doggie dessert plant (possibly a CA native)
Comments (2)Maybe you could cover it with a dome of chicken wire till it recovers and grows a bit more recognizable? Though if the dogs find it so tasty, that might not deter them. My only wild guess is so wild even I know not to mention it. 8-)...See MoreDessert Rose question
Comments (30)Hey Julia, What do I know? But it looks like its' got a caudex to me! I work on developing mine by lifting and twisting and training them into interesting shapes. I also have a few that where grafted...basically someone grew out a non-spectacular DR and cut the top off, made a wedge from a cutting like the one your mom gave you and taped it together. I'm planning on trying it myself when my grafted ones get a little bigger...I'm going to take cuttings from other DR and make myself a desert rose cocktail tree lol! Someone on GW has a great old post on DR's - how to grow / train/etc...search for it (I think it was Pugluvr?) I think yours is beautiful, maybe try moving it to a slightly smaller pot and lifting it up about an inch or so out of the soil and see if you can continue to gently train it as it continues to develop....See MoreWhat's for Dessert #2 - 2009
Comments (32)More desserts here, the Monkey Princess and Bruvver came over yesterday and we just had to make some elephant ears. The Princess didn't get quite enough of them at this year's fairs and festivals, LOL. So, she and Bruvver started stirring some up... We fried them in hot oil and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar: The Princess approved: We also had a birthday party today, for my sister's Terrible Twins. They turned seven so I decided to make some cake pops, I'd seen them all over the internet. They both like "Hello Kitty" so off I go. I bake a cake. From scratch, the Hershey's Cocoa recipe. I crumble it up and mix up a cream cheese based buttercream frosting, mix it all together. Make balls, add sticks and freeze. But what for ears? White/vanilla chips, stuck to the tops of the cake balls, as per "Bakerella", then a dip into melted candy coating. Some piped on decorations and we have it: What a PIA. Plus, the coating drips down and it's not smooth, and my piece of styrofoam I had holding the pops fell over and smashed several. I gave up on "hello Kitty" and just dipped the rest, sprinkled them and added some flowers: Oh yeah, and just to add to the equation, I have to tell you that I tasted one of them today. It was possibly one of the worst things I have ever put into my mouth, so sweet it would make your teeth ache and soft and mushy, kind of like the center of brownies when they aren't quite cooked enough. Ewwww..... Annie...See MoreI need help my Gem of the dessert cacti may be dying!
Comments (65)My name isn’t Justin and I don’t work for Costa Farms, but I will try to help you Camille:). Your cactus is Mammillaria vetula subs. gracilis cv. Arizona Snowcap, but if you‘re ever looking for more info you can easily type in Mammillaria ‘Arizona Snowcap’ instead of the long name I gave you in green, which is a link that will give you info on your cactus. Idk if you know this, but the new spines won’t be blue or yellow, they will be white. This cactus is a slowww grower. I personally think the first thing with any plant growing is knowing what plant you have and a little bit about the plant. If these were mine I would unpot, gently remove as much of the old soil off the roots as you can , and repot in a better faster draining mix like a perlite and or pumice mixed with cheap cactus soil. The pots look like the right size, if they’re root bound you can go up one pot size. After repotting cactus I wait about a week or two and then water them. It’s the start of the growin season so now is a great time to do this. If you live on the Northern Hemisphere of course. During the winter this cactus should be kept totally dry. I know that may sound nuts, but it’s normal when growing cactus. Many of my cactus got their first drink of water since late October a few days ago. Like my Mammillaria duwei Before After Any pieces that have fallen off set on top of the mix and they’ll root eventually. It could take months for this process so be patient and leave them be. Any rootless pieces should be kept in bright filtered sun, especially when it starts to get hot because the rootless little pieces will fry. Lastly, during the growing season your cactus may need to more sun than what’s being provided, so slowly acclimating it to more sun is probably in its future....See Morearcy_gw
