I am so sorry that the pictures are so confusing. Let me try again. Here is the current floor plan to give you an overview of the apt. Two bedrooms in the back, 2 bathrooms adjacent to the bedroom , then kitchen, dining room, and finally, living room in the front. Big window that I am referring to is in the living room by the front. This was the drawing done about 14 years ago when we first renovated the apt. The more specific areas that I like to change in the apt this time: completely renovate the kitchen, take out the closet in the living room by the staircase, and put up cabinet /shelves by the front window. This is an enlargement of current layout of the kitchen and dining room ( again done about 14 years ago). I like to replace the kitchen to this (drawn by the cabinet guy). This is essentially the same layout except I asked for the peninsula to be removed closer to the wall with oven and fridge, so that the living room will be 3 ft bigger. Currently there is 7 feet between the wall with oven/fridge and the counter. So I will make it 3-4 feet instead. This is the current area by the window on the right sided ( left sided is similar). Note that the heating panel in the second picture under the window, above the floor. It is our only source of of heat. I like to replace the area adjacent to the big window with cabinet and shelves ( shown below, drawn by the cabinet guy again). I actually like to get rid of the closet adjacent to the stair ( the cabinet guy left it in the picture below) Since the heating panel above under the big window is the only source of heating in my apt, is this arrangement going to compromise the heat or cause damage to the wood cabinet/shelves above? here is another view of what I like to achieve with next renovation, except I want to get rid of the closet in the living room shown below " view E" Please critique the layout and give me advise about the heating panel. Talley Sue...I searched and re-read the evolution of your triangular closet. I will be getting a small brass plaque engraved and attached to one of the visible walls of my closet. I haven't worked out the exact wording yet, but it will read something like "In honor of the inspiration of time and space coordinator extraordinaire, Talley Sue NYC." You've asked several questions in the above responses and I've been trying to take photos to go with the answers. Christmas prep keeps interfering, but I will get them answered. 1. ...another thought—the stuff that sits in that handy space on the table leaf: I might put them in some sort of container... I haven't had time to go to town (45 minute drive, one-way ) to get a dedicated container, but I did measure the space. I can fit a box from 5 1/2" to 6 1/2" wide by moving the leaf down to the left until it almost touches the other wall. The box can be 15" to 17" long. For a temporary "Quick-and-Dirty" solution I'm using one of the cardboard boxes that hold 12 suet cakes for my wild birds. The box is 5 1/4" wide and about 16" long. For now it's holding the rain gauge (normally stays on the front deck but has to come inside for winter ), an extension cord for the two snowmen that are suppose to go on the front steps (it normally lives in the large "electrical stuff" Rubbermaid container in the basement ) two strips of the oak flooring boards to use to match colors, paint chips for the living room and hallway, and the spare "specialty bulbs" (halogen and LED ) that fit in the LR ceiling fan, front porch light, desk lamp, etc. It also holds the remote control for portable Penguin air conditioner, which will be sold now that I have central A/C! The large portable unit does not have a place to attach the remote and it was always "misplaced." Now it has a dedicated home until I find a way to attach it to the Penquin and get them both out of the house! It is much nicer having these items all in the one box. It's easy to pull the box down and take out what I need. The door stopper wedge and the ceiling fan/light remote stay on the edge of the lower shelf. I use them often and can reach them very easily. I put a few more DVDs to fill in the back of this shelf. This way the wedge and remote cannot "migrate" and get lost. Can you tell we've cut pieces of thin "pressed board" to use as shelf liners on the wire shelves. They are less than 1/4" thick and are easy to cut to size on the table saw. They help items slide in and out and keep smaller items from falling through the wires. I know companies sell acrylic liners, but these very inexpensive home made liners are working fine. We have a few more to cut. I've put them on nearly every shelf in every closet in the house. This should link to the photo showing the containment box. You can see I also moved the Mandoline box to the top shelf edge. I seldom use it, but I do want to keep it near the kitchen.

My coat closet is in a small unheated small vestibule on my house exterior, could you build one around either your front or back door. Another less costly option is a pax wardrobe in the living room near the door for storage and coat hanging. My shape house is similar to yours here is my front vestibule. One side is empty in the winter I have a boot bench and the rest of the year a small mail desk and the other is a reach in closet. there is a second door from here into my house.

Alas never took a photo of it as far as I can remember. This one is similar and looks to be about the same size. MIne had more detail outside but no drawers. I was looking for a larger piece but the labels on the shelves won my heart and being small it fit nicely into the small bedroom. Celestina, I had a half rack of that sort of design made of cast metal that might have been brass that fit nicely in the front hall. Fastened to studs it took up far less room and couldn't fall over. Sold that on eBay long ago and had never seen anything like it since until just now. Pictures are upside down but it is exactly the same design. If you could find a shoe cubby that looked okay with the old fashioned vibe it would terrific looking so long as you manage to keep it cleared off. You wouldn't think something that simple could hold so much! I really like the pieces acm found particularly the wood and metal 3 shelf one. Just work really hard to keep the number of things hung to a dull roar.
