brown spots on my rose bush ???

hi i just discovered these brown spots on my rose, i m unsure because i’m fairly new into growing roses in my garden. please let me know what can o do to help my queen of elegance bush

The brown areas sort of look like what is happening to a few of mine.I hope it's not.This stuff spreads like a plague.I'm leaning towards bacterial canker that is on my plants. Has it been rainy in your location recently?I think it is distributed that way. I had to cut away a lot from one plant and still don't know if it is going to survive. Here is a link to some photos. This morning (29th July, our 40th Wedding Aniversary no less!) my cup runneth over. I looked at one of my Zephirine Drouhins and one of my Chandos Beauty roses, only to find on some of the leaves, what looked like a horrid, thick, rusty brown ooze in patches. What in the world is it? Google hasn't helped. Anyone got any ideas on what it might be, and how to treat it? I'm really having a miserable time with the roses: black spot has nearly decimated a load of them, then rust, and now, just for variation sake, The Ooze. Help, plooze.

Hi Patti! Welcome to the Rose Forum. Your rose doesn't have bugs, its a fungus disease. Rose foliage is susceptible to many assorted fungal diseases and most roses need to be sprayed with a fungicide in our climate to protect the foliage. Start spraying in early spring and spray (just a quick mist) with fungicide every two weeks during the growing season.

I have a few spray containers of "Garden Safe Insecticidal Soap" - active ingredient is like 1% potassium salts....would that be better? Just discovered the nymphs on more roses so I'd have to buy additional containers - expensive compared to mixing a gallon or two of Sevin. Don't get me wrong, I hate using ANY of this stuff, but neither do I want to lose these roses.

That's Blackspot, a fungal disease. Its going to be common in the spring and fall, when weather is wetter.

where are you.. big city name...

in my MI ... the leaves will be falling off the plants in the next few weeks.. and they will be completely picked up.. and shipped off the property ...

and the canes will be cut back and sprayed with an appropriate fungicide to insure the plants break out clean in spring ...

when i had over 150 roses.. i HAD TO SPRAY about every six weeks combining the fungicide with a systemic insecticide ... the constant spraying was one reason i quit growing roses.. when the kids came a long ...

prevention is the key.. you must be proactive next year ....

there is nothing you can do to save those leaves ... if you want.. you could cut them all off .... and at least make the plant look better ... ken

i’m in chicago , rosarian. i just planted bunch of roses. new dawn, pearly gates , and summer romance. everyone of them are doing great and so was this one. except i just noticed these. i’m so upset. cuz i really loved the old classic rose fragrance it provided. with just a few blooms my lawn was filled with rose smells. but now these brown spots

As Ken has stated, this is a fungal disease that MUST be managed to limit the damage it can do.

"Managing" it means starting early with preventative (fungicide) sprays applied at least every 2 weeks through the growing season, and removing any leaves that develop spots.

If you find you have roses that Blackspot badly (like the one in your photos) and you don't want to use fungicides to control disease, then replace the offending plant with one that is less disease prone. There are always better choices when you discover you've got a variety that gets too much disease.
