Dark Walnut Stained Floors with Autumn Stained Doors + Cabinets?
Comments (2)Here are some pictures of my Kitchen, Stairs, and Powder Room. What I need to find out is if people think Dark Walnut Floors will go well with the cabinets and doors. Also since I am putting up white trim and casing should I paint the windows white. I'm finding mixed advice on painting over stain. Some people say oil and some say latex paint. I'd rather go with latex if possible, but I think the stain was oil based. Kitchen -- Thinking about going with dark walnut floors, backsplash (Maybe Seafoam Green Tiles) and possibly change the Flint Corian Countertops for Granite. From HouseRemodel Stairs -- Thinking about taking out wooden balusters and replace with wrought iron. Maybe the basket design. From HouseRemodel Powder Room -- Would like to change out the mirror and maybe vanity. I might try and put some glass inserts in the doors first, before scrapping the current vanity. Comments (4)If your kitchen is bright I'm sure you could get away with all walnut. How much direct sun does it get? It also depends a bit on how many upper cabinets you are doing. If you have lots and lots of uppers you really may want to consider white, glass or just open shelves. Just my opinion, but I find loads of upper cabinets in wood or dark paint a bit oppressive. But it totally depends on lighting, kitchen layout, whether you are going for a modern or traditional look, etc. Also keep in mind that natural walnut (not a walnut stain) really isn't very dark - I call it a medium brown. And walnut lightens with time. It will never be a light as maple of course, but it really isn't a "dark" dark wood. I have walnut lowers and just two white uppers plus a white pantry wall. My kitchen has low to medium light with some (not much) direct light at certain times of day. I thought all walnut would be a bit much....See MoreWalnut upper cabinets
Comments (8)Coopersmom - My kitchen is a similar size with 9 foot ceiling and the thought of using a dark wood all the way up made me worry about too much darkness (especially because I face north.) That said there are many all dark wood kitchens that I love - in some configurations it can really work. Some frame the top with wall color (versus going all the way up), others only have a single full wall of walnut (no counter, gorgeous) then have windows on the uppers or glass in other areas. The walnut is such a fantastic grain, that honestly it might be a shame to not have some uppers or full length cabinets. I don't think of the glass cabinets as switching the colors. I see glass uppers as a lightening, almost like a window. You cold also do some thoughtful combination of wood uppers and glass uppers. For a contemporary look I really like the brushed metal with glass uppers (see the first photo below.) These glass and metal uppers are horizontal which can be very contemporary, but you can also do vertical for something that leans more traditional. Here is an example of wood framed glass uppers, not walnut but you get the idea of the look. Lastly, here is an example of walnut uppers framed with a lovely green wall paint. It is not a never ending wall of cabinets, which I think is why it works. This was something I didn't have the vision for (but do now :), but I think is outstanding. I think you have a lot of flexibility with having an entire length south facing with windows and believe you could have a beautiful kitchen with walnut or glass uppers. Not to bore you with my kitchen (still a work in progress :), but I was struggling with wood uppers and bottoms and similar size constraints. I used windows and glass uppers to try and lighten up the look. I can imagine all windows where I have glass uppers - again you could do walnut or glass on the other wall(s). I used red birch and painted cabinets to keep the north facing kitchen light (and I love natural grained wood, all of them.) My kitchen Another I hope this helps....See MoreUnder cabinet lighting diffuser/lens identification help
Comments (1)Hello I‘m replacing my backsplash and in doing so had to remove my under cabinet lightening. In removing it I accidentally shattered the diffuser/ lens cover which was (obviously) glass and clear with a slight texture on one side. my issue is that I bought the house with these lights and there’s no name or model number on them for me to find what this part might be called or where to buy one. There’s mental on the ends and they can swing down to expose the small bulbs in the light. Does any one know where I might be able to buy a replacement part? Thank you!!...See Moreelcieg
