For those of you with a decorator's eye...do these colors clash?
Comments (11)Okay I will burden you with the details. Thank you so much for helping. The house is a 150+ year old Cape with most of the old previously renovated out unfortunately. I feel that we should remain faithful to the age and style of the house itself but I can go nuts with my new-found change in style. You'll see the original moulding around the window in the living room picture which had been around three of the seven total windows in the room. We had moulding custom made for the remainder and for around the doors which enter into the room. Looking at the mess in the dining room (wallpapering complete!) you can see that I have a crazy mix of styles going on. I've got my former neighbor's dining room set--I'm actively storing it for her--my mother's antique dishes (the blue on white Chelsea-ware is over 300 years old and passed down to the oldest daughter) and cranberry glass, the floors are stained very dark and you can see that picked up the in ottoman/table and legs of couch. I'm represented in those dark floors, couch and tables, the crystal lamp you might be able to see on the floor in the dining room picture, the whacky IKEA chandelier, those JC Penney grommet top drapes on brushed steel rods--they don't carry them anymore so I can't link them--they are textured, mossy or dark avocado green with appliques circles on them in varying colors which can read yellow/gold/bronze, the cheapo area rug, the fig tree--there are many plants in the room--it's got southern, western and northern exposure--great light, the stool the plant's on is a decrepit relic from years ago in the kitchen. I'm also thrilled with the iron work rectangles art on the wall above the tv and yes, I even like the shiny green paint and steel handles I put on the credenza! The couch and love seat fabric is nubbly and multi-toned, the color is putty. In the dining area I'm responsible for those bright green chairs and they belly up to the table with the others (please note the fabric I chose to recover the seats with!). There's a blue chair at the computer area which you can't see and other blue elements not in the photos. If I could ditch everything and start again I'd probably be in a mid-century modern type phase. I adore the way Candice Olson designs. I don't want white, it reads too cold in this room--the dining room walls were white before the wallpaper. I want saturated color and the right gray could work--what is the right gray though? I thought the rug would pull in the ivoire--the blonde probably is too yellow. I'm bad bad bad with choosing color. After much deliberation I'd choose a BM color and bring home the little pot and HATE it. I gave up and went with the ivoire I saw at work (entryway and stairs) (love it) and just thought the blonde would work; I'd seen them in entire rooms and they were good. Seeing the wallpaper finally going up I had the funny feeling that those colors really wouldn't work and in you all come to help me. Thank you!...See MoreDoes Anyone Have Eclectic/Unusual Master Bedrooms?
Comments (61)lavender, I'm in the process of redoing my bedroom to some extent, although I don't dare ask my husband to repaint. But I am getting new bedding in a few days and then curtains and pillows for the bed, and perhaps an area rug to put at the foot of the bed. I'll be needing lots of advice soon! edible, I like your bedroom and bedding as they are in the picture; all the colors go so well together. Would love to see the new version too, though. I have a hard time putting together different colors and pattern, and from what I can see here I'm the only one with that problem. At least I know who to go to for advice. jakabedy, your style is interesting in that it's very strong and geometric, but the bed also has a somewhat feminine vibe. It's one of the more unique bedrooms here, but I wish we could also see the master bedroom....See MoreVictorian colonial eclectic contemporaneus
Comments (15)oh I didn't realize you don't have a kitchen yet..you have a basis to install the kitchen. That's pretty close to my first apartment in Europe..we did have the sink cabinet though..a very basic one I do love the website you've shown. I do love their use of tiles too..but then I'm a crazy tile person, so just know that every time I love tiles:) and of course it'd make sense to start with the kitchen..lets face it one needs where to cook, where to bathe, where to eat, and where to sleep..(a mattress)..the rest, can take years..:) also kitchen should go with the house..while it's ok to contradict the house a bit with furnishings, and especially art and lights..kitchen is more permanent, and is perceived as such. And it can give you wonderful clues as to the rest of the space, while you plan it. 25 square meter is not very small..even though my perception started being all skewed, after years of living in US..)) I think-several well chosen pieces, comfortable, thought out well, will work better even if they're bigger...than many smaller pieces that never seem enough, and just add to a feeling of cluttered space so no, shouldn't be pompous..I like the direction you're going into.. another website.well Etsy it's huge, thousand stores..I gave link to one of them only since I really love them and also was easier for me to dig out the link..but look at all the website..eBay-look at everything..(I remember this store.. https://www.ebay.com/sch/pn.design/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from= this one https://www.ebay.com/sch/Mid-Century-Modernism/69473/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=antique-design-cologne&_sac=1.. just search by what you're interested in..try to narrow it down..say I looked for "Murano chandelier" or "Mid Century modern semi flush mount light" as an example.. couple of my other Italian lights come from eBay(I have also lights from France, Switzerland, Germany..and they cost me less than whatever I'd find here affordable...much less even with shipping that I had to pay..and the quality was so much more superior, since they plainly made things better back then) now, 1stDibs has e v e r y t h i n g ..the most beautiful things in the world, and it's international too..the prices though..ugh..inspirational)) but you can check them out..see what they have in your vicinity..shops, galleries..one can absolutely make offers there..it's not for new things but one can find every style there including modern and contemporary..everything under the Sun. if not for buying, look at it for inspiration.. https://www.1stdibs.com/ ah..and have you checked your own Aran Cuisine? sorry don't know your prices or your budget..but Italian kitchens and furnishings are very highly valued both in Europe and the US..I used to love your Natuzzi, for leather sofas..still have a couple armchairs, twenty years after..:) ok so Aran: http://www.arancucine.it/en/ let us know what you think..? you're lucky to live in a place that should be so rich with everything design and decor related..we're lucky to have an internet thus buy from your sellers..;)...See MorePlease Help Choose a Rug for Eclectic Basement Rec Room
Comments (21)Well the green rug arrived and we unwrapped it and put it in place today, and.... Sigh... I'm not in love with it. I'm trying to love it, but it's just okay. It's darker and drabber than it appeared in the listing photos, and is not as soft as I had hoped. I've ordered rugs online before and usually been pleased with the quality, but this one is a reproduction antique (which I realized after ordering it) and seems to be lacking in quality. It's not awful, it's just kind of blah. My husband feels the same way... He doesn't dislike it but doesn't love it either. I like that it's monochromatic and has a subtle pattern, but don't like that it looks kind of heavy and dark in the space. If the quality/feel were better I might be able to get over the color being darker than I'd hoped, and if it was super cheap I'd probably just make do. But it is returnable, and as much as I dread the idea of repackaging an almost 10x13 rug to send back I'm kind of leaning toward returning it. I guess I'll sleep on it, but would love your honest opinions. I think it might look better in the pictures than it does in real life. Here's the runner in the adjoining hallway that has a similar green in it. If I return this one, I'm not even sure what to look for color-wise. As much as I love green, it feels like too much in a large rug. I would love to find a neutral-ish wool rug that's soft and not difficult to clean. We have an Oriental Weavers wool rug in my husband's office that used to be in our living room that has stood up to a lot of abuse over the years from pets, so I'm open to non-antique rugs too. If anyone has any suggestions for brands or places to look, please let me know. Or maybe I should just look locally as now I'm nervous to order another large rug online....See MoreRelated Professionals
