Is glass mosaic tile a pain to keep clean in a shower?
Comments (8)Jenna, Mold spores are everywhere. When they find a moist location, they can bloom. So the key is ventilation to remove humid air and a properly sloped pan on the floor to prevent the floor from retaining moisture. Soap, shampoo, and conditioners can also have an effect, in terms of residue left on the walls or floor. After a consumers report article years ago we switched to Zest soap, and sure enough, it rinses much cleaner than the soaps we had previously used. Mt wife has a collection of lotions and potions (shampoos and conditioners), some rinse less well than others. If you have hard water, the minerals could leave residue on the tile. One thing to consider is having a hand held shower that you can take off the wall and use that to rinse down the walls after you shower. It only takes a few seconds. If you need additional help, some use a squeegee and give the walls and floor a quick once-over, that can prevent mineral deposits being left on the wall from hard water. In general, taking in all the negatives, if you have a tough situation, your hubby is right in that less grout can mean less maintenance issues. But in a well-designed, well ventilated, and well-built shower, you should have no problems to begin with. Mongo...See MoreGlass mosaic tile in shower
Comments (5)So far, our glass mosaic tile (on the shower walls) has been great. I haven't had any issues with cleaning it.. just a spray and wipe down with regular tile cleaner every couple of weeks. I do a rinse with the hand shower on the walls most likely to get shampoo drips, but I doubt my husband does that. I also do a really quick, not-too-thorough squeegee after showering (I do a more thorough job on the glass doors and marble floor). Ours is the standard mosaic that comes on paper-faced sheets. The surface has a slight texture. The only other advice I have is to maybe do a test board of your chosen tile and thinset and grout before buying the whole lot. Our tile (white glass) looked very white when set on a white background, but became much more blue-grey when installed. the thinkset was labeled "white" but in reality it was fairly grey. I do think you can buy pure white thinsets, which might have solved the color issue. Anyway, since even opaque glass is translucent, doing a test board would avoid any surprises. (I had to change the entire color/design scheme of the room!) All in all, I am very happy with the decision to use the glass mosaic tile. Also happy it was a pro -Bill- not me, doing the installation. Our shower wall tile runs all the way around the room and soaking tub area, so there was a lot of layout to figure out.. it looked very complicated and he did a fantastic job....See Moretiles for mosaic shower floor
Comments (9)You might be interested in joining this facebook group (if you're on fb). This is a group we started for those of us in the trade that do artistic tile work. It is comprised of professionals in the industry, including those who primarily make mosaic tile art and those who design, fabricate and install artistic tile work. Several amazing octopus projects have been featured. More importantly, there is a great deal of technical experience in the group. We just posted a couple short videos on "mounting" the tile pieces prior to install (allows for differences in tile thicknesses) and are actually working on a proposal for new standards in the industry regarding mosaic and cut tile installations. Please just indicate in the questions when you request to join that you were invited by Dragonfly and we'll let you in. Cool project. I assume you understand the proper methods for building the shower prior to installing the tile. Very important. https://www.facebook.com/groups/tiletradeartisansguild/...See MoreScratched glass mosaic tiles on shower wall - please help!
Comments (23)It sounds like you’ve received some good advice re: polishing your tiles. I’m just posting a comment to let you know how beautiful your glass tile looks! I actually have this tile saved as one of my options for the wall over my vanity behind my mirrors. Q - is there any natural light in your bathroom? If so, would you mind taking a photo during the day so I can see how the tile looks with natural light? I would really appreciate it. Also - and I apologize if this seems like a strange question - did you pick out the tile or did a female? I’m asking this question in order to prove a point with my significant other. I own my house (no mortgage) - so, when we decided to live together, I didn’t want to sell it and buy something else with a mortgage. However, I originally built this house with my ex-husband - so, I’m remodeling MANY rooms in order to make it “new” (even though my ex didn’t really give much input into the house when we built it - and I only shared this house with my ex for about 4 years - quite awhile ago). I am trying to be considerate by not making anything “too feminine” - this tile seems like a good choice for that. My significant other didn’t say that the tile is too feminine - but I‘m not exactly sure whether he believes that or not! I definitely don’t think it’s feminine - I think it’s an attractive option for my accent wall. His suggestions have been simply TOO BORING! I don’t want a sterile looking all gray/white/black bathroom. I do want to be considerate - but it still is my house so . . . LOL! One other Q - what did you choose for your vanity/wall paint/flooring? Thanks!...See MoreTheresa H
