I think it is Scrophularia, perhaps lanceolata.

kimpa, Lemon Mint (M. citriodora) has the pinkish-purple flowers you described. Spotted beebalm has distinct spotted yellow flowers accompanied by the soft lavender-pink to white bracts. Thanks ginibee but after looking up borage it doesn't quite fit the bill. It could be a wild origin plant, not a cultivar so perhaps it is in that family. It has come back two years in a row now and the bees and butterflies love it, doesn't last all summer but drops seeds that come back in spring. I will keep trying, perhaps someone will recognize it.
