Paint the banister

I just got brown vinyl floors put in (pic attached). Should i paint the banister, newel and baserail? black or dark brown? Also should the baserail be painted white?

Ok, so I had to come back to reality and remind myself that I am working on a budget, a very small budget. So as I toyed with the idea of ripping out the carpet, replacing the banister, and installing that awesome blue antelope carpet, which I totally LOVE by the way, the dollar signs started added up in my head, I quickly came back to earth, and back to the idea of painting the banister (sigh). We are in the process painting the kitchen cabinets and installing granite so the stairs will have to be another project for another day (sigh again). Anyway!!! My painter is using General Finishes Java on the banister and the spindles will be white. What a huge difference already! Here is a sneak peak of the banister and a few pictures of my "in progress" cabinet just because I love them already.

So, lets look at some options. You have a rather traditional looking staircase and surrounding decor. If you paint the railings black, it's going to disappear into the wrought iron. Notice all the white surrounding it. even the risers. Nothing else is black. would you be willing to paint the trim work upstairs black? or how about the doors? What if you took off the carpet and did the risers in black, stained the treads and updated to a more contemporary railing? more all black, but white risers and darker treads. Notice the newer light fixture in the foyer you could always darken your stain color and get a more modern, square style spindles in white this one looks good. the black/white contrast w/the herringbone stair runner, squared off newel posts. who says you have to do black?! Live a little.

I‘m not a fan either visually or from a practical perspective. If you wanted a change, maybe look at inspiration pictures of only the newel post in white. Better yet, a new one could be lovely If not too difficult to do.

What color to paint/stain banister rails?

I'm seeking advice on what color to stain/paint my banister rails. The carpet in the photo is staying for now (may refinish stairs), but the downstairs flooring is being replaced with Coretec Spirit Oak (see photo). The walls will be painted SW Zurich White (see photo), and the trim, doors, cabinets, etc. will be painted SW Pure White. I will likely paint the spindles SW Pure White, but I'm wondering if I should stain the rails light to match the floors or dark for contrast? I thought about staining them to match the exposed beams (see photo) in two rooms of the home, but those rooms aren't within view of the stairs, so I'm not sure it matter. I welcome any and all advice.

Why not start with painting only the baserail white. It might surprise you what that little change can do. I actually like the color of your rail and newel.

I think the above photo is more fitting in your home, with your furniture, than going all white. What do you think?

@judianna20 i didnt think about that. Thats actually a good idea! Maybe ill start with that and see how that looks.

The wood color is a very good blend with the floor color and the other browns in the room - or so it looks on my monitor. The hand rail, being a hand rail gets handled a lot and wood finish is more durable/ easier to keep clean and you dont have paint getting worn off. Besides, an interior benefits from having a variety of textures and visual elements - another reason to keep these things wood vs. adding more painted surfaces.

I would leave it exactly as it is right now. It works very well, and the rail and newel go well with the flooring. It looks nice in your room, the way it is.

I think your flooring and your living room look great, too. I wouldn’t make any changes. Get used to your new floor. And enjoy the holidays ahead without any immediate projects! Lovely room!

I think changing to a runner would do wonders (budget allowing) vs painting anything. Pick a color and style that will complement the upper landing for a more seamless connection.
