Austin or old rose to spill over wall or large pot?
Comments (16)The larger Austins, such as Abraham Darby (my favorite!), Teasing Georgia, Janet and Spirit of Freedom will all flop if you don't prune them hard. They're beautiful, fragrant roses which should look wonderful draped over a wall, although I would think they'd all be too big for pots. Mine are all disease-free but then all my roses are. I don't grow disease-prone roses such as the bourbons so don't know how those would do in southern CA but have no desire to when we have the teas, chinas, noisettes and Austins that do well here. Noisettes would probably also work well over a wall although of course they'll get very large. Ingrid...See MoreYour opinion please on the most beautiful, valuable old Austins
Comments (51)I grow many of the older Austins. In fact, I find myself to have an affinity with, if not a prefernce for some of the earlier English roses. My rose garden is just starting to bloom in the past two days. Many of the earliest blooming roses are the older English roses. The reds seem to be all opening, including; The Squire, Prospero, Wenlock, William Shakespear (Original) and William Shakespear 2000. Here are some images of some of the older English roses I grow and love: English Garden is vigorous healthy and has good rebloom in my garden. Pegasus is gorgeous, fragrant, healthy and prolific in my garden. My two plants are covered in buds and opening now. Less of an old rose character and more musk like though with large blooms. The Squire, a bit fussy, I grow him in a pot. But when he blooms, he's worth the trouble, 5 inch dark crimson blooms that take your breath away. There are more, but one mustn't go on too long. Cheers, Rideau Rose Lad...See More4 yr old Austins sprouting long canes
Comments (5)You may wish to contact them by email, regarding this. In the catalog, it mentions 'Heritage' at 7 feet, when allowed to grow taller. As I don't really know which you have, as it is actually offered in Climbing form, and since they offer it as such, its only a matter of which form you have & if you have the shrub form, then just a matter of pruning it, to keep it at the desired height, by following their own instructions to remove 18" in warm climates & repeating it through the season, to encourage more compact growth. (While leaving a few inches to allow it to produce fresh new shoots, to repeat flowering...) But, it would seem to follow, that the non-climber form of' Heritage' may require a slightly greater amount of pruning of at minimum, several extra inches, to keep it closer to 5 ft. than some others may require....See MoreHAVE: Earthkind roses: Belinda's dream, cl. pinkie
Comments (2)I have a 2 year old Teasing Georgia that I just dug up today. She is very large and healthy. I don't have the room or the climate for her. I have put her in a very large pot temporarily until I find a home for her. She will have to be pruned down for shipping, but she will have a nice root system on her....See Morebart bart
