Welcome to the New England Gardening "Show Us Your Gardens" photo thread for November.

This is a place to post photos and to discuss what is in your New England garden this month. All New England landscape and garden photos are welcome. Since autumn is nearing its end, we may see some remaining flowers and colorful foliage along with more photos of general garden evergreens, bark, berries, winter decor, and scenery as well as indoor gardens and plants. If it is a photo taken in your New England garden or your yard in the month of November it is fair game to post it here.

My views have changed a lot in just a few days:

Last Thursday there was still color

But this morning, all the foliage color is gone and there are only a few brown leaves clinging to the white oaks and young beeches.

The monkshood are still blooming in the first photo in each pair, and I need to dig them up and move them. I don’t want to leave them for someone who may not be aware of their high level of toxicity.

So far my garden has been mostly frost free. Last night I snapped a few pictures after work.

Most of my impatiens have faded away due to cold and lack of sunlight. This pot on the deck is still going strong or relatively strong given they are impatiens and it's November.

I know Tradescantia can be weedy. I cut this one to the ground after the first flowers faded and now I have this not too shabby flowering plant.

Ah, Cleomes! I thin out hundreds of seedlings in late spring/early summer but I think they are worth the effort.

The pollinators appreciate the late blooming mums This is C. weyrichii Apricot.

Aster Ezo Murasaki is sort of a thug but perfect for the dry garden next to my driveway.

A new to me this year hardy mum from Avant Gardens called October Glory.

One of my cats watches the moon rise from the deck. The weather is spectacular right now. I hope we don't pay for it later!

NHBabs, beautiful sky in that first photo! The fall views do change quickly.
Sue, I envy your mums this year. I wish I knew why mine struggle to hold on each year. I have hillside Sheffield pink and Clara Curtis.
I’m at a friend’s house in the San Francisco area. These are roses from her yard. They are so beautiful I just wanted to share.

A little chilly and very overcast out there this morning, but my DH assured me yesterday we were due for some sun today. Looking at the forecast, for sure, by 11am sun is out, clouds are gone and stay that way the rest of the afternoon. BUT - looks like we are in for about 5 days of cloudy after that with some rain coming in Tuesday night into Wednesday. So, guess if I need to move anything, this is the time to do it. We could use a little rain too. I haven't even ventured out there to see the impact of the cold snap. Soon as it warms up a little we're outside for a change. Pruning roses today - but we're taking our time with the clean up. Trying to recover from a tough week. I don't know, what do people do who don't have gardens to help with recovery? [g] Babs, family disruptions, hoping they are behind you and you are able to enjoy the garden season. I'm hoping we can do the same. We'll see. Cold snap killing early plants and bulbs....well. I'm going to take a good look around out there today and see what suffered and what came through with flying colors. From my window I can see a patch of snowdrops still blooming that don't seem to have skipped a beat. So more of those in the fall if I can manage it. Scilla seems to usually do really well and boy does it reseed and spread. And no critters seem to bother either of those. When I looked out the door the day after the coldest morning, the Hellebore I could see was all bent over to the ground, but I see it seems to have come back up. Happy Spring - enjoy the weekend!!

I'm just tickled that a hummingbird actually visited your Weigela, Dee, because I really wanted to add one to my plans for a Hedgerow and I do like every plant to earn it's keep on my small property. Pretty spring flowers, polinators, easy care AND hummingbird attractor. That is going on my list for sure. I do love that 'Beverly Sills' Iris and I could actually be a big Iris fan except for the amount of work they require because they have to be divided so frequently. Or should be I've thought. The Iris I have now, was a NOID and it has turned into a great plant. It hasn't been divided and instead has spread out and increased. And I've not seen rust on it at all, which is the second reason I cooled off on the idea of a lot of Iris. It would be nice to pick up another Beverly Sills at least. I am happy to grow a few and see how they do, as long as I don't have to be too invested, in case they become too much trouble. They're also out of bloom so much of the year, I forgot that. I do have a variegated one that at least makes up for that too. I'm working on a new plan to add those to a corner of my front bed where I am taking out a grass that became way too aggressive of a reseeder. I'm reluctant to add another grass now. I already have a Nepeta right there, so the Iris would go with it and I can move the poppy in that corner too. A little late to do anything about it now, but maybe in the fall. Deanna, I just took a walk around the garden this morning and I'm so excited because the roses are full of big fat buds and starting to open. June 1st is the date I expect them and they are right on time. Penelope a small flowered one time bloomer is the first bloom open. But the rest are right behind that. Last season we had so much consistent rain that the garden seems to be better than usual this spring, especially the roses. So, I feel the same way, some of my plants are getting ready to all bloom at once. The end of May beginning of June is a busy season for my garden. I'm going to try to clean up the front bed this morning and put down new mulch to make sure nothing detracts from the display. I made a spreadsheet once called Six on Six. I used it to develop a gardening plan that chose 6 main plants for 6 months of the growing season. I lost track of that and didn't finish it but I'm reminded of it and want to pick it back up again. I felt it helped me to spread the bloom season out over a longer period of time. Deanna, I came across a bulb blooming in my vegetable bed and don't know what it is yet either. I'm going to have to take a photo and figure out what it is. Your Star of Bethlehem is very pretty and a very pretty name too! For me Nepeta usually grows pretty quickly into a larger size. Don't you just love the buds on the Oriental Poppies?! As for being dry - this season has not been enough rain yet at all. I've been watering some. I do have my rain barrels up and thankfully we finally got enough to fill them this weekend. I had one filled early and used that all up. I cut my water bill in half last year, but I think it was mainly because we had so much rain. But the rainbarrels are really making a difference for me. I'm planning to add more.

Babs, I also love the wild part of your garden. It is so soothing to look at. And leave it to nature to develop a wonderful composition with no help from us. I’m wondering if you will have a garden where you will be living in Wisconsin? Has that been settled yet? Glad to hear your Hydrangea paniculatas are still looking good. Mine are doing okay, even in full sun, although I plan to try to move ours to less sun. I’m surprised they do so well in drought and heat. Deanna, disappointing to have a year like this. Deer on top of it. So they eat the buds on the azalea for next year? Frustrating, I’m sure. I also noticed that plants that were growing next to a new lasagna bed from last fall, did wonderful this year. I have too many areas where my soil really needs work. I’d love to just lasagna bed everything I could, but, alas, not going to happen this year. I’m going to try to collect bagged leaves from my neighbors and build as many as I can find time for. I’ve done them in the fall before and it has worked great for me. It really gives me a jump on them breaking down to go through the winter. This has been a good year to gain some experience with more drought than usual. I am very surprised at how many of the plants that wilted…sometimes stayed wilted for a week or more - still came back, like your lungwort. So, I will worry less next time. And actually, I can see the areas where the lawn was affected the most, and could certainly apply more water there to prevent the grass from dying all together. Sue, you are so lucky to have all that compost right down the street. And it certainly shows in your results. We normally put down a lot of shredded bark mulch and unfortunately, this was the year we did not have the time to do it. So the drought was worse. Fingers crossed next year we will find the time!

Okay, now I have some time to see everyone’s photos and post a couple. Deanna - Nice group of photos - I didn’t winter sow this year, I’d love to see what you do with the Clarkia later. That is a pretty winter scene. We were fortunate not to lose power too, but we barely had 5 inches of snow. Friends and family in NH lost their power overnight and then got it back by noon the next day, thankfully. They had almost 15 inches of wet heavy snow. Your crocus patch looks vigorous! Mine are a little anemic this year. That sunset is amazing - not just a few clouds coloring, but the whole sky! Cute cat…does it live outdoors? Sue, I guess you can tell where you have the most shade by where you still have snow left. Another patch of crocus that looks very vigorous! Love that! Your backlit Hellebore is so pretty! My foliage was pretty yellow when it first sprouted. Yours looks like it has large leaves. MGallica - LOVE the snowdrops! That is a lot of volunteers from a small planting. I just started planting snowdrops about 5 years ago and I was impressed by how much they reseed, so I decided last fall to add more in other areas. They came up fine but now I’ll have to wait to see them make a good showing. Here is the spread I had that was also from a very small amount of the original bulb… This Hellebore is always the first one up... Not a good day to try to get the crocus it's windy. This location is the only place in the garden I still have crocus. The critters ate a lot of different varieties of them. Not sure the name of the purple but it reseeds prolifically. I have a bed on the other side of the driveway from here that has only reseeded crocus from this bed. I don't know if you can see it but the rabbits were chewing on my Clethra this winter. They also chewed all the stems on a small Calycanthus so low I had to cut it back to the ground.

So far the hardy mums have done well this year, Deanna. My only complaint is some bloom so late you aren't out in the garden enough to enjoy them. I've been bringing cut flowers of Sheffield into the house. They last a good long time in a vase.

I love San Francisco and obviously so do the roses. Enjoy!

Surprise, there is a November thread already - good job Babs! Glad to see you are taking lots of photos of your property. That first photo is gorgeous! I love the mist in the background and the color of the sky with the pretty clouds. Quite a constrast to no leaves! We haven't gotten to that stage yet.

Sue - lots of pretty plants still blooming in your garden. You do get your money's worth!

That C. weyrichii Apricot is a very pretty color! My Mums bloom late too but at least this year, the warm weather is so extended that I feel like I am getting my money's worth. What a cute photo of the cat enjoying the darkening sky!

Deanna - I love your friend's roses - the color combinations are so pretty!

I was out yesterday moving plants around - it was such gorgeous weather, I didn't want to go back in the house. [g] My Mums are still blooming but after a rain, they splayed open and are half on the ground. Doesn't matter, they are still very pretty in beds of leaves.

This is 'Beverly' this morning. I am really enjoying this rose. You can see how tall it is. It was not described as a climber but it sure seems to want to perform that way. After deadheading the first blooms, these canes shot up about 8-10ft. And really the photo does not do it justice. When I walked out the front door earlier - the stems are nice and red and it's just a very pretty sight. I do want to provide some support next year.

Here's a close up of a few blooms...

This is 'Savannah' Another rose that a photo doesn't quite capture how beautiful it is. It has a luminous quality to the color and the petals arrange with a button center like an old rose. Both roses are still very fragrant.

Here is a very poor photo of my Penstemon 'Dark Towers'. A few weeks ago it was gorgeous. Attractive seedheads and multi shades of red, still looking pristine. It's looking quite raggedy today. I'm moving them around this fall to try to get a better combination of their fall colors.
