Newbie desperately seeking help for front yard
Comments (13)Even though we haven't heard a definitive statement about the design direction you want to go, here's a stab at a layout for some basic landscaping... applying my "formula" as I have fun practicing. I'm ignoring some opportunities in favor of others. I'll let other forum members address things they think are of greater concern. It's a scheme. Nothing is immune from being tweaked or manipulated by real life concerns. Also, I don't show every plant detail that there could be; there are places where adding further details would be an enhancement to the scheme. And if I were doing this on a plan, I'm sure I would add more. There are discrepancies from one picture to the other because it's hard to draw with great precision at very small scale. Even though some plants jump out at me as likely contenders, the picture is not indicating what any specific plant is... just general form. For example, the plant under the tree with the blue flowers might be end up being Hosta. So don't take the drawing literally for every detail. It's meant to suggest a general direction and plan of attack. Also, because your original picture doesn't show what's at far left and right, I just guess and make it up and it's subject to being wrong. But it still suggests a general approach that might work with a little adapting. I'm all for a couple of street trees, but here again, I wouldn't take the placement literally. I'm mostly trying to keep them out of the way of other things in the drawing. I'm trying not to barricade or obscure the entrance. While I normally try not to place plants in front of windows, I think the distance between the windows on the porch and the multi-trunk tree in front is great enough to allow it. I think the area needs the small tree to give a sense of shelter (almost as if it was a domed awning) and to address the large blank space on the garage wall. The "ceiling" would need to be kept high to permit as much light as possible and then only plants tolerating or liking shade could grow as soon as conditions were stabile....See MoreDesperately seeking a Daybed that opens to a queen
Comments (6)Hi Madeline, I did not realize you posted back. We bought the Hemnes daybed for a preschooler and wanted something that would grow with him, or have further use for guests one day. Closed up it looks like a twin daybed with drawers under it. the whole bottom section with the drawers pulls out to double it in size to a king bed. the construction has alternating slats. I suppose if you only pulled it out part of the way you can use it with a queen mattress. I prefer latex foam to spring mattresses and because it is for a small child, we bought the least expensive thin one, and it is comfortable for him and us when we read to him in bed. the construction of it would not tolerate jumping on the bed. In the store, they show the bed set up with two thin mattresses (like the one we bought) one on top of the other, and the sales person said to put them side by side when opening up to a king. we only bought one thin mattress for now. if you want to see how it is put together, look at the directions for more info, the website that has them is below, for some reason these are scanned in back to front. I also suggest going to the store and seeing how it works for yourself to appreciate how it is made and decide if it is for you as IKEA is not high end furniture, but it has served us well in many rooms. the sales associates will allow you to remove the bedding and see how it works, it is a very hands on kind of store. http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/ikea-instructions/6654-hemnes-day-bed-instructions.html?ltr=H Here is a link that might be useful: assembly instructions...See MoreDesperately need help with living room furniture arrangement
Comments (79)Thanks groveraxle for the room layouts. If you look at 1 and 2, you will see a nice walkway from front to kitchen without having to walk through the conversation area. I like that. What I don't like is the inability to watch tv sitting perpendicular to the tv and fireplace. This is a tricky room since the wall is offset from the fireplace/tv. Have you thought of having 4 swivel chairs around a round center coffee table centered on the fire place? It is a cozy sitting arrangement and chairs can be pivoted toward the tv when watching tv. This really won't work for the two closes to the fireplace/tv because of the awkward up angle but it will work for the other two. The other option .. have you thought of two low backed curved couches? One on each side of the fireplace? It would create a cozy seating area and still put seating facing the TV. I couldn't find a curved couch quickly but here is the idea but using a sectional. Obviously this wouldn't work because the size is too big and the lounge pieces but the idea is there if you can see it. The walkway remains free. You get a cozy seating area for both TV and fireplace and you don't have to find complementary pieces if you feel better having matching pieces....See MoreDesperately seeking furniture arrangement advice...
