Yeah that is a good idea if you have the resources. I've seen it done with bigger netting surrounding fruit to keep the birds out. This year I covered some of my pumpkins with netting that had holes no bigger than a millimeter across, far too small for the borers to get in. This thing was in my opinion borer proof, yet on at least three occasions I walked out to find a borer sitting on a leaf UNDER the netting. I was completely stupefied, I knew there was no way they could get in. There were no holes in the netting and they couldn't crawl underneath. So I figured these must have been borers that overwintered in the ground and came up from underneath. If that was true everything would be fine because there was no way they could have mated to produce any offspring. Yet somehow there were offspring and my pumpkins were attacked by the borers. I am done trying to stop them it is too much effort and nothing works short of killing all the insects around. Try it though it is a good idea.

I don't have alot of experience with this, but... The mosquitos in my wet swampy back yard are not particularly bad. I had a co-worker come over one day and I commented on the lack of mosquitos to him. He indicated that it was due to the large number of Sweet Gums on the property. There might be something to this as the turpines in the leaves are fairly strong. Another co-worker indicated that Weeping Willows, while very pretty, attract mosquitos. I have a few sickly willows, but don't see much difference in the mosquito count around them. As an experiment, I'm going to plant tobacco this spring to look at the insect repellent properties of this plant (works with some bugs, don't know about mosquitos).

But, you make a good point about trying to sew that stuff. I still have nightmares about sewing a chenille pillow for my DD! I hadn't even considered air circulation! My walled garden can get pretty hot during the summer. This is something I really need to think about. Thanks for mentioning it. Polly & Cooperbailey, yikes . . . those mosquitos sound horrid! I feel for you both. I don't get bitten very often when we're vacationing in Michigan, but my DH and kids get big welts from them. Well, again, thanks for all your thoughts on this thing. You've given me a lot to think about. If I do decide to try one, I'll be making my own. I'm too frugal to spend that much for one myself. I don't know anything bugproof, but.. I live in a wetlands. There is no such thing as reduce the water, lol. It's not about how to reduce them, it's about how to keep them where they are and out of where you are. Skeeters never liked me my whole life, but I get chomped on plenty out here. Ticks are a frigging nightmare. I probably went through 4-5 cans of deet for spraying off easily the summer of 2011 when we moved in. Then in 2012- and sometime early 2013 I gave it up. Now, I don't use deet at all. I can't recommend this for everyone, but his has worked for me, and worked for my sister when she first moved out here and was plagued by bugs. It's a whole regimen. Have a couple sets of clothes that are your outdoor/gardening clothes. Great if you can use long sleeves and legs. But more to the point, you wash these clothes together more often. Store these clothes together too if you can, and use sachets of bug repelling herbs in the drawer you use. There are an abundance of herbs that help out with insect warding. Use these things in your washing cycle for your gardening clothes, bath soap, lotion, hair shampoo, conditioner, and oils. Have body/clothing spray on hand to mist yourself throughout the day. Clove oil is a particularly good summer time scalp and hair oil and repels ticks and skeeters well. Rosemary water is good for dark hair mist, mint and citrus good for lighter shades. Rosemary, cedar, lemon scented herbs, and lavender are great scents to wear. Have a mister bottle on hand to spray yourself down and often as necessary. Also ward your doorways and patios with skeeter repellent plants like marigolds and catnip. Brush against these plants as you go about :) Basil gets a special mention. Use it to wear, to spray yourself with, tuck sachets of it in your gardening clothes. Outside your doorways and on patios and lovely and good smelling greenery- basil comes in many great forms. Eat lots of it. Right now, around here... the lemon pelargonium has been growing like mad and is ready for another cutting round, the lime basil and standard basil plants are starting second leaves, the newest round of lavender plants for the yard is showing late winter pirking up.
