Kathy: Nice photo of CIM. I did notice that MARGO REED INDEED is listed as SEV but I noticed yesterday it is dying back like the dormants do. Good point on the Stout Medal but if a winner had to get votes in all regions, I highly doubt any of them would have won. Thanks for the input Seil - I've got Verdun on my "buy" list for the spring, but I'm the opposite of you in sources of plants. Probably 50% of the potted or bare root roses I grow end up failing within a year if not their first summer from canker. Even well established ones I got from Cliff at his nursery closing had a pretty dismal survival rate. For me, if a band can survive its first winter with me it has a good chance of a happy lifetime with me. Perhaps the adversity makes it tougher? Titian - it's good that Summer Memories sounds like a winner. I have mine in the front and while it survived in my zone 4 pocket it's too soon to judge its blooms. Just curious - what is it you don't like about Masqurade? I don't have it, but it looks quite nice. SoFL - glad you like the bush shots. For me, that's one of the criteria for a winner rose, if it has enough blooms to warrant a whole bush shot that's interesting. FragranceNutter- beyond planting them and pruning in the spring, I'm lazy enough that I don't do any significant maintenance on them which is why I don't need the full-time gardener. I spent maybe 2 hours yesterday deadheading and taking photos (mostly the latter) and that is it for the week. This is one of many reasons I look out for "heroes" - shape up or ship out! Junco, Julia C is indeed a wonderful hardy rose! I am zone 6, but some parts if my property are zone 5. I love Julia C-she is winderful!, but has been growing in the shade & does well-very vibrant buttery yellow anyway! I olan to buy another to put at top of my cold front hill , because she is so hardy! I have had many yellows & Julia C. is the most hardy. i gave up on Grahm Thomas. Teasing Georgia is too tall & leggy-floppy. I love Roald Dahl, too, does well so far, but I can grow most DAs. Bring Me Sunshine is a new DA. She is a vigorous one growing maybe 7ft & blooms a ton, says Ben Hamilton, on you-tube video. Very fragrant! I ordered this beautiful new golden yellow! Of all the DAs-yellow-she may be the best!!!!!! I hope!!!! I definitely woukd try her! I have had the same experience with Heavenly Angel Ice--nowhere near the height it is supposed to be or the display. As I look at Stout winners, so many just haven't performed or aren't that impressive. Dorothy and Toto--maybe after a mild winter there are a few blooms. Heavenly United We Stand--yes, a good daylily, but as has been noted on this forum, there are a lot of this form and color out there. Scarlet Pimpernell--we shall see, but it was all splotches last year (I got it as a bonus). Webster's Pink Wonder--didn't do well here, though Davisson's Boss Lady (a kid) is nice. Carnival in Mexico--never had good bud count here or height here. Entwined in the Vine--I mistakenly gave it away. Its kid, Kingdom Bound, is very good and more showy. Even going back farther, Fooled Me may have been an important parent, but I disliked its weedy growth here. Primal Scream can be a problematic performer with poor height, though I have seen an impressive plant. Ed Brown, maybe an important parent, but rather tender here. All American Chief--great plant in every respect.
