Lab coat .......

Asking for suggestions please for a brand name dog coat for Clementine. I don't want the most expensive one around because she is growing quickly, she is about 6 months. But I don't want a cheapie that will fall apart when washed. Something that will fit and stay on.

Why do you think the dog needs a "coat"? Other than small dogs in extremely cold weather, most do just fine with what they have as standard equipment.

There is also the alternative of making your own clothes, which I used to do much more than I do now. I would sometimes find linen with yarns that had a certain twist to them that would help in wrinkle reduction, and I would always pre-shrink the linen before making any garments with it, so that they would be washable. I made linen clothes for my mother as well, and I designed them so that they would be easy to iron, although really if she hung them up immediately from the wash and let them drip dry, they would not need ironing. She tried to get me to make her clothes out of polyester, but I refused. I made her several silk blouses instead, which of course had to be dry cleaned. I made my brother silk and linen suits, but those had to be dry cleaned as well, since the jackets and vests were lined. What am I doing wrong with my new Miele w1986 washer?

I have a 220 volt Miele 1926a washer which sounds similar to yours (no honeycomb drum, etc.) We've been using ours for many years with none of the issues you are reporting. We've washed literally tons of clothes in our Miele, and haven't had any of the fraying or holes that you write about. We've got kids shirts and pants that have been through 3 different kids now, so if our washer was destroying them, they wouldn't have lasted this long. Are there any strange noises coming from the machine? Have you felt the drum to see if there are any sharp or broken parts? We've noticed that our front loader seems to cause less wear on our clothing than our previous top-loading agitator model. Your experience is puzzling to say the least. For wrinkling, I've found that the amount of time spent in the dryer has more effect on wrinkles than anything the washer does. Try drying for a longer time on lower heat. For cleaning issues, try changing detergents. I don't have any experience with BioKleen, but have had good results with Persil, Sears HE powder, and Costco (Kirkland Signature) Environmentally Friendly liquid. As for the rust stain, could it be a plumbing issue? How old is your home?

The only info I've been able to find is that it would disqualify him from showing if he's not solid black. Any combo of colours is a disqualification, but I don't think it neccesarily means he isn't pure-bred. Another thing I would consider, is that chocolate labs range from very dark brown, to a lighter brown..maybe you've been douped and you have a chocolate lab with shading variations?? I also found an article that said ocassionaly breeding two black labs will result in chocolate or yellow labs, they're not always guaranteed to produce black puppies. So that may be a possibility in your case. Hopefully someone with better knowledge than a few internet searches, can help you out a little more. I thought I adopted a pure black cat, but she's actually orange and brown in the light! Looks can be decieving somtimes :)

Dr. office decor and psychological effect

Dianalo, I beg to differ. I did not judge a doctor to be "less competent" because of his office decor. We were ~then~ talking about how office decor can have a psychological effect on people. I said that with this opthamologist, the decor was so depressing and uncomfortable to myself and my daughter that I decided to look elsewhere. Our long-time family eye doc had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly and I was looking for a new one to take my family to. There are many equally good eye docs in our city; my goal was to find one that was not only a good physician, but that I thought we would enjoy for the long-term. I don't need or seek out high-end or fancy offices, but I do appreciate comfortable ones. This can be achieved with a little or a lot of money as long as they put some thought into it and make their patients' comfort a priority. You have to also keep in mind that physicians and dentists are like everyone else, some really enjoy creating a great atmosphere for their patients,their staff and themselves just as we here enjoy creating a great atmosphere in our homes and our workplaces for our family, our friends and ourselves. Some don't and that's ok, too, as long as it's clean and comfortable. But . . . you give me the choice between a few equally good, well-qualified physicians with a pleasant, caring bedside manners and who all have good staffs and I'll pick the doc whose office I feel is the most welcoming and comfortable. But, an office that is thoroughly depressing and uncomfortable to me, as this eye doc's was, with the wood everywhere that actually gave me a sliver touching the wall; with dim, gloomy (seriously) lighting; with a lack of enough light to read by; with uncomfortable no-armed plastic chairs, lined up one next to the other so that I was bumping elbows with the person sitting next to me; with too few end tables to give you space between the people and to hold reading lamps; with hardly any magazines and the ones there were old and looked ratty; with a patient bathroom separated from the waiting room only by a thin door that was right between two of the chairs . . . and let's just say that sound carried very well out there, I couldn't help but think that this guy was not very concerned about his patient's comfort! Was this guy a good doc? Yes, but as I have already stated, there are many other equally good docs in town. And his prices were no lower than the rest. BTW, he dressed very well and was a pleasant person. I didn't judge him by his clothes, his shoes, or that he didn't spend a lot of money with his decor. That is not the issue; lack of patient comfort and apparent unconcern for his patients' comfort was the issue. It was my call to make and that was my (very detailed) criteria for making it (LOL!). Now, let us get back to how different interior decor in medical/dental offices can have a psychological effect on people.I find it a very interesting topic! Lynn

Wouldn't you look up any dog coat and then base it on weight, build, etc?

Labs need a coat? They were bred for cold weather and water and have an undercoat that keeps them warm. I've only ever seen dog coats on small dogs or very short haired dogs that weren't built for being outdoors.

If you feel the need, look at used ones. My sister recently got a new puppy and purchased a bunch of temporary puppy supplies - collar, car seat., harness - at Goodwill. He has already grown out of several of these items and they just get recycled back to Goodwill when they no longer fit. Most larger Goodwill stores have a pretty complete pet section.

I had a sweater and a fleece jacket for my recently departed Cocker to wear in winter after a grooming session left him with a sheared 'fur' coat :-) He felt the cold!! They both got washed multiple times and held up just fine. Sweater came from PetsMart; coat came from Chewy.

When I saw the title I thought it was for a medical lab coat and thought "Oh wow the fashion mavens are going to have their work cut out for this one."

But I got nothing for this one.

We have an English Lab and the cold doesn't bother her at all. Even as a puppy she loved going out to play and eat snow or would walk across our mesh pool cover to drink the cold water. She was 4 to 7 months of age during her first winter in the Philadelphia area and we never thought about a coat.

The only issue she had was her first winter when she still had soft puppy paws. If the weather was really brittle (perhaps in the 20's) and the snow became icyy then we'd keep an eye on her so that she didn't get little ice balls between the pads.

Even now as an adult if we go for a walk she'll head for the nearest puddle and walk in it.

Your dog's ancestors were bred in Britain from dogs that originated in Canada. They were retrievers and spent their working lives jumping into English lakes in the depths of winter. I should think she would never live it down amongst other labs if you put her in a coat.

I say it deprnds. i agree that for the mist part labs don’t need coats. But, i find sith my pit/ mix mix, when its in the 20’s I like to to use his fleece and/ or puffer.

I do think a raincoat could be useful for dogs that din’t mind long walks in the rain..

Big dogs don't need a coat for warmth the way small dogs might. If you're concerned about rain and Clementine coming in all wet, you could keep a stack of towels near the door. That's what we do for our dogs. The rain stays on their outer coat so it's easy to towel them essentially dry.

I am also curious about the need for Clementine to have a coat?

If you're going to do it make sure that the coat doesn't chafe on Clementine's skin. It can lead to problems.

If she needs a coat to be a guide dog or something like that I would go to a professional shop and get it sized correctly.

Because dogs can't sweat, I would think the risks of getting overheated would be greater than those of being too cold. I agree about keeping an eye on their paws, both in winter for ice balls and on hot black asphalt in the summer so their pads don't get burned.
