Could this work for hosta seedgrowing?
Comments (8)I do not know how well it will work. It seems that this is only for a small number of plants in an appartment, like for herbs in the kitchen, you would not want to do that in a house. All the plants would have horizontally flat leaves when you plant them outside. Watering - I read watering from the top, collecting at bottom. Hosta seedlings like to stand with lower roots in water, mine now have 3/4 inch standing water. This structure you probably have to water every few hours, a pain. Heat - he grows at room temperature. Hosta seeds like to have 76 to 80 dgrs to germinate, seedlings around 72-76. Some seedling grow on the surface, might fall off here. Light - next to a large window without curtains would be OK. We use fluorescent lights 1 inch above leaves. mixture - hopefully the cells can take soilless mixture with a little perlite. cell depth - he might have constant cell depth, right now I have 4 inch tall seedlings in 9 oz drinking cups. He possibly has no flexibility in changing cell size as plants grow. Bernd...See MoreHostas as art work
Comments (14)Thank you all - the Sagae is my favorite shot. I made 16 x 20 inch prints. I cost me less than $10.00 at Sam's Club - and it only took an hour to print them. The mats and frames were half off at Hobby Lobby - so the whole project cost me less than one framed and matted print from a store at the mall. Plus, it has personal value. Of course - my neighbors thought I was a crazy lady - out at dawn and during rain showers leaning down taking tons of pictures. But, they probably think I'm the 'crazy hosta lady' anyway. :)...See MoreHard work for happy hosta
Comments (13)That oak tree is quite frankly known as the "resurrection oak", as it has come back from the dead three times already! It was about 3-4 years old and someone snapped off the central leader. I trained it back and same thing happened again - could have been deer, my younger sons, who knows, Maybe a lawn mower accident, happened to a few of my trees in pots and in the ground. Finally planted it in the ground and it got broken again. BUT it had good root stock so I moved it to Virginia as a 4 ft whip. Worried a tad about the 3 regrowths from the broken center leader but then planted it in bad clay and said " Go to it, young oak tree" One son caught me fertilizing it with chicken manure (special grade) and said no way that tree dies now! So, no, it won't die; yes, good to be concerned, as I am a spokesman too many times for dead trees that are mulched to their death. The soil line will be below the current tree "shoulders", so I am sensitive to the problem. Since I planted the oak slightly high ( which is probably why it is growing well) I will be watchful. Thanks for the concern. Ken, I do have some of those old Banyai banana plants to give away again - just can't kill them. Bruce...See MoreWork horse hostas!
Comments (12)Work horse! If the definition of hosta work horse is: grows quickly, divides often and looks great; the hands down winner for me is Paul's Glory and/or Stained Glass. Just bought Rainforest Sunrise - already divided it, gave some away and am looking forward to it doing very well thanks to you guys. I always plug Lancifolia as the perfect edger: it may be kind of boring - all green (my partner hates it and always wants me to get rid of it) but the lawnmower wheel goes right underneath it without chopping up the leaves, I don't have to mulch underneath it, and it blooms purple profusely in September (latest blooming hosta?). It grows quickly so 1 plant could be 10 plants in 3 years, 100 plants in 6 years!...See Morebkay2000
