Design Dilemma Furniture living room

something between mid century modern and "couchy-couch"?

Husband and I are looking at couches but having a difference in style. He likes all these midcentury modern couches with spindley little legs, and I like more boring, standard couches (I don't know the official name for these...) to me, the couches he likes look like office waiting room furniture, but the ones I like are...well...plain. I'm ok with plain. Comfy and plain with some fun throw pillows.

Is there some kind of style that seems in between these two?

Search contemporary, there are all kinds of designs that are inbetween.

Our cabinets, though old, were in pretty good shape and now look lovely with our new paint job. I think with older homes it is wise, as you are doing, to consider the period of the home and work with it rather than do what is currently popular. And I think each home has different needs so I'm sure you'll love your new cabinets! I have to admit I was a little sad to see our 1950's GE Stratoliner range be sold but that electric cooktop was so hard to do anything but boil water on and not much could be on simultaneously, and I fell in love with the Lacanche. Anyway, I also agree per above posters that style wise it doesn't have to all be one era. Our vintage artwork is from the 30s, our red formica table and chairs (not in the pic) are from the 50s and our cabinet pulls are newer but probably 50s inspired. I love the pulls you picked and I like the 30s-50s updated kitchen in the last several posts, which seems like it would work with your bathroom staying as is. One thing we considered is that if we tore out the kitchen and put in a true MCM kitchen it would look wierd with our 1950s extensively pink tiled bathroom and then that would need to be updated. By keeping the style of our kitchen to its era, the kitchen and bathroom seem more in sync and I don't seeing us (other than putting in new grout and maybe painting the walls) changing our pink tiled bathroom, which also made our approach more cost effective. I think doing a blend of 30s-40s to early 50s, your bathroom would fit nicely into the updated kitchen.

Thanks bmorepanic. Exactly right, there is a spectrum of styles that would work which creates too many options. In the end, it's hard not to let price be the deciding factor. Why pay $25+ a sq/ft if it's no more inspiring than $7 a sq/ft really? The issue of where to start and stop the tile is another thing we can't resolve, especially because of that angled corner. Oh well, any strong opinions are welcomed because we're about ready to toss up our arms in defeat.

Mid century modern porch light

Looking for suggestions on what to use on either side of the house for lighting. Not sure if the lights that are there are original to the house or not. They're a square brass light with a scallop. The glass is broke and we're told there's no easy way to replace. We want something cool and mid century/modern. We picked the John Timberland lights for our porch so wanting something that will coordinate. Ceiling mount. Any suggestions?

It’s not a hard style to find, but prices vary and so would quality. These are in Cdn$, so U.S would be cheaper, but I recommend sitting/testing couches, ask about construction and fabric and warranties. Nothing to do with style, but I wish when I had been shopping for living room furniture, that I had known Roomba cleaners would be in my life. They try to clean under my current furniture and get stuck. I think the new trend in flooring towards wood everything requires an inordinate cleaning effort to stay nice, unless you have hired help or a Roomba in your life. So I like accommodating the Roomba. My point is that you could either make sure you go all the way to the floor protecting it from dust getting under or make sure the legs allow your little Roomba underneath with plenty of access in case it decides to stop there. I'm just throwing this out there in case nobody else does. I wish someone had done so for me

Oh man, your timing could not have been better on this. I JUST bought us a Roomba for Christmas. This is so helpful.

I'm so happy to have helped! I also made the mistake of layering a nice area rug over wall to wall plush, resulting in an uneven surface my little Roomba finds particularly challenging. Regardless of style differences, you and your husband have superb taste in furniture :-) I'm sure whatever you choose will be great in the long run. You can also mix styles: your style for sofa and his for chairs. Just a thought.

What other furniture is in this room and adjacent rooms? What are the lines and styles of those pieces?

I have found that tight back sofas - where the back cushions are not removable, have kept their shape and lasted much longer than sofas where the back cushions are removable.

Remember you can add throw pillows and blankets to all kinds of sofas.

IMO a lot depends on your style of the space and for sure you need to sit on them before buying. The look is important but comfort comes first.
