Yes the table looks too minimal, however, I’m not sure you’ve left enough room there for table and chairs and space for walking. Why is the island so deep? Did you plan to use barstools? Reconsider the space at the window for dining

You could do a banquette against the wall opposite the island, and could probably find something with a height and length that would be in line with the island. I’d go for something skirted, that went to the floor like Ballard Design’s Coventry line. Would also give you a little more pass through room since it would be closer to the wall.

You have to upload a DRAWING that shows the ENTIRE LIVING space. Front to back. One that includes all the walls, windows, entry passages, the island and kitchen perimeter, and you must add the feet and inches to all of it.

Nobody here is a mind reader for what size or shape will work best in your space, as we have no clue as to the actual size the whole space is, Anywhere. Nor if there is seating planned at the island on the side we can not see. Nor what any potential "seating area" would contain at the window area.

All of design is feet, inches, what fits, and what fits WELL.

We need to see a drawing like Jan mentioned and some mor epics of the space . I agree the island is huge and totally out of proprtion who designed this?

I am assuming that you will have counter height stools beneath the island for seating, no? You probably don’t have a lot of room for a table and four chairs in that area. I would look into something like a Saarinen round pedestal table. 42”. Placing the chairs so that the backs of the two closest to the island are at an angle to it. It might still be too tight. In that case, I would push the round table into the corner of what appears to be a family room with a large window behind it. Leave the space between the front window and the island a walkway. OR, as has been suggested, build a banquette against the wall and push the table tighter to the banquette. The two chairs with their backs to the island might impede anyone walking past, however.

While 4' x 10 feet is not exactly that? It may well be for the space you INTENDED to put a table. Look below at your own picture:

Look left of that to wall. If you tell me there is more than five feet? I might sign up to eat all of those 60 odd inches.

What does this tell me? You didn't plan the arrangement of anything on whole, before and in conjunction with the island you desired.

What now? You must re think your "plan".

A table needs NOT less than 30" all around for chairs to back up - 36 is far better. There's no table that will work in that space, unless you enjoy it shoved against a wall to pull away as you need, and a moveable bench, no built in, at the wall side. Why? You have to have passage past it. Will there be stools at the island? I hope not.

So..........you now have to do the planning you didn't do, post a drawing, and include all dimensions as I described up above, and help will be forthcoming.

Ptreckel that’s very helpful advice. I do plan on having stools by the island. I will look into the saaeinen or banquette like AiFL suggested.

Perhaps a nice seating area can be done with table that buts up along the island. Seating at each end and two along side. Then will have walkway along the wall.

No point in looking into anything yet....BUT getting that drawing on paper.

I think you should move table to by the other window, add stools to island and then a small seating area where table currently is. Appears to be lots of room at end of island by the window with the curtain drawn. Move it there and take a pic so we can see.

And comments about how big the island is or how it wasn’t planned well are useless at this point and mean and unneeded. This is the space and the dilemma is how to use it well not how to criticize it. I love your island

Lots of space for it. I say that’s the spot for it to stay for now and in time get a larger table that will fill the space more.

There's no huge hurry for a drawing, you don't need the table today, right?

But. Nobody is being "mean" by suggesting that the spot you planned may not work well, let alone look great.

Thus, pro's especially, ask for the inches: ) Because we do virtually nothing for a paying client without them. This is... free, albeit truthful, advice.

Jan it is mean to comment on the size of the island and imply no planning was done and the island is already in and not changing. Of course it’s not mean to suggest moving table or that table doesn’t work in that spot. It’s something easily changed. Verbo’s comments don’t add anything helpful for the OP on how to set up their space for the most part. While parts of the comments suggest moving table which is a possibility it’s ludicrous to suggest altering island they just put in. Not needed. Of course on this forum you get great tips and unkind muddled in. That’s how it always goes around here.

@Jessica Nayef I like @WestCoast Hopeful suggestions for your space. Without having actual room measurements yet, 😊 it looks like space by large draped window is perfect for a nice sized dining table, chairs & area rug to define that space. For island, get the 2-3 nice stools for seating & think about a long sideboard to place under the window - great for additional storage & decor on top. What’s the plan for window treatment on the smaller window? It also looks like a possibility to pull the great room sofa towards the kitchen just a bit to add more space to that room if needed. Looks like a really wide walkway there & kitchen border defined by the short piece of wall by step stool in first pic. Can’t tell how much or what kind of space is to right of draped window in that first pic & your not yet installed wall oven blocking the view there - so, not quite sure how my vision plays out IRL.

Thinking about Roman shades for the small window. A side board is an idea I was playing with in my head.

I think scale can be really hard, especially in a newer space - I have had good luck using large cardboard boxes and chairs from other rooms to mock up how large a table/chairs should be. This would also help you play with a round vs rectangular table - and see what you like more. Ordering online (which a lot of us have to do these days) makes mocking up the layout even more important bc it's hard to get a sense for how online measurements come to life -

some of my friends mock up furniture using blue painters tape but I need to something 3D to help me see if it works -- I am likely not that smart spatially 😅

Same. The table is from small apartments and I was not planning on keeping it. Like you are saying, I want to be very mindful of my future furniture choices so that it does make sense spatially and proportionally. If it doesn’t work, I’ll readjust as needed. I think the tape idea is great and will be doing that moving forward

Taping out things or using cardboard is super helpful. We did that when it ordering rugs and furniture and it was a good decision hands down

I’d tape out a table, chairs and a banquette, just to be sure a decent walk through is feasible. It will be nice to save the area by window for a seating area.

If it were me, to have similar prorportions to island and as important, to accommodate more than four when guests come over, consider a longer table.

I love the photos of the seating area by the window which is what I had in mind. I’m definitely going to rule out the banquette before moving the dining area, however I know I might have to let that seating area go.

I would get a live edge narrow counter height table and have it against or close to the wall with the window. Something like below but rounded ends that allow one person to be seated at each end and two or three in the middle. No seating on the wall side. 24" wide. buy a few stacking stools so if you have extra guests and need to seat more you can pull it out and seat on both sides. 24" wide will allow plates on all sides. Just have to fill plates buffet style, but you have the island for that.

I like the suggestion of a round table, or a square one, over in that corner. Now, what to do with the space on the wall opposite the island? How about a beautiful free-standing buffet/hutch or some kind of display case for your dishes or books or pretty objects? That will leave that passageway wide open, with room for stools, and important storage as well. I would have this type of thing in mind, and I find things like this on Craigslist/Offerup all the time(That's my little money-saving/budget tip):

I understand about focusing on OP questions. There are sometimes a few general principles that may help explain why one layout might work better vs not.
One thin I noticed about island and tables is that the change in height from counter height to table height often works better when ther is enough distance between them so your eye adjust s rathe than seems like suddenly dropping down. Exception is a more attached 2- level, counter with integral table.
That is sometimes why a high table/ bar table might look good if close by, but if have a longer “ keeping room “ spac then just a right sized dining table works.
