Lighting Design Dilemma living room

How to light a room with 18' ceiling?

My living room has a 2-story high ceiling that goes up to a balcony on the second floor. There are downlights sconces on 3 sides of the room but the center and remaining side are quite dim. I do not have a light in the middle of the ceiling. I would like to find a way to get further into the middle of the room from the scones on the walls. Something like a trapeze going from one side to the other would do the trick I think. Is there such a thing? Thanks

In a way there is it is called cable lighting and I use it a lot for homes with very high ceilings What is really cool about it is you can run it so that you can even do drop heads above end tble sin the middle of the space . I use TECH it has the best choice of heads , You need to go tho a good lighting store and check out all the choices you havs and also an installer who has worked with this type of lighting.

This is appropriate if the home is modern. If not, a lot of people put a chandelier in the middle of the room. I have a living room like this and I find a ceiling fan to be indispensible in the summer to push down the warm air from the second floor. Otherwise the second floor is much warmer than the first floor. If you haven't lived in this house during the summer you should see what it's like before committing yourself. But for anything other than ambiant lighting you are going to need lamps to bring light down to the human level.

David...YES! That is exactly what I'd love to do. Except in that picture, there were all sorts of cross beams to tuck lights into, and all I have is wall space to mount lights on, which I'm not inclined to do because my living room is really gothic with a steep pitch decorative beam ceiling. Where the wall meets the ceiling is relatively low, and the thought of throwing spot fixtures up there when I've got torches for sconce lighting on the walls just seems like a strange mix. I'd like to keep it gothic. We're back to the idea of embedding an led strip in the ridge beam. If you don't want it, you don't have to use it, but at least we have some sort of option for lighting up the ceiling without putting up a bunch of modern fixtures. That said, the store mentioned in the picture you posted from Houszz is in Torrance, and I think I'll give them a call. Torrance is relatively close to me. If you come up with any other brilliant ideas please do share!

How wide are the beams? Were you considering cutting holes in the beams to install recessed lights like in the photo? How would you wire the lights so the wiring wouldn't be visible? Have you examined the space above planks to determine whether you could install recessed lights between the beams instead of on the beams? What kind of flooring are you planning to install?

If you want it as evenly lit as a modern office, you can add LED flat panel lights with conduit on a dimmer switch. If you'd prefer slightly less even lighting, one to three round flat LED lights and a full perimeter of LED strip lights may work well. You can try that idea out with a few battery operated stick-on LED lights for under $20 each.
