Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 9/11
Comments (34)I will start the thread for the new week a little later this morning-- but I wanted to respond to some of the later posts first. @pricklypearcactus of course I do not talk to my friends the way I sometimes talk to myself. Why give grace to others but not ourselves? It is a process. I am doing better but I have a long way to go. @Zalco/bring back Sophie! so glad you have rejoined us. There was no reason for you to feel you couldnt participate but I get that it is more fun and valuable when you are feeling good about your choices and lifestyle. I have posted less lately and I try to tell myself it is because I am busier-- but I need to face up to the truth that it was because I was slipping and not doing as well. I knew what I was doing but wasn't facing it head on-- that stops today. Smart move to stock the fridge with veggies! Every single time I slip it is because I have not shopped, planned or prepped. I also do not stop carbs/starches. I know that seems odd to many as it is the most common diet for those trying to lose weight. I find I need water soluble fiber in my diet -- my digestive system gets verrrrry sluggish without it. But also, this is a way of living for me. I can't imagine never having a slice of bread or oatmeal or pasta ever again. I am mindful of the proportion on the plate and choose healthier grains. I am comfortable with that-- it's a way of eating I can live with. Looking forward to your posts and progress, Zalco! Since I am restarting in a way, we can do this jumpstart together! @lucille - it is so impressive that you were able to make changes to reduce your medications. That is a huge accomplishment and i think highlights the way food affects our health. How wonderful that you have a new exercise companion. You have such great momentum and now an extra boost to your motivation! I look forward to hearing about your progress too. @roarah, I want to thank you again for your post. I spent a lot of time yesterday thinking about it-- surely thinking about your and your DD but also reflecting on my own history with eating and my current behaviors and my motivations. I can look back to my youth and teen years and see where I started some very bad behaviors (not worth going into now) and then fast forward to the current. My thinking is still effed up-- sure, I am working towards a healthier lifestyle. I want to have more energy, I want to be physically stronger and more flexible, I want all my organs to be less strained -- but how am I measuring my successes? By my appearance! If I look in the mirror and I don't SEE weight loss, then I dismiss all my progress in healthier living. In my mind, it only counts if it improves my appearance... and let me be honest, you don't become 100lb overweight without some body dysmorphia and denial at play so should I even trust what I see in the mirror. I really need to work on this. Much as my motivations are honest, my measures of success are skewed. I don't mean to overshadow you or your daughter's experiences, struggles and strides towards a healthier body. I continue to send you love and strength and wishes for the future. I just want to thank you for increasing our awareness.. MY awareness because I think we can all fall prey to the messed up messaging and messed up relationships with our bodies and eating....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/6
Comments (28)@pricklypearcactus I really do understand what you are dealing with-- and while it could be way worse as can be seen daily in the news, that doesn't change how it impacts your day to day. I went through a number of major work stressors in the period of time I allowed my weight to get out of hand -- a merger followed by a buyout then a move to another company with GREAT opportunities for me but very very long hours and periods of intense challenges. It wasn't until I started viewing my own health as every bit as important as my career, my team and the deadlines that I started to lose weight and return to a healthier life. The good thing for you is that you are aware and alert to the potential impact of your workload and stress-- I think that puts you steps ahead! Again, be good to yourself! Oh my @legomom23! We are all sisters in our food challenges-- I too find my balance leans way too heavily on fats and not enough on protein. I think I am pretty good on fiber but protein is definitely the struggle. I have only just been able to eat nuts again and I have definitely brought them back with glee -- I do like to include them in my diet because they bring in some minerals that are hard to get otherwise-- but really, I need to pull back on the quantity. I don't really think my fats are so out of control they are just way out of balance with my protein which is too low. I still struggle a bit with chewing meat and I was never a big meat eater. I do eat eggs and beans (not together!) a few times a week but I'm not much of a fan of tofu, tempeh etc. I'll need to add in some other sources of protein like quinoa and the higher protein vegetables and legumes. I was surprised to see how much protein is in wild rice-- something I love-- so I think I need to reeducate myself on good plant-based protein sources. My weight remains the same -- actually 1.2lb up from my lowest weight-- but I have maintained it. I have definitely lowered my calories and am very much back to my routine the last 2 weeks... and I have been more active. I can't explain the plateau. I started wondering if I needed to ADD calories but I don't think that's the issue. The only other thing I can point to is the diet pepsi. I am just about out of it-- and removed it from this week's shopping list so I guess I will see if removing it makes a difference. @gsciencechick I am so glad that you finally were able to go to the clinic! I appreciate the information you and @legomom23 have shared! We are all at different places in our journeys but still we all seem to struggle with some of the same challenges -- the information, experiences and support from everyone has been so helpful and I am inspired daily by all you share new recipes, new activities and your successes. ❤️🥗🥦...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/5/2023
Comments (33)Sue, any time I get called back for an ultrasound following a mammogram it’s unnerving. I’m sure they told you it’s pretty common but also know that doesn’t help your state of mind. I’ll be thinking about you this week. I’m trying to pick up the pace of my walks because a newer study says the cadence of one’s stride as well as the number of steps taken each day are positively correllated with better cardiovascular health and lower mortality. Continuing to eat healthfully and mindfully… my evening snack is now either a yoghurt or six almonds and six dried tart cherries. I went shopping with my mother yesterday and bought a sweater in a size small and was so pleased until I remembered I recently bought a down coat in size XL from Uniqlo to allow a heavy sweater underneath. Sizing really is ALL over the place! (Funky, i bought this coat because it’s more flat than puffy and one of the reviewers said it was the only coat she tried on that didn’t make her feel like she was wearing a duvet 😁 And I finally figured out why I don’t like down coats with the quilting baffles on the diagonal—- it looks like the underside of a turtle! ) Sorry for the aside!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 11/12/2023
Comments (5)Gscience - sorry you fell! Ugh, but it does sound like you are recuperating well! Hope it's a quick recovery from here on. Springroz - amazing Pilates consistency! That must feel fantastic! Funky- I hope you enjoyed your walk. We have been having lovely weather here as well, so I have been forcing myself to go along on the morning dog walks. Always glad I went, it's a good way to start the day. I had a good week mostly. Lots of walks, three good pickleball days, and three full body weight trainings. I have a great setup in my basement now that will allow me to progress through the winter and a goal to be strong to ski in February, so that should keep me motivated and moving forward. I'm still thinking about my bloodwork, nothing was alarming, but I was hopeful for some different numbers. But looking back honestly over the past few months I can see I wasn't really changing much up. So, I do have a couple tweaks I'm going to work on and see where I get. Mostly more fruits and vegetables, more water, more weight lifting, and some targeted supplements. I'm terrible at taking vitamins of any sort, but there is a theme in my bloodwork which might be helped with a couple additions. But, in the big picture, I am grateful for my good health so far in life, grateful for the mental health and mood boost eating well and exercising gives me, and grateful for my body which is getting stronger and allowing me to enjoy the activities I love. Can't let myself get down in the weeds too far :)...See Morelegomom23
