Exterior Siding for a Reddish Orange Colonial House

I have a colonial house that has more of an orange reddish tone to the brick than red. Anyone have any recommendations on what color I should use on the trim and siding? Its currently a cream color. I will hopefully be replacing the roof and the shutters within the year so trying to go in a different direction. Suggestions on roof and shutter colors would be great as well. Thanks in advance!

Could use a close-up of the brick. For sure, you need a shutter color that stands out from the brick more. Or to skip shutters. Trim can stay light or go quite a bit darker, like a bronze color -- probably lighter is best because of the columns.

Thanks! I can add a close up of the brick tomorrow as its currently dark outside. The gutters are being replaced and are white so I'm wondering if I should just do white trim and siding since the trim around my windows are white.

Hi there, We haven't done it yet, but I still want to. I actually found a neighborhood near here (tipped off by my neighbor who's been thinking of doing this for ten years but has yet to pull the trigger) where there are tons and tons of houses like ours, most painted a single color. They look great. And it's in a very fancy area, which I think explains the greater prevalence of doing this than my specific neighborhood, which is nice but not ritzy (since painting the brick adds a lot of $$). I took pictures of some of these houses, which I'm happy to post. I think it's important though to hire a really really good painter, and to shell out the extra $ for good paint. I've seen some crappy jobs and it's not worth it.

awm we were posting at the same time. I actually really like both versions of your home as I do of bittersweet's. You can count me in with the home owners with "fake" style homes. Ours is a Queen Anne Victorian wanna be and everyone that has seen it, even strangers that find out I live in "that house" tell me they love it. We even had one couple come snooping in our windows when we were obviously here working on our home during finishing (ha! like it'll ever be finished) construction. Two vehicles in the driveway and their walking around with their noses to the windows. LOL. When I saw them I told Darrell and we both went outside to meet them. They were a very nice couple and we invited them in to get a better look. Ha! They said they'd been watching it from ground up and was thrilled to get a look inside. Here it is last fall. We've yet to finish the sleeping porch railings. Took down the temp to be able to move in awhile ago and are now thinking of closing it in as a three season porch since we love the screen porch we closed in a couple years ago. And here's my idea of gingerbread and shutters that hubby really wants. I'd like other trim too, but it all adds up when you are doing it all with cash....

Color choice is very personal, so you might not like my choices. I prefer some contrast, so that trim and the door stand out from the siding, but I've kept to a conservative mix. The colors are primarily tones of yellow, green and red. Below are four exterior color combinations from Sherwin-Williams using their color visualizer. I placed the particular color names for each variation on the garage doors; from top to bottom they are for siding, trim, and accent. Personally, I would replace your shutters (too small for the windows) with trim. In that case the accent color would be only for your door. I would paint the brick the same color as the siding, because I think the focus should be on the columns and the front door.

Delay the gutter replacement until you have chosen a trim color. White is about last on my color choice with red brick.

Cream trim, black shutters are traditional. You could do a dark green or blue. And slate grey works well for any roof.

Alicia - I'm looking at two colors at the moment, alabaster or westhighland white (shermin williams). They are both a soft cream.

On my screen I prefer west highland, but colors look so different depending on the light. that looks to be the right direction.

Your inspiration could be the brick homes of Williamsburg, Va. Note the shutter dogs on the shutters of the last home posted by Alicia, above. The slate looking roof. I would price out copper gutters and down spouts (if they are in your budget, too!). Beautiful home!!!

I like Alicia's first picture also; very traditional and feels "right." And allows you to stay with a light gray roof. The lighter the roof color, the better for your summer energy bills.

Blue is a different direction. The colors here are unexpected and refreshing after so much gray and black on brick nowadays. This would work on your orangier brick, too. And notice the white gutters/downspouts with the white trim.
