My ceilings are just under 8' and I have a tall husband worried about bumping his head on pendants lol. Our island is 9' long but only 40" wide. We went with clear pendants so visually they weren't intrusive. Played around with how far off the island and found a height that worked for us (my husband). It looks like the island is illuminated solely by the pendants. Ital mover's black and amber choices seem to compliment the table fixture but it's had to know how well they will light the space. Agree, they need to be narrow for the 8' island, but I would carefully consider the length so they don't overly enclose the space. A clear or frosted shade would likely give more light. My personal taste is to avoid pendants due to cleaning as well as the spacial interruption. OK for really high ceilings but it's a personal design choice.

There are some good rules of thumb for this that you can google - I also suggest blowing up balloons to approx the size pendant you are interested in and hanging them from ribbon at the correct length, then live with that for a few days to see if the scale is right, whether it blocks anything in your line of sight, etc..
