Monstera question - house plant

Hi all,

a few questions on my monstera- thx for your help in advnace. 3.5-4 years old. 1. how come im seeing some browning at the edge of the one leaf? too much direct sun or a watering issue? 2. any reason only one of the leaves split @ maturity? 3. most recent new growth seems very tiny. any explanation? thx!

cut the affected leaf off and water properly.. so it doesnt happen again...

The most common causes for necrosis at leaf tips and margins is over-watering, a high level of dissolved solids (salts) in the soil, or a combination of both. There isn't enough information, so far, to allow a meaningful conclusion as to what the cause might be.

It is not at all unusual for various factors that cause stress in plants to cause reversion to a juvenile state. As a bonsai practitioner, I see examples of these reversions frequently. In some cases, plants that have grown to sexual maturity (identifiable because they have bloomed) revert and stop blooming until the stress factor has been alleviated; but more commonly, it's seen in plants that revert from mature to juvenile foliage types. Aggressive repotting after long periods of root congestion, fertilizing with excessive amounts of nitrogen, and heavy pruning, are 3 factors I have to avoid when my trees are reaching a stage where reversion would represent a significant setback in eye appeal. You're lucky in the sense that the reversion you're seeing doesn't detract much from the plant's appearance, if at all.

Do you fully repot your plant (includes bare-rooting, root pruning, change of grow medium) or pot up at intervals? When last and which did you do? What type of grow medium do you use? How do you determine when it's time to water? Does the pot have a drain hole? Is there a collection saucer beneath the pot, or, do you use a cache pot, and do you allow the pot to sit in the water that collects in the saucer or cache pot? What do you use for fertilizer and how often do you fertilize? when last?

On my monsteras I allow the roots to climb other plants and structures for support like they would in a natural environment. My largest M. deliciosa has wedged itself behind the electrical work and grown clear into the soil below the bench as well. I also have other specimens which I put at the bottom of Rubber trees and the vines grow like crazy. Some people build spanish moss towers to train the roots, but I find them interesting so I leave them visable. I doubt it would hurt it to cut them off, and I know that in low humidity conditions the roots will die back if they don't come in contact with soil. Peace, Nate

Alright, well if it's a smaller variety then probably a hanging basket wouldn't be a bad idea, but I personally have a love for upright plants. Out of 60 or so plants only 5 are hanging. But whichever you choose I'd still suggest at least misting the aerial roots (and the rest of the plant of course) so that moisture reaches the whole plant somewhat easily, especially if your house can get pretty dry. Perhaps when the plant gets larger misting a weak fertilizer solution on the aerial roots as well may help. I so wish that one of the stores here would decide to stock a Monstera some time in the near future. They're such neat plants. Good luck.

There's near 50 species of Monstera, the most commonly cultivared one being M. deliciosa. And that's the one with the fruit that's eaten. The "Swiss Cheese Plant" name comes from the holes in the leaves. Also called Fruit Salad Plant because the fruit tastes like fruit salad. The fruit starts to ripen at one end and slowly proceeds to the other end. So you can't eat it at once but have to eat it progressively and keep putting it back in the fridge. The taste is like a tropical fruit salad, very nice but difficult to deal with because of the way it ripens. That said, your photo doesn't look like M. deliciosa. Looks more like Philodendron bipinnatifidum (sometimes still sold under the obsolete name P. selloum). I've never heard of them being edible. Being a Philodendron they're more likely to be toxic. If you do get some M. deliciosa fruit give it a try. The fruit is elongated and covered in green scale-like plates (small plates of course). When the flesh underneath ripens the scales become loose and fall off. Don't eat the flesh under scales that aren't loose.

Question on Variegated Monstera

Mine in not variegated but I see a distinct seasonal difference in its growth. Outside, in real heat and humidity (day and night), it grows fast. Mine get quite a bit of sun in the growing season, but are protected from the hottest sun. In the Winter, I have to bring it indoors and really don't want it to grow (as the reduced light results in spindly growth and leaves that are not divided. As has been suggested above, variegated plants can be less robust, especially if they are not getting enough sun.
