I only have three orange daylilies.

Chicago Fire was a gift from a friend. An oldie for sure, I bet no one else here grows it.

Primal Scream is my favorite of these. It benefitted from a move, it was in too much shade.

Tyger River is in a less than ideal spot. I’m sure it could use more sun. Too much tree shade here.

Sherry - Your oranges have such deep, vibrant color. Mine were sort of washed out this season by the hundred-degree temps..

Debra, I think the fact most of daylilies have to deal with some shade during the day helps the color stay true. Sometimes they arent as prolific because of shade.

I'm a big fan of daylily orange. Even the so-called ditch lilies are pretty to me. If your top 3 colors Debra are Pink, Purple, and red, mine are Yellow, orange and pink.

Orange Smoothie has been a good performer for me over the years. Lots of blooms and reblooms. Color leans more towards a melon/yellow shade in the afternoon if it's very hot.

Orange Smoothie:

Another new orange whose color has me all excited. Bloomed in the high heat and held it's color very well. I'm looking forward to it again next year. Here it is next to Indian Ripple whose color has already changed due to the hot sun in the afternoon:

Muy Caliente:

Like the red Acquire the Fire, this deep orange is unbeatable in the sun. The color is stunning.

Burning Inheritance:

Finally, just because I love orange, a great Zinnia that is wonderful shade of orange.

Maryl, I really like No Way Jose…..I am a doubles fan but havent added many considering what little space I have. the newer ones I have arent established yet.

I always enjoy seeing your Orange Smoothie, mine is peachy/ coral here always…..doesnt fit my orange category. BTW, my new one did well last season.

Maryl, I am sorry that Extreme Tangerine didn't hold well in the sun, but glad to see that Muy Caliente did.

My picks for today are Abstract Orange, No Way Jose and Orange Clown.

As you all know, we like orange, especially Bob. We have lots of oranges to share.

Buddy's Betsy is always one of the first tetraploids to bloom here.

Canyon Lullaby is such a luscious color.

Deadliest Catch is a reliable late bloomer for us. it sets a lot of seeds and is giving us some nice seedlings.

Disco Inferno is one of the most vibrant orange reds in the garden. I bought it cheap to increase to resell, but Bob has decided it will stay.

Here is Extreme Tangerine in our garden.

Hot Buttered Rum is a late bloomer.

We lost all of our Krakatoa Katie during a bad winter. We had torrential rain in January, then it turned cold and icey and all of the lineouts died. A friend in Indianapolis who had it gave us several fans.

Mardi Gras Indian is one of the brightest flowers in the garden. As you might imagine, it's one of Bob's favorites.

Sea of Cinders has been one of our favorites for years. It is not reliably hardy for us though.

The Bride of Dracula is an excellent daylily. It sets seeds well and is giving up some nice seedlings.

I would describe Weasel Teeth as a brownish orange with a maroon eye.

Whoa Mule was new to the garden this year and we are really liking it. It is a reverse bicolor--that is, the sepals are a darker color than the petals. Reverse bicolors are fairly rare and we are trying to breed some. Whoa Mule is a diploid.

We are crossing our fingers that this seedling has a good plant habit. This is Pineapple Bites X Extreme Tangerine. It is a three year old seedling, but we haven't taken stats on it yet.

This seedling is Wolverine X (Sea of Cinders X Happy Holidays to You). The seedling pollen parent is red and Wolverine is pink, but we got several orange flowers out of the cross.

We like the open form of this flower. It is Carrots Forever X Susan Ruoff. We are hoping it will be an intro in a few years.

This seedling is Buddy's Betsy X Heavenly Bengal Tiger. It has the shape of Buddy's Betsy and the color of H. Bengal Tiger. We have a whole row of ones this color and nextt year we need to select which ones will stay.

This is the last seedling I will post. It is But Wait, There's More X Wandering Werribee. It's at least a mid-late bloomer.

Nan - You always have so many nice oranges. I think my favorites are Whoa Mule, Canyon Lullaby and Raggedy Man.

David - My favorite of yours is Chilled Orange Sorbet. I have that one but didn't photograph it last season.

Maryl - I'm impressed with how well Nan's Muy Caliente does in your heat. It is a striking color. Would you say it is similar in color to Burning Inheritance? I'm not usually a fan of doubles, but I do like No Way Jose.

Sherry: Your Chicago Fire is that orange red color I like so much. That color just pops everything else around it.........NAN: I've looked at Mardi Gras Indian for a few years now, but Selman's intros can be hit or miss in the sunfast department for me. Canyon Lullaby is another shade of orange I like if it holds its color in our heat. Nice full petal form too......David: Ditto on Chilled Orange Sorbet. Its got the form and color that appeals to me. I'm not sure it's colorfast though..............Debra: Muy Caliente was such a pleasant surprise when it's color held so well. It's not as deep an orange/red as Burning Inheritance whose pictures almost look photo shopped at times (and are not), but it was certainly a solid unflinching red/orange color AND, here's the kicker for me, it's a dormant...... No Way Jose is a pretty one from Hensley, but it's specs wouldn't be up your alley I don't think.............Maryl

kay- Bob Marley makes a bright, glowing clump. That's a good photo of SC Francis Busby. Mine did not bloom well this year. It was divided several times over the past two years. I think it must have been sulking because of that.

I hate that Francis Busby didn't bloom for you. It was a dynamic bloomer here, and I thaank you mentally every time it blooms...I do love orange ones, but unlike maryl, it doesn't include ditch lilies.

Kay: You got me to thinking. I say "ditch lilies" only because other people say that, but I really don't know that much about them other then their reputation for being invasive and orange. What I personally call a ditch lily is the one that a friend gave me eons ago before I knew about such things which had grown wild in her backyard. I put it in my border at the time and thought it was pretty. Our soil is really heavy clay, (which is why I grow in pots), but after 4 years when I went to move it, it hadn't spread much at all. Is "Kwanso" a ditch lily? or is that another daylily entirely? Inquiring minds want to know...........BTW: I really like your Heavenly Dragon Fire and have thought about adding it a number of times. How colorfast is it for you?........Maryl

It is colorfast insofar as the color that blooms throughout the day, however I have noted that it is a bit lighter in extremely hot days. It doesn't fade, it just begins just a bit lighter orange Maryk,

'Ditch Lily' commonly refers to the single orange Fulva Europa that is often seen growing in ditches along highways in Indiana and other states. They are not from Europe as the same suggests, but from China where they have been cultivated for centuries for food. Golden needles is the name for the dried flowers that are often used in soups. Kwanso and Flore-Pleno are cultivated garden varieties that were brought from China and were given to Arlow Stout. They are, in fact, registered varieties. Kwanso is probably the most invasive spreader, maybe even more than Europa. We love them and grow many varieties of Fulva (Korean, Yunnan, Switzerland, cypriana, etc.), but we don't mix them with modern hybrids.

Thank you Nan for the name of the species and history. If memory serves me right, my friend did give me what looks like Fulva Europa on google. I guess my love of orange is inherent, because I liked the color of it even back then. Although in 4 years it didn't do much in my heavy clay soil, apparently it can in good soil. I'm not much of an orange fan, probably burnt out from the "ditch lilies" that were all over our yard when I was a kid. My favorite true orange are the bright ones. Debra, Maui Sunrise is a favorite, one I need to get someday [maybe]; Maryl, Burning Inferno is my favorite of yours. David, Primal Scream is a favorite, and Nancy, the Mardi Gras Indian is nice and bright.

Brad: I think I like even Ditch Lily Orange, but have never fought to remove them, so that might have changed my mind too. No, I'm thinking more about the color. Vt. Autumn Fire is one that catches my attention not just because of the color but because its a late bloomer. Most of the orange shades I like are mid season bloomers and this apparently for you is later. Nice one............Maryl

Santorini Sunset looks like a bright one. Muy Calliente looks very interesting.

Oranges are probably the least popular color after yellow on auctions. People don't appreciate how vivid and varied they can be.

This is the only pic I took of Bob Marley this year. It did not like the heat against that off-white wall.

Spirit Fox looked good, though other oranges can be more vivid.

Carrick Wildon is always a later bright one.

Alabama Jubilee had a great year. So many oldies showed why they are classics.

Vitamin C --a good landscaper. The color itself is a bit dull close-up, but makes a bright spot. I have grown to like it. Made a long display. It looks best in sun, which we had a lot of last summer.

Solar Fire --an older Webster, very large, plain but showy

Tropical Fusion --very showy in the garden, even if the plant habit is not ideal. Nan showed this one for a few years.

Mantis - I like this collection of oranges! I think my favorites are Stop the Car and Spirit Fox. That's a gorgeous clump shot of Indian Ripple. Mine was very faded last season in the prolonged heat and drought. But it rebloomed better this fall than ever before. I even had a rebloom scape with three buds in early November.

You aren't afraid of color are you Mantis-lol. Crintonic Fireball was interesting. I favor orange/reds in particular which is how it is listed. I only regret you can't test for heat hardiness.......I can't pick my favorite really. If it's orange I am drawn to it........Maryl

Fiesta Latina was one I didn't get a lot of pics of this year because of sunny skies, but I recall its holding quite well. It is one I would not have ordered, but got in a trade. Most of my oranges are in the estate bed, as the owner likes hot colors.

Atacama Oasis --well budded, but may be a space hog.
