composite over wood to update front porch
Comments (5)I agree putting composite decking over the top of old decking is a bad idea, but there are other items you listed that you were looking to upgrade (columns, rail, spindles). I may be misunderstanding what changes you want to make (a picture would help) but spindles (balusters) and rail can be replaced without starting from scratch. I'm not sure what you were planning with the columns, but I am assuming that they are columns that support a roof over the porch. There may be some things that can be done here to change the style as well without totaling starting over. If you could be more specific and maybe provide some pictures you may get some very creative ideas of what can or can not be done. riles...See MoreComposite porch flooring recs?
Comments (3)FWIW I'm a big fan of composites for decking. Maybe I don't have an aversion because a deck isn't really integral to the house envelope. A porch floor is integral and I would feel it would be out of place. My front porch is T&G wood that has some rot issues, would love the durability of non-wood, but I can't bring myself to go with synthetics. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those. It's funny because my siding is fiber-cement (but you can't see the diff). Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreBullnose Composite Material for a Front Porch - does it exist?
Comments (1)Tendura is composite porch flooring and you can get quarter-round, half-round, and ogee trim that should achieve the look you have in mind. As far as composites in general, they do rout very well if there's a specific look you have in mind....See MorePorch Railing: vinyl or composite
Comments (4)We're using composite which feels like some sort of metal. (Azek Trademark Reserve,www.bostoncedar.com) It was pretty expensive, (more than I spent on the decking and framing)but I wanted something solid that didnt shake and flex and was also maintenance free. The vinyl looks nice from a distance but seemed very flimsey to me....See More3onthetree
