Looking for inspiration on what to plant in these Veradek planters

I have no idea what was going on in my mind when I purchased these planters. Now I have 4 of these planters and not sure what I can plant in them.

Would love some inspiration and ideas. Please share your suggestions. Thank you guys.

PS: I am in Northern Califronia Bay Area / Zone 9B

I have the same planters and have lantana (pink/yellow) in mine. I used to live in CA (SF Bay area) but now live in Maine 5B. I do have to replant every spring but I love how they look. Grasses would look nice as well.

My tip will be to fill the bottom half of the planter with a "filler". I have used many things in the past, but now I use pool noodles. You can easily cut them to size and they are cheap at the dollar store.

The coleus would outgrow that planter in about 2 weeks in your zone. Since it is only four inches deep, you really ought to look at the sedums. You could get away with one trailing and one more upright one and then one in the middle range level. Or perhaps some thyme? There is the nice creeping thyme and then more upright ones. Just think in groups of three's. More pleasing to the eye that way. I've seen the "stepables" plants at many garden centers. They are usually drought tolerant and would work. And a lot of those plants often come in 2" pots, so that should work. Good luck! Here is a link that might be useful: Stepables

Once AGAIN Al, Thanks for the advice. That sounds like it would be easier. It seems someone else had tried to grow something in it, but it appears to not of turned out to well due to seeing the left behind stuff in it. I love the idea of finding different and neat things to use as planters. And after looking through this site and seeing pictures of yours and others i was inspired to visit garage sales, and thrift stores in hopes of finding random odds and ends to use as planters. How do you decided what will work and what wont?? I know drainiage is a main thing. But i seen a catcus of al's i believe that was in this round jar that i dont think it had holes in the bottom (i found a slightly larger and different color jar that was like in a picture and it does not have darin holes and its cermatic) but a catcus was planted in it so thats why i was thinking catcus of some sort, but i do have a small jade plant i was thinking of trying to take a leave and start it. I might try that out with this planter maybe instead of buying more plants right now. My adventure starts tomorrow. I have found all the things that will work to make the 5-1-1 mix and i am starting tomorrow to start the sifting of materials to try and make a batch :) i have a couple different things i am going to try and use for a screen. I think that might be the only thing i am unsure of at this time, but i guess i wont learn unless i try it :) Thanks all for the help and suggestions as i am just learning but willing to try some things to see what happens. Its definalty a learning curve :)

I've posted mine before, but here it is again. I definitely suggest hen & chicks or sedum that can really take being dry. Otherwise you are a slave to them and if you miss a day or two of watering, they're done for. I didn't line mine - just planted directly in them, no drain holes, but did cut a hole in the toe and planted it also. I leave mine out all winter. I never water mine - they only get the occasional rain and once in awhile the hose hits them if I happen to be watering something else near them, which hardly ever happens. I've never done cowboy boots - only work boots, but I'm thinking it would be neat to fill them with dirt and cut holes up and down the sides to plant sort of like a strawberry pot. Hi Melle, Sorry I didn't see this post. I've been offline for a while. I have a cottage area in front of my farmer's porch. I used to have the middle beds filled with daylilies and other perennials but decided since this was the area in my yard with full sun and a fence that the deer don't jump it was the best place for vegetables. We happened to take a picture from the farmer's porch roof a few years ago, so you can see what the bed layout is. We transformed 2 of the middle beds to veggies last year and then readied the 3rd bed for planting this spring, so all beds in the middle will be veggies (although I'm also leaning on using a portion of one of them to start some seeds). This is the one longer bed (to the right with the daylilies in the first picture: And this is the middle bed. I planted a pinwheel of different color lettuce in this bed and also planted nasturtium seeds around the edge. Once the lettuce was done the nasturtium took over and kept some nice color going. (I had another area where I was able to plant more lettuce to continue that little crop). Here's another pic I just found from a different angle when it was less grown in. You can really see all the beds in that area from this angle to see how the perennials, shrubs and then veggies all work together. Overall I was really happy with how it all worked out and am looking forward to adding the 3rd bed over by the arbor this spring.

Depends on where you are going to put them. Is it sunny or shady? Do you want grow flowers, veggies or just foliage. Perennials or annuals...

Veradek planters usually come with an insert that you can put in to limit volume. Personally, if I lived there, I’d fill them with Dendrobium kingianum or cymbidiums. Maybe cyclamen, begonias or fuchsias. Maybe Primula malacoides or succulents or Cineria. depends on how close to the coast.

I don't think having more volume is a bad thing. So you know what is the capacity of the containers in gallons? Your choices are essentially unlimited. You could have roses, hibiscus, Mandevilla, jasmines...I like Mandevilla/dipladenia do non stop blooms, Jasminum grandiflorum for great fragrance. I haven't grown hibiscus but I think they do bloom for a good part of the year. Roses require more maintenance and bloom in flushes so not constantly in bloom. Most of these will be perennials for you. Look around and see what is growing and blooming around in your neighborhood, what you like, stop by the local garden center..
