najoba [nancy] had a wonderful tutorial with photos of growing daylilies from seed. You might do a search for it - or search for growing daylily seeds and that will bring up lots of information. I am not an expert by any means - but have had pretty good luck putting the potted seeds in morning light then transferring to bigger pots. If you have to grow in a basement during the winter, try searching for light setups. I am not familiar with what kinds of lights to use, but I have hung the long 2 or 4 foot long lights by small chains and they work fine. Good luck - seed growing is fun! Judith

Jason, I am new to hydroponic growing under lights, so keep that in mind! I researched alot before building my setup and found a lot of mixed reviews on LED lights. Im growing in my garage with no A/C so we are in the same boat. I looked at HID lights, but with the heat they put off, you would have to be able to vent them outside of your grow area. If only looking at efficiency (output per watt) HID lights actually are more efficient, but the light they provide is not exactly in the perfect spectrum for your plants, so some of the light is not usable. LED's are cheaper to run and put off far less heat. I bought a Black Dog 450 watt LED for my setup and it covers my 3x3 area perfectly. The only issue with LED is that it projects light out in more of a focused area. That can be problematic if you want to get the light really close to plants. The closer the better normally, but the closer you get, the less area you can cover. I have found that out with my LED. Also, with LED you pretty much get what you pay for. I spent a lot of money on mine ($1100). I figured I would bite the bullet and get something i knew was proven to work. Im sure that there is something cheaper out there, but I didnt want to experiment with them. The important thing to look out for is the spectrum of the lights and the intensity that you can put on your plants. I am going to document my grow on here and see how well a first timer with a good LED can do. My thread will be under the hydroponics section.

Karine, I've been using these things for 4 years now so they last at least that long. But when I tried to get reserve bulbs on Amazon, they were no longer available. Reviewers who contacted the manufacturer said the product was discontinued because the bulbs themselves were no longer available. I built a Japanese-style shoji lantern specifically for these fixtures so when they break, I'm pretty much screwed. I decided I will just replace the fixture with LED strips eventually. That said, it was worth it for me. But if you have an open shelf, the 2-foot ones will work, they'll just stick out awkwardly on the sides. If it is a closed shelf, I suppose you're stuck too. There are LED strips you can install instead. They are more expensive, though and depending on the kind of shelf you are using, you might need to rig them a bit, i.e. tape them to a strip of wood that you can then hang (if you have one of those wire shelf things). I didn't know much about LED grow lights when I got these T5HOs but if I knew then what I have thus far learned, I would have invested on the LED strips. In point of fact, if you find replacement bulbs in Canada, could you get me 3 as well lol Because you just might have the last hoard of 17-watt T5HOs on the planet. I hope this helps Pagan
