Dining Room Dilemma

I would love some help with my dining room. It is 12' by 10'10". One wall is almost fully occupied by windows, and two other walls have very large (6') openings. This leaves a 12' wall for decorating. I have a 5' round dining room table on a round rug. There is almost 3' between the table and the blank 12' wall that needs decorating. I'm happy with the table, rug, and drapes, but the room feels unfinished. I would love to have room for a small table or cabinet on the 12' wall but I am not sure I do. I've thought about just a piece of artwork that is maybe about 3' square, or maybe a really large mirror or art piece leaning against the floor. Some have suggested a bar cart off to the side of the table with art above that. If I had it to do over, I probably should have gotten an oval table and that would have given me more room on the sides. I appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

I agree, an oval table would have been better. Do simple art and a bar cart. Or you could hang a "floating" buffet shelf with art and a bit of decor. Looks like the chandy is too large for the table and for the scale of the room.

The room could benefit from a new chandelier. If you have a need for a buffet, scootch back the chairs on that side of the room and see if you have enough room for something. It is also possible to buy console tables that are only 12" deep. I don't think one 36" square picture is going to fill the wall adequately. There was one poster a couple months ago who put family pictures in her dining room. This is unique, but it was a good way to fill the space with things she wanted to display. I'm all for breaking the rules when it suits you. Strangers shouldn't be able to tell you what you should or shouldn't put on your walls. :-) Here are some pictures of things other people did with similar space. This scheme shows an 8 x 10 area rug, a 6’ wide table, and 6 23” wide chairs. You always want a rug large enough so when chairs are pulled back all legs stay on the rug. This amount of space also allows guests to get up from the table without disturbing neighbors and for you, as host to comfortable walk around the table when guests are seated. For a 60” dining table, a 30” chandelier is appropriate. I notice in the plans there is a vaulted ceiling, so get a fixture which reflects on the ceiling as well as lights the table. Dimmer a must! Use the solid wall for your choice of wall decor. Because the room is smaller, I would place the buffet in the hall area. It can work as your server because it is close enough, but also add a lovely piece to the empty wall.

It looks like it's an older home with modern furniture which gives you a lot of latitude when choosing a chandelier. Look for something round and hang it about 36" off the table top. Remove the credenza if you feel cramped after trying Beverly's suggestion about rotating the chairs. Removing it would also enable you to center the table in the room better which would look more pleasing. I don't think you need any coverings on those doors or the window. It looks like there is a covered porch outside, so you aren't getting a lot of light coming through. Do you have privacy concerns at night in this room such that you do need window coverings?

Your inspiration photos have loads of patterns and large scale items along with color. If you were going for a more neutral, solid look, the windows would be more noticeable. Another possibility would be to add two large colorful pieces of artwork by the 2 windows and mimic a 3rd window using several framed art pieces above a bench or console, the way the first inspiration photo has used a grouping.

One large or two large coordinating pieces of art would be great on that wall. Not sure you have room directly opposite the table and chairs for a buffet but a bar cart closer to the corner might work. Pick art that speaks to you and it will be perfect. I would not lean anything on the floor as people are passing by to get seated etc. Above references are good.

You might look into adding one large or two medium sized pieces of art on that wall with a bar cart or small/slim console. Here are two dining room ideas from our portfolio which might aid you more with your current dilemma.
