Follow Up: Transitioning from Covid Hair

I had my hair cut a little more than a week ago. Many of you suggested going back to my old style-- the length I wore from my early 30s until now. Don't be mad LOL! I will likely land there but for now, I went for collarbone length. It won't look much different to you from a front view-- but she took about 1-2" off the front and closer to 4" in the back. I have much more movement now without the back weighing everything down and it looks cleaner and fresher. I can tease it to add more volume but I like it best like this-- just dried with a round brush. No product other than Keratase Ciment Thermique which protects from heat damage and adds shine and a touch of body.

and here I am this morning ... I have no idea why I fret the length because I still wear it UP 3/4 of the time.

PS I think my dental work is done. I have an appt later this morning and I believe it will be my last for now.

I hesitate to share my inspiration photos.. I only wish I looked as great as these two women. I actually can have my hair more closely resemble their styles but it requires teasing and I don't like to do that daily. I will try my velcro rollers one of these days. My stylist thinks my hair is pretty similar to Diane's and thinks I could easily get there with velcro rollers and teasing

Hi Olga and forumites, I have not been posting much lately, as I have a life of pretty diversified busy-ness! Have to spread myself around too much to spend much time chatting on the forum. Nevertheless, I am spending significant time out in the garden - and have the tan to prove it! Not all gardening tasks are accomplished, though. One thing I need to do sometime is...put my clone of Mariola in the ground! Yep, I was able to get one one after begging Trish at Ashdown last year. I received it in early May, potted it up and it is doing well, starting to send out new shoots. I am trying right now to decide where to place it permanently, with ultimate size in mind. It is a well-branched but rather diminutive little thing that gives no hint about how big it might get. Olga, since this is your baby and you've had it growing the longest, do you think it safe to assume that it will probably be along the lines of a 4-5 foot tall bush when mature? And, would any shade from nearby taller bushes (not trees) be detrimental? Thanks much, Rick

if you mean the search for her relatives on the who are you show, they generally always only search one family line it is all they really have time for and if her family was all in that area that may be all she wished to do. And it showed her and her husband a few times in the show so yes she was married this was filmed not long ago. She has been losing weight since her diabetes diagnosis. I thought it was great that she went back to the old homestead, I would not be surprised if she buys that land, it was a very pretty area. Where she met up with her boys at the end was just beautiful with the waves lapping up and the moss dripping from the big oak trees. My kinda place.

One comment I haven't seen here -- not all ponytails are created equal. I had medium to long hair most of my professional life and I wore my hair up a lot. I wore it in French braids, twists, top up and the rest down, using clips or barettes at time -- and even simple pontytails. I clerked for a judge and worked in a very large law firm and I am certain I wore ponytails in the office and in court -- BUT, if I wore a ponytail for work, it was likely to be at the nape of my neck, not higher than mid level, and I would have worn some kind of barette, clip or an adorned band that made the ponytail look more finished. A short scarf tied around the base. A wide elastic that matches your hair color might work, but not colors or plain rubber bands, no scrunchies, nothing you would wear to the gym. Neither DH nor I would consider a comment about your hair -- at least as far as anything you've said, to be harrassment. It wouldn't seem to be relevant to the evaluation of your performance and it doesn't sound like it was a negative in that regard, but more of what was intended to be a construcive suggesion for things you could improveIf you look like you just came from the gym or fell out of bed, it will have a limiting influence on even a stellar preformance. And it's something you can easily do something about -- not like she told you your nose was too big or your bust too small. If you are in the public eye for the company and image is important, then you're better accepting the comment as it was apparently intended. Don't let some of the comments here get your knickers in a twist -- just take an honest look at the ponytail you are wearing. Search magazines or the internet for some ideas on how to dress up the look. Something as simple as learning to spplit the base and flip the ponytail through to create a horizontal twist at the base might be all you need. I know a woman who wore that style most of the time I saw her -- and she is a psychologist who looks very professional. Annie, you are right... and that was my thinking in ordering it even after I discovered that the daisy dress now fits. However, where it is a little too big now is in the bodice.. for a surplice dress that means some gaping. At my current weight, i can tack it or pin it... but as I lose more weight (knock on wood), i imagine I will lose more through the bust and back which could make the gapping more than a pin can manage. IDK. I do have wide shoulders and a large rib cage -- meaning the bones, not the fat on top lol.. so it may not be too bad. I think the waist/hips etc will be fine and very adaptable-- though the waist and tie are sewn in vs an elastic band. This is part of what makes it attractive IMO.. it looks more presentable AND it cinches in more than an expandable elastic band. I tried it on yesterday "as I was".. hair in a ponytail, slippers and (ahem) no bra. I thought it looked flattering and nice even then. I will try it on this weekend with proper undergarments and shoes and see what I think. It isn't terribly expensive so if it looks great when done up, I will likely keep it. I think it could work for a lot of occasions ... and since my weight loss is slow/steady, I would imagine it would work for awhile without alterations-- but weight loss is a funny thing. You can't always predict what will change. (Also, I will continue to watch to see if the smaller size comes back in stock) Thanks all for your thoughts, encouragement and recommendations!

You all are very kind! It probably says something that I rarely wear it down-- but I like it for now.

I didn't realize the photos were so big LOL.. see, I use selfies to check my makeup etc because I can't see well in the mirror. I feel like one of my 20something nieces with all these selfies!

Also, selfies have helped me to discover that I need to return to the browner pink lipsticks/glosses. All my favorites have been discontinued. The much loved CT pillowtalk is too coral orange for me.

Thank you! I like the color too! The first photo was taken in the evening after my hair appt-- there are some weird shadows and the light is pretty golden. I have since used purple shampoo to tone down the gold. Here it was this morning-- a little more blended but still some ombre which is kind of hard to see (also wearing pillow talk lips here-- and I think in the first photo also. I need to do some lipstick shopping.)

Jinx, I used to use John Frieda Blonde .. but I stopped when I started using Virtue Full (for volume-- and it has really helped!). What does this do different from the purple shampoo? (I use Aveda)

I am hesitant to use a leave-in because of my fine hair-- but if you swear by it, I will give it a try. Though I AM trying to still hold on to the brunette coloring too, i want my highlights to be as ashy as possible.. not gold, not honey-- ashy! (I make my stylist crazy lol!)

I feel like it provides good protection from heat styling — I use a flat iron after blow drying. My hair feels smoother.

I think it slightly helps with volume, and doesn’t feel heavy at all. If not something you think is needed, though, definitely don’t waste money on it. :)

My hair is ashy now, too, due to grays starting to come in! I think our colors are similar … (also, I have glasses exactly like yours!) …

Funky is my twin! LOL. We have the same hair color, about the same hair cut, and the same freaking dental problems and a few other assorted health issues.

LOVE the cut Funky! I got about 4 inches cut off mine, and I went a little too short. Fortunately it grows.....

Also, another vote for the John Frieda Blonde products. They do seem to help me stay a smidge more toward the blonde end, vs the brassy/mousy brown end of my color spectrum.

Two beautiful ladies!

Re purple shampoo - I no longer use it on my gray hair (salt and pepper with two white/silver streaks in the front). I tried several, but they seemed to leave residue on my hair. But, I want my streaks bright! I found a great website (but lost it, will try to find it again in the future). A clarifying shampoo was recommended periodically to remove any build-up (which can cause brassy or yellow) and also a heat spray (which I wasn't using). My hair gal had warned me about heat on my hair after I went gray. I only used a curling iron to smooth/straighten my bangs a bit. But after reading various articles, etc. on the gray website, I decided to try the clarifying shampoo and started using a heat spray. I spray just a couple of spritzes of the heat spray in my hands and rub through my hair. I use the clarifying shampoo a couple of times a week (I wash every 2-3 days) and other washes I used a shampoo that is conditioning. I really like it. I like what the clarifying shampoo does SO MUCH BETTER than the purple shampo! Plus I don't have purple stains on my hands LOL.

I am pretty sure I will go another 2" shorter -- just removing all the weight in the back/sides gave my hair so much more movement and life. I was ready to go shorter but bailed last minuted and decided I wanted to enjoy "long hair" a little longer.

Oh @Jilly, love your color! It is the perfect level of ash -- it's my holy grail! And how funny that you have the same glasses! Do you have the Tiffany blue stems also?

@Ally De yes, indeed, we sure are twinsies ❤️ for good and bad! I just wish you had been spared my medical issues. If you tell me that you have Factor V Leiden too, I will be convinced that you are my long lost sister!

Regarding products... I can't explain what the John Frieda Blonde does exactly but I notice a difference when I stop using it. I want to say it helped bring out my natural highlights but I can't verify that. I just know it makes a difference.

I use Aveda purple shampoo to tone down the golden or brassy chemical highlights and for that it is quite effective! I don't have enough gray to notice the yellowing/dulling and I don't think I have an issue with build up. I just don't use enough product to get build up and I wash my hair twice and really give my head a scrub. Fine hair is just really a different kind of beast. I use Keratin Ciment Thermique and that is really it. No hair spray. No mousse. It is too long now but when it was shorter, I also used Aveda Volume Tonic.

PS my hands have never turned purple from my shampoo.. nor has my hair had a lavender tint. I don't know if it is the product or because I only use it once a week-- twice at the very most. I do find that it is drying so give my hair a little extra conditioner love.

I am officially done fretting over my hair. As I said, I will very likely take it back to shoulder length at my next appt but I am tired of the Do I/Don't I cut stress. It's healthy now and that's a big bonus. Everything else is just a fleeting style.

@Jinx, I think that is why I didn't go too much shorter-- I was in a hair rut through the 80s, 90s and 2000s. I know once I go shorter that it will remain the same until I stop breathing lol.. so I decided to keep it long for just a little longer. :)

Or maybe I'll cut it when I hit a weight loss milestone-- it is cheaper than a tattoo or a piece of jewelry! 😂

Funky, my hair went short and I said I was never going back -- then a pandemic hit and it was just above my waist in back before I went to collarbone length. It's below my shoulders now and I'm still trying to decide where it will wind up. But I don't think I will say never again -- for fear of tempting fate and another pandemic or other disaster. LOL

Funky, your hair looks good but I for one would like to know how your skin is so youthful!! You don’t look like you could be over 40. Please share your skin care products!

I got a haircut yesterday and told her to give me ”the shortest possible bob” and so far, it feels good. But wanted to share with Virtue users that she said ”your hair seems thicker.” Woohoo! I hadn’t mentioned the shampoo so she had no reason to comment. I told her I was using Virtue and she said she loves that line.

Oh @Sueb20 my skin isn't great, and now I have to fess up that I don't really take care of my skin as I should. I use Pevonia gentle exfoliating skin cleanser a few times a week.. and Pevonia Phyto-Gel cleanser with the clairsonic a few times a week (not on the same days). I am not at all regular with my moisturizer but I need to be-- I use Cerave.

I really do credit the Chanel Teinte Ultra Velvet makeup with the way my face looks. It blurs pores and those wrinkles around my mouth and it evens out my skin tone and gives it a "soft" look. I have some photos from some of my trials with other makeup that do not look nearly as good. (I need to take selfies to get that close up look of the foundations lol). Also, carrying extra pounds helps-- as I lose weight, I see more and more wrinkles and loose skin.

My stylist also commented on my hair and asked if I had changed products -- but she also noted that she thinks the single best thing I have done for my hair is to go from washing daily to every 3 days. When it is shorter, I must wash my fine hair daily-- at least when going out or when going to the office daily. I can look back through my series of selfies and very clearly see how my hair has responded to the Virtue products. The difference is very noticeable.

I'd love to see your "shortest possible bob" .. and too funny, I asked for the "longest possible lob"!

These threads always make me feel awkward because I am pretty ordinary ... and despite all the selfies Ive shared, I really don't like to have my face on display. I appreciate all the kind and generous words ❤️ but I feel .. unworthy. It's not a lack of confidence i think I am just more clear on the reality lol.

I am as lazy with my makeup as my skincare routine-- in both cases, I depend on good products.

BTW I meant to note this earlier, but @Jilly you and Ida could be twinsies! Your photo reminded me so much of Ida's before she cut her hair short! Texas is not my favorite state-- but it sure makes some beautiful women!

@Sueb20 I LOVE it.. my hair doesn't do well with the layers but love the depth it gives your cut. Also love the rich depth you get from your hair color! Gorgeous!

@Jilly I saw a really interesting video on face shapes and hair styles.. basically saying that the best cut for every face shape will fool the eye into seeing more of an oval face shape. It made a lot of sense and explained why some cuts and lengths just dont work for some of us.

Funky, I've never heard the oval face shape thing before but it makes sense now that you say it, because I too look best with a cut that give me an oval face shape.

I can't wear short hair styles either, for 2 reasons - one is that my hair is really frizzy and also very fine - and the shorter it goes the harder it is to control. Long hair gives some weight to it and helps pull it down, otherwise it just wants to go every which way. (Heat protectant spray and flat ironing are all that spare me from scaring small children. Ha.) And the other reason is I just look horrid with short hair - I feel like it turns my head into an A-frame and that's not an attractive look!

I'd love to be able to wear my hair like Sueb20 - just doesn't work for me. Between my face shape and the frizz standing up all over....whoa nelly. I'd look like a toilet scrubbing brush if I went that short. LOL.

LOL @Ally De, I am SURE you do not look like a toilet scrub brush-- but I get what you mean. Face shape, hair texture and health all play a part in the styles that best suit us.

Funky, she made perfect sense to me, and even talked about those of us with lots of volume (or in my case pure frizz 😳 ) - and needing weight to pull it down.

Thanks for finding that. She explained some things I intuitively knew but wouldn't have been able to put into words, i.e., my face shape and hair texture do not lend themselves into a short haircut. It won't work for me no matter how much I wish it would. (She didn't say I'd look like a toilet scrub brush, but the effect is implied. 🤣 )

Thank you, @Teeda -- while only slightly shorter in the front, it is substantially shorter in the back. I went back to a "Lob" cut so the back went from many inches longer than the front to a bit shorter than the front. I think it looks healthier and it has so much more movement.

Funny, a lot of people have said I look like Mariel Hemingway-- but more when I was younger (and she was). When I was away at college, my youngest sister had a photo of Mariel Hemingway on the fridge because it reminded her of me. That said, @mtnrdredux_gw is the who *most* looks like a Hemingway sister-- especially Mariel! I can see some resemblance to young tomboy Mariel but Mtn totally embodies the easy elegance of adult Mariel Plus she has the same eyes and beautiful smile!
