Sale at Heirloom Roses
Comments (9)I didn't notice the email and only found out about the sale this afternoon when I checked GW. It's pretty late in the season, and hot here to plant, but if there is a sale, I can be tempted. Fortunately some I would have ordered, such as Spencer and The Last Dance were sold out, but one I have been wanting wasn't. The one rose I ordered is the old damask Kazanlik, still used for production of attar of roses. Damasks like hot dry climates (even hotter than mine in the areas of desert in Iran where they thrive), so it is a good choice for me eventhough my area has a mediterranean climate. Kazanlik is a once-bloomer but that doesn't bother me at all. I have other once-ers and they are lovely. This one fits in with other more primitive oldies and species that I favor. Not just for their beauty but for their value to local wildlife as shelter and food sources. Two others on the 50% off list (meaning at a price of $8.50 per band) that I can highly recommend are Cassie and Omi Oswald. Cassie blooms here most of the year and does so with only infrequent light applications of fish emulsion and little water. A superb and healthy rose that covers itself in tiny, white, sweet smelling flowers. Omi Oswald has almost single flowers of pale yellow to white. They are beloved by multiple types of bees, and since these poor creatures are in decline, a plant they like is a good thing in my garden. The blooms look like hibiscus flowers, sporting a little pompom in the center, which is very cute. Omi Oswald hasn't shown a trace of either rust or mildew and blooms repeatedly. Even now in August heat. Foliage looks excellent. Very low maintenance, needing below average food and water and is quite happy. Mine does have shaded roots due to being planted in the middle of a spreading natal plum. Melissa...See MoreOT: Heirloom Roses Sale
Comments (4)I buy from Heirloom regularlly. Most of their bands are small but healthy. I usually repot them into a gallon sized pot and let them size up before putting in the garden. THis is because I often loose them under bigger plants in the garden until it is too late. I also lost some to a heavy freeze when I was away last fall, and they were still in the gallon pots. However, I have many lovely roses that are hard to find elsewhere bought over the years from Heirloom. I just ordered 2 Magic Meidiland for my daughter in Maine who has had fantastic luck with Mystic Meidiland. And for myself I Ordered Cameo Perfume, Eiffel Tower, Limelight,Tawny Tiger. I would have ordered more if I had any room left! I used to have EIffel TOwer and it is incredibly fragrant, as is Cameo PErfume supposed to be. Limelight goes in my new Green FLower Bed along with Lime Sublime and green echinaceas, primroses, St PAtrick Daffodils, etc, Tawny Tiger goes in by Hot Cocoa in the COffee Garden, and I guess Cameo Perfume goes in the pink garden unless I find a better spot!...See MoreOT: Heirloom Roses Sale
Comments (2)If I could find a rose variety that I didn't have to dump a ton of fungicide on I'd grow them. Even the disease resistant ones ultimately succumb to powdery mildew and black spot here....See MoreBig Heirloom Austin Roses Sale
Comments (3)Darn. I would have tried Chaucer, but they're out of that one. Edit: I caved. I bought Wife of Bath. Rationalizations: I have no Austins, and everybody should have at least one. Everyone should have at least one old Austin and Wife of Bath is one of the oldest. (Hmm. It's one year younger than I am, so not sure how I feel about that.) I haven't tried an Austin with the myrrh fragrance yet. It's on sale....See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida)
