light! Ashley

I repotted this today, on its' way to stay in greenhouse for at least the next couple nights, expecting frost, or very near to it. The soil had sunk a lot. Surprisingly, the pancake of roots at the bottom was not huge. I chopped it off with a shovel. The Cordyline 'Red Sister' is a cutting I just added to the pot when I finished. The tallest part was too tall to be inside this winter, so it came off and got stuck in this pot. This was a cutting about 4 months ago. It's developed a great root system already. 'Janet Craig Compacta' has been repotted upright. It was leaning for a while to develop this cool zig-zag. 'Hawaiian Sunshine' to the right. A big cutting of variegated lucky bamboo (D. braunii/sanderiana.) It's in water with Coleus stems for tonight, until I can decide which pot it should join.

I'm not familiar with this lovely species, but although it may be very difficult to make it happy, that doesn't mean you can't try if you really want to make it work. Just don't feel bad if you don't succeed with this plant, because there are many beautiful plants that are much more forgiving of missteps while you're learning how to help them thrive. Back to your question: the pot absolutely needs to drain completely after watering. Roots need oxygen, and if they are always wet they rot and can't take in water anymore, and the plant gets sick and eventually dies. If you water in tiny amounts so the soil never really gets wet, salts build up in the soil and prevent the roots from absorbing water and the plant gets sick and eventually dies. If your pot is plastic you can drill drain holes; if not you'll need to find a pot that already has them. Roots can breathe in moist soil but not in wet soil. My plants like to get very dry and then get a good soaking, so you'll have to get tips on exactly how to strike the right balance with your baby from Those Who Know. I'm rooting for you (pun unintended)!

Your mix is based on a large fraction of coir, which is chemically and physically different enough from peat that for best results allowances for those differences must be made. One glaring potentiality is the fact that phenolic compounds in coir are allelopathic (phytotoxic/ poison to plants) for a large number of plants.

How do you determine when it's time to water the plant, and how deep is the soil in the pot?
