It sounds like you have the beginnings of a great tropical bed...if it were mine, I would first choose the anchor for each bed. The banana(assuming it is a 'hardy' musa) will be the largest specimen so I would use it in the 20' bed to the back and off center to the left. You can probably expect the banana to reach 10' or more this year if you keep it fertilized and moist. On the sunniest side of the banana I would plant a grouping of cannas and to the shadiest side I would plant the colocasia. They all love rich soil and moisture so ensure the bed is heavily ammended. If the cannas have colored leaves they will pop next to the banana. If you want to add a brug in this arrangement I would tuck it in between the cannas and the banana off center. Once the brug is old enough, it will be larger than the cannas but not as big as the banana. For the other 7' bed, I would use your largest brugmansia off center to the right and group another clump of cannas if you have it next to it. Are you planning to dig in your bruggie or leave it in a pot? A great alternative is to cut holes in a large pot and plant it in the ground pot and all. The roots will grow out of the pot and in the fall you can easily dig it up by cutting the roots around the pot with your shovel. Then lift the brug pot up and store in the garage. This method allows the brug to grow HUGE instead of limiting it's size in the pot. Anyhow, if you leave it in the pot it will stay smaller-probably 6' or 8-10' in the ground. Brugs are outstanding specimen plants and deserve to be a feature so don't plant more than one in each bed. I hope this helps, Cheers from the Island! Our "remodel" wasn't really a choice- had a water leak. We replaced some things, left others. I did change out an OTR micro to a real vent hood. Never even thought about the cabinets banging- until I went to open the corner upper I keep spices in. That's filled to the brim, has an extra storage mounted on the door AND has a lazy susan (moved up high enough that I can put bottles underneath the bottom lazy susan shelf), Did I mention it's packed? And I have nowhere else to put any of that stuff? Currently using those clear rubber bumpers. What we (meaning me, haven't told DH) PLAN to do is have that cabinet door cut in half and made into a bifold that opens the opposite direction. Flipping just the door won't work for us- it would hit the hood and not even come close to opening. Does the idea thrill me? no, but it's getting really old really fast not being able to open the door all the way.

Have you thought about buying used cabinets? You could keep watching on Craigs list in Indianapolis for used/new cabinets. We bought the whole kitchen that was just like new this way, it included the granite counter tops. It was a kitchen that someone put in a spec house when the people bought the house they wanted different cabinets, so they sold them.Also there are sites that sell used Green Demolitions is one of them, but along way from you. I needed an island to go with the cabinets. So we priced HomeDepot, Lowes, Ikea and a local cabinet maker. Maybe Lowes was having a special but they were the cheapest. If you do get Ikea and don't like the doors you can order doors for Ikea cabinets from semi hand made cabinets. They have the shaker style but you paint them yourself. I would look into the Amish cabinetmakers cabinets in your area or look for a used kitchen.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. It is so nice to receive so many helpful responses. I am aware that such a build is going to be more expensive that a traditional sub-development home and when I said we are on a budget. I didn't mean we have an unrealistic budget but rather we are trying to use our budget as effectively as possible. For example one of our neighbors spent a ton of money building up their lot to be a level lot and another neighbor built a walk out basement and worked with the slope of the land and I imagined saved a considerable amount by working with the land rather than against it. I am trying to study enough to make smart decisions like this that will make the build more economical. We are a family of 4 so we don't need lot of space and we are flexible on many points, so we are really trying to find the best combination that gives us the best bang for our buck. mushcreek gave me a good suggestion and I will do more research on that website. lazy_gardens: The plot is downhill from the road.
