I'll be driving through Houston next week, and there is a nursery there that specializes in Texas native and naturalized plants. Butterfly plants is one of their specialties. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to drop in and see if they have any E. havanense. But I'm a newbie to gardening and have never harvested seeds, so someone will have to walk me through the process. I do have a blue mistflower but haven't seen too many butterflies attracted to it. The only reason I know about the white version is because I saw it at Home Depot Garden Club's Q&A. And wouldn't you know it, HD doesn't carry it. But anyway that made me google the plant, and I saw where someone here had picked it as his/her plant of the year, I think back in '07. That's how I discovered this site. BTW, Sherry, I live north of Ocean Springs, north of the interstate, and we finally got some good rain yesterday, a real gully washer. Did you get any of that? And it was a little cooler this morning. I usually limit my time outside to about 30 minutes' worth of weeding and whatever before 8 a.m., but this morning I was able to stay outside and plant about a dozen pentas. Question: This is my first year to do any gardening (yes, I'm a late bloomer), so I tho't I'd try a BF garden. A friend told me to be sure to have host plants nearby (milkweed for monarchs), so I was wondering how close to the nectar plants should a host plant be? Linda

kwilson...please oh please oh please...? I'll send you a note, ok? Terryr, sounds like how things are here. If there isn't a wall of corn planted right up to the roadside, by August the pigweed and ragweed and other stuff is so high you have to take a chance and ease out there on country roads-stop sign or not. We always look for the oncoming wall of dust behind an approaching vehicle--one good thing about gravel roads I guess. And the gravel here isn't just your standard limestone, it's this wonderful river pebble mix which gives you the eerie feeling that you are cruising along on a bed of ball bearings. Which is mightily unsuitable stuff for sudden turns, swerves and stops. The indigo...yep, it's prairie false indigo or white wild indigo-baptisia alba. I have quite a few plants around that I have been watching over the summer, but there is something drilling into them and eating the seeds. I don't know if it's a weevil going in from the outside or something that was laid as an egg on the flower and developed from within but all the fruits I've picked have tiny perfect holes in them and weigh next to nothing. This plant is actually doing quite well around here and I suspect some wonderful person is quietly seeding the roadsides and railroad right of ways because all sorts of prairie stuff is popping up in the last 3 years.

You definitely should see a very good Fall show this year, they grow fast once they're established. I just added some soil conditioner and watered and they took off. The caterpillar disguising himself is ingenious and nature is definitely amazing. I think he's a wavy lined emerald moth cat? The cat in your photo is definitely having a bad hair day but maybe the hair deters predators? It looks so neat and I hope you spot similar caterpillars on your plant? I think they mainly go for plants that are in the composite flower family like yarrow, liatris, Black-eyed Susan, and asters? I've learned a lot through this forum and everyone is so friendly on here. I always admire everyone's flower and garden pictures. I'm always happy to see butterflies and other pollinators in my garden because I feel that I'm contributing positively to wildlife. I just wish I had more room lol.
