help choosing a greige(ish) paint color?

We have turned our basement into a "studio apartment" for myself (my mother uses the 1st floor master) and I absolutely love it down here. It's cozy with only a little light coming from the door that I covered in privacy film. This is my preference, I've always drawn the blinds in my other homes. During the day, I have lots of light from the 8 LED puck lights and at night I can dim them for extra coziness.

Anyway, that's the background, lol. Currently, it as all painted in the crappy builder grade flat paint that Ryan Homes uses in City Loft. I actually like the color but wanted to darken it up just a wee bit. I'm also painting the wall behind my sectional a custom color to match my console which is a blue color.

I thought I wanted Drift of Mist (and purchased a Samplize) but the reviews of it say it has greenish undertones. I went down the rabbit hole trying to find something similar by SW (painter only uses SW) and now I'm overwhelmed. Any recommendations so I can place another Samplize order? I don't really see the undertones in any of the shades I've looked at so I'm stumped.

And yes, the mirror will be lowered after painting, the handyman we hired through Handy was awful. It's also off center but it is centered to the TV so still debating what to do about that but I think I'm just going to lower it a touch. I have shelves to hang after painting on the other wall. Once they're up, I will decide if I need sconces or something on the sides of the mirror. Not the topic but any suggestions there are also appreciated.

TIA!

My painter only uses SW paint. I could take in the sample and color match it if I found . color that would work but according to the reviews, this one has purple undertones. It is lovely though!

I guess your post yesterday didn’t turn out any paint colors. You posted no pictures yesterday, so I understand why responses were vague, although good ones. You bedroom/bath is pretty blah…I see no accent color at all. Paint the wall a rich gray blue…and the vanity white. The mirrors …they just doesn’t make it with the white window next to it…in the same shape... Replace with two different mirrors. Normally, you have the same mirror over each sink, but you can’t do that. Something simple, oval, the finish of the faucet. If you really need that other mirror choose something out of the ordinary, If you din’t need a mirror a great canvas would brighten the space up.

Thank you...i'll take a look at that one! I have so many samples now i think I've just over thought it too much!! House faces southwest, and have lots of large windows with it being a early 1900s home, tall ceilings, and I use mostly lamp light, not a big fan of overhead lighting as a primary source. Currently every room is painted a different color even though they are all open to one another, and I crave a blank slate to let colors in my artwork and textiles take focus.

We used analytical gray which is pretty warm although it does look different at various times of the day and in shade vs direct sun. If it’s any comfort, picking our exterior color was super difficult.

If you get a tester of Vale Mist and see how it looks with all of your finishes, but decide you want something a bit grayer or lighter or bluer or any - er we can help you get to similar colors that hit the nail on the head. I have not used Vale Mist before, but have used October Mist - just a shade darker and loved it.

I've used this in client homes a number of times. It's not purple at all.

Several reviews say that it has violet-pink undertones. I'll order the sample but I never see the undertones that other people do. I just don't want anyone that can see those things coming over and seeinf purple or green undertones down here, lol.

Good lighting will make a difference. Given that most of your furniture is gray/blue, I can't imagine there would be pinkish reflections. But skip the reviews and get samples. Have your painter do brush outs for you on the wall or on large white cards so you can see for yourself in your space.

Agreeable Gray is probably the most popular color SW has that is greige but leans gray. One of my relatives painted her whole house with it. It looks very neutral. Of course everything depends on your light.

Please don't use greige. That would be so dull in that room. Look at SW Sea Salt LRV 64 or SW Fleur de Sel LRV 72. Warm blue/grays. As an alternate consider leaving the walls as is and your accent wall in the Sea Salt.

Move the kitty perch and replace it with a plant on a stand (or a hanging plant) and hang the mirror vertically there to reflect the plant and the light from the door. Place a nice big painting on your accent wall.

Agreeable Gray can be lovely but test with your lighting. It was used in this room with lots of light.

This comparison of BM whites may help you visualize the undertones.

I see you plan to oaint the wall behind the sectional a color similar to your console. i like the idea, eslecially with your rug, and am wondering if you know the name of the paint color. If so, you can go on the SW site (if it a SW color) and see the suggested coordinating colors which might work on the other walls. I hope you let us know how it works out! Your space is very pretty, and you are so considerate to give yiur mom use of the master bedroom on the first floor.

Youe deep blue accent wall is gonna be spectacular, better that the paler color I mentioned now that I think about it. Especially with the pale gray sofa.

Jennifer, thank you for such a detailed explanation! I never would have thought my sectional was taupe but it does look a lot like that paint color. I added Modern Grey to my cart to test!

billbyer2442, The sectional is from Macy's, the Rhyder collection in Parallel Dove.

LP, I actually took the door off of the console and had them color match it. The closest color they had was sea serpent but that was a touch too dark and had a green hue (at least to my eye).

I mentioned my mom upstairs because even my friends ask why I chose to live in the basement. There's a whole upper level that I could have moved into but I like the lack of windows, lol. I'm a prefectly happy cave dweller! My mom's room is gorgeous but I'm really only jealous of her much larger bathroom. She has 3 windows in her bedroom and one in her bathroom, that's just too much light for me. So not really generous of me, I prefer it down here. It's just a bonus that she won't have to go up and down stairs.

We have drift of mist throughout our house. I love the color. But I think it's pretty close to city loft so I'm not sure you'd find enough contrast.

Often you won't see the undertones until it's covering your walls so sometimes it's just a leap of faith.

I also think they're both very similar, too similar, and a touch darker would be my preference.

I can't stop thiinking about this room lol. Don't you think the accent wall should stand alone? You said you like the white and some of us agree. Others are answering your question about which greige. I'm afraid a color would look cluttered in this room.

The way the walls and ceiling and trim and soffet angles blend together in the same color and with that flat finish is like infinity. Why call attention to them when the focus is the depth of that deep blue?

tracefloyd, I'm definitely not a designer nor do I have a falir for decorating. I like the City Loft well enough but I think I'd like it better just a bit darker. I don't mean a lot darker, just a little. I just booked a color consultation with SW for Thursday and will see what they think. I may end up sticking with the Drift of Mist idea or cutting a color a bit to lighten it a smidge. Honestly, I'm overwhelmed with all the options, especially with so many being so close to the others.

I get what you're saying about the accent wall but I'll really only see it from my bed and even then, not for long. I don't lay in bed with the light on and I'm usually up before the sun comes up but my hope was it'll tie in the bathroom better because I'm also painting my bathroom that blue color. Pic of bedroom area for reference.

Oh wow, I didn't know there was more to the apartment! Nice. As long you're painting then go with one of the warm blue/grays I mentioned. No greige, not on my watch lol. I'd be interested to see what your consultant says while actually being in the space.

Btw, that bedroom is perfect for sleeping in yet you're up before dawn lol? I get it, at my age I can hardly ever sleep in anymore. Even if I'm up late. Why does that happen? So annoying...but I do enjoy the sunrises now. :-)

The carpet will be changed when we've been here a year to match the LVP upstairs. Anything that pulls too gray I don't think I'd like too much. It's an online color consultation but I have all the pics ready to send over to give them a full picture of what the space looks like.

The only reason I would paint Drift of Mist over City Loft is if City Loft felt just a bit too pink or was hinting pink in my space. If City Loft feels neutral, Drift of Mist will lean a little more green. The difference in how dark/light the two colors are isn't enough to be discernable. It won't look like you painted a darker color.

Here are renderings with each of the three colors Drift of Mist, City Loft and Modern Gray

Here is the same room with modern gray walls and either City Loft or Drift of Mist on the fireplace, bookshelves and trim.

They moved my consultation up to today and I'm even more confused, lol. Her recommendations were agreeable gray (which seems very beige to me), gossamer veil (which looks nearly identical to AG to me, Repose Gray (which seems a touch too dark), or North Star (and I'm not sure how I feel about bluish gray, if that will seem too cool). Grrrr, more amples to order.

Gossamer Veil is on the same strip as drift of mist. It's a warm gray, just darker than DOM. The model home in our development was painted in gossamer veil. https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=F5SSeTBA8Wa It's a very pretty color.

I think of the 4 she recommended, I like that one the best but I may sample North Star too just to see how I feel about a completely different look.

I don't know how I missed your picture of your bedroom. Gorgeous! I don't know that you can find a color that is nicer with your furniture and bedding than what is currently on the walls. If your intent on painting it something almost the same but just a bit darker why don't you go into SW and ask them to make you two samples, one of City Loft at 10% darker and one of City Loft at 25% darker?

Take them home, paint some sample sheets and see which one you like better.

If your not afraid of math you could get City Loft and City Loft at 25% darker and mix your own samples using a syringe to measure out the color until you got the perfect color.

You can then alter the formula to fit or just take your sample back and have them do a computer color match. Always test the match by taking the sample and the matched color outside in direct sunlight and comparing the two.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me to do that since I know they can cut it to make it lighter. Off to SW I go tomorrow to try this out! Thank you so much!

You really do have a good eye for color. What you have done with the bedroom and living room is beautiful.

Most people don't see orange and blue with taupe, because they think of the pink/purple undertones in the taupe, but when you want mix paint to make taupe you take an orange hue and add blue to make it grayer (mix the complements). When I looked at your living room and saw the orange and the blue grays I was wowed! You hit the nail on the head.

I think you've just gone down a rabbit hole looking at colors and lost confidence. Breathe. You can do this.

    Nicole Wilson thanked Jennifer Hogan

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence! I'm going to try out your suggestion with the City Loft and see how it goes!

For anyone that may be following....I went with Gossamer Veil cut by 10%. It's just that teeny bit darker that I was hoping for. I don't know how noticeable it is on the screen but I can tell the difference and it's exactly what I was wanting, a very subtle change.

Unfortunately, I wasn't home the first day and had forgotten to tell the painter to remove the brackets from the wall and fill and sand the holes so I could have the mirror hung lower so the only thing I could do was move the brackets on the mirror up to the very top which only moved the mirror and inch lower. Pretty irrritated at myself over that.

Still looking for recommendations for sconces (nothing hardwired or that needs to be plugged in) for the sides of the mirror. I have shelving going on the other wall. And le sigh, I can't figure out my pillow game at all 😭
