Comments (1)Since I seldom dissect each bloom ;) the only thing I can think of is it's the dead stamen and carpels. Probably didn't get pollinated. Or some sort of insect. Comments (20)Hi all, Those Elvas flowers are breathtaking. Cindee, yours looks different from the rest, maybe more ruffled (or is that just me?). I also purchased a couple Elvas from Parks this year, but all of my Amis are very slow to do anything. Perhaps it's been too cool in the greenhouse, not sure, but I'm mostly letting them do their own thing (they'll probably bloom by July!). Everything appears to have roots because when I give them a slight "tug" they are all fast. Comments (5)carnations are wonderful like that- the spicy smell lasts far longer than any floral! I have yet to run into anything that will keep flowers from fading- but one of the few places I'm not adverse to modern chemicals is here- I spray my hydrangea heads with satin polyurethane...a misty coating, let dry, spin the spray booth around, and mist the other side, and repeat- it keeps them from falling to powder, and the smell disperses fairly quickly. the other solution I have seen used is Ailene's Fabric Stiffener thinned to half consistency with water....See Morewestes Zone 9b California SF Bay
