Another Mystery striped rose - need ID
Comments (27)Thanks for the additional problem solving, Beth! I used to have Gypsy Fire from Eurodesert but it wasn't particularly hardy in my zone and has been long gone. As tough as this little plant has been for 4+ years I don't think I realized reading my notes that I can't guarantee this rose was a free RV rose however, since I don't remember what I planted there. I appreciate the advice to ask RV, but while I love their roses dearly I don't find that the folks answering the phones or emails are typically all that knowledgeable about the roses. This spring they sent me Ingrid Bergman (a dark red rose) instead of the Ingrid that I'd ordered (orange with yellow hilites Mander rose), and it took some discussion to convince them these weren't the same rose. They did give me the credit for the error, but I don't think distinguishing among possible striped roses would be likely from the staff I've encountered. Theoretically Ebharvey may be correct that this could be a seedling, but I've never had any other seedling grow in my yard in 10 or more years and 1000+ roses, so it would be odd if the only seedling I got was a nice striped one like this. Far more likely given the planting frenzy that happens in my yard in spring is that I planted this and forgot to label it some years ago. I remember trying to replace Gypsy Fire from someone but that was unsuccessful, and I wouldn't have put it in an out of the way place like this. I don't recall ever ordering JH Pierneef, but given your lovely photos I certainly would if the opportunity presented itself. I seem to recall the color being on the crimson side of red rather than orange tones, but the photo you see from back in (gasp) 2014 was the last bloom picture I have and the last bloom I remember seeing. Well, I suppose if it doesn't bloom I can call it Cynthia's Darling (or whatever I want) and no one will be able to contradict me. It's unobtrusive and stays tucked in some clematis most of the season so it stays by default. Still, it is a nagging little mystery that surprisingly after 3 years still isn't resolved. I'll keep a special eye out for it this season and see if I get any new blooms. Thanks as always for the problem solving! Cynthia...See MoreQuestion on Plum Perfect Rose
Comments (26)In N. America we have some Kordes bred roses we introduce that Kordes does not introduce in Europe for various reason - examples Plum Perfect, Savannah, South Africa, Lemon Fizz Kolorscape. That is not to say they are not really great roses. Someday Kordes may introduce them. Plum Perfect has been introduced in S. Africa and Australia under the name Novalis. A lot of consideration goes into an introduction that is not to say it is not a good rose including regional tastes, what is already introduced in the same color range, climate, cold hardiness, disease resistance and so on. Plum Perfect is one of the most floriferous roses I have in trial. It is not a big bush - it is now reaching 3 tall' x 3.5' wide in my home garden after 3 years planted from an own root band pot. It is a vigorous rose in my Zone 8 - just compact. In colder climates I wonder if it will get big enough, but quite a few of the trial sites have also been happy with the flower production and the relatively compact size of this rose. It is one of the last roses still in bloom in my garden and was blooming this past December. I rate it among my favorites just for the bloom power. It has one bloom open today, but I will shoot an image for you tomorrow so you can see what I mean about compact, but vigorous....See MorePoseidon & Plum Perfect Roses
Comments (47)I gave that one to my mom, but I've seen it a couple times this year. I really like the color. It was perfectly healthy this year and we've had a ton of rain this year near Cincinnati. I think I just heard that it was the wettest July on record. I know it's difficult to draw conclusions on a 1st year plant (especially one growing in someone else's yard), but I like what I see so far. From what I've read, the hot and humid isn't a problem for Plum Perfect. However, there was some uncertainty on winter hardiness due to it being a new introduction though. Comments (10)Get both if you have room. They are diff colors for sure. My PP bloomed much better but I've had it a little longer than VP. If I had to pick one I'd go with PP bc I don't have any other roses that color and they last forever on the bush and in a vase. Love love love it. I'm sure I will love VP (don't remember it having any pink in it but didn't bloom much) but this girl was blown away with PP. I've deleted so many of my pics but will see if I have any still. Go on now and order it. Go go go. NOW!!! NOW!!! NOW!!! Edit : Ok I think this is a pic of PP. It's hard for me to be confident of a pic from last year. Do you have Poseidon? I came across the bouquet of Poseidon looking for PP...See MoreDesert Rose (10a Sunset 19)
