Ground jumpered to neutral at outlets

Tim Schroeder
last year

I'm renovating an old house I just bought and came across several electrical outlets where the ground was jumpered to neutral with a small piece of wire and I'm concerned. I'm not a professional electrician but I have a lot of experience and I know that the only place ground and neutral should connect is at the main panel, and the reasons why. All the outlets and lights in the house are two-wire (no ground) inside metal conduit with metal boxes. No romex or plastic boxes. I presume that the metal conduit is grounded at some point, because when I remove the jumper and plug a tester into the outlet, the lights indicate all is well - there is ground - therefore I cannot see a need for the ground to be jumpered to neutral. What should I do, just remove all the jumpers I can find?
