help me choose my kitchen layout
Comments (8)lavendar lass--do you mean move the sink over to the area where the fridge is now? Hmmmm, I hadn't really thought about that. However,DH doesn't want the fridge next to the dining area (even though I put it there in #3). He hears every little sound and hates to hear it run. I don't know how it could be much louder there than on the other wall but......(sigh) :^) What about moving the fridge to where the ovens are and moving them to the other side of the range? Don't know if this would be an annoyance when you are opening the doors and someone is trying to come in the kitchen from the hallway. I would probably widen the walkway if I did that. As for having glass fronts, my dishes aren't that matched and I have too many plastic drinking cups for that to look good. I wouldn't mind having the very high parts be glass to put my good china in. Elphaba (awesome name by the way!), the longest leg of the triangle in #2 would be 7 1/2 or 8 ft. I have wondered about if that would be too much walking--it might be great for parties though. The walking area in plan #1 is also big, it just has the small prep area doesn't look that way. Great food for thought!...See MoreHelp me choose the best kitchen layout - lots of ideas
Comments (12)With the layout options you have...I'd pick the one with the most space, between the fridge and range. It would also be nice to have more space between the sink and range...but where would you put things from the fridge? The L-shape doesn't offer much in the way of prep space, unless you use the peninsula. Personally, I would want to maximize my countertop areas...having one area for a 'landing space' by the fridge, a larger prep space by the range, a place for dishes by the dishwasher (if you can't load them right away) and an area for seating. Everyone uses the kitchen differently, but even though it's a smaller space, I think it could be much more efficient than the options you've shown. Of course, you can choose to stay with the same layout you have now (without the wall oven) and if it's what you're used to, it may work for you. But, I'd rather come up with a more improved space, if I were spending money to remodel. Just my two cents......See MorePlease help me choose between two layouts
Comments (11)I like all the suggestions offered above better than either plan. You mention being able to visit as you prep on the peninsula, but I noticed that the seats will be in the traffic path from the porch. How often will you use the wood cooker? If not as often as the cooktop, I'd prefer llucy's idea of putting the fridge where the wall ovens are drawn in the first plan. That puts the fridge closer to the dining area, prep and cooking areas. I'd also use only one island if the fridge is moved, and I think I'd put the ovens where the wood stove is drawn, and build in a nook and wood storage for the range (which has soooo much charm, btw.) Re: Stages sink against the wall--there was a thread in the last year about that situation, and IIRC the owner was very disappointed and didn't like the cabinets above or beside it. I think this is the thread--you might want to read through it. Here's a quick rearrangement, just to illustrate a couple of the ideas suggested above. I know you don't want to change things up much, but something to consider. The clean-up sink would be the water source for prep for the wood stove. Can wood for the stove be stored near the garden entrance? I didn't read the previous planning thread, but if there's no reason the prep sink can't be on the island, you could have more space around the cooktop. There's a seat at each of the island, for someone who is hanging out while you work, and plenty of room for helpers to cook together. Whatever you ultimately decide, it looks as if you're going to have an amazing kitchen. I hope you'll come back and post a reveal thread, because I am looking forward to seeing the AGA in action!...See MorePlease help me choose and improve my layout
Comments (4)I don't think 12" is adeqaute to the left side of the sink. Here are the kitchen planning "rules" for reference. See, rule 11. From experience, we found that a 21" sink-side landing space wasn't quite adequate for handwashed items, soap dispenser, paper towels and-or coffee maker, etc. So that sink related stuff landed in the prep zone instead, which then cramped that prep space. I would do plan #2, modified. End-panel to support the countertop on the aisle-side of the dw --1", 24" dw, 27" sink-base (if available), 33" prep space, 30" range, 15" cab or drawer base and 2" filler. Plates across from the dw in drawers in the island. Where are you planning on putting the trash?...See MoreDiane@426
