kids room Bathrooms Design Dilemma

White gloss cabinets and kids

Hello! Like many of you, I am in the midst of figuring out materials for 2 bathrooms to remodel. One is the master and the other is a jack and jill style bathroom for two kids (5 years apart).
I love the look of white high gloss cabinets but my designer keeps saying they do not go well with kids. She says scratches cant come out, marks, etc.
I have other high gloss furniture and its held up great so I can't decide if that is a bad idea or not.
Anyone else with young kids and white glossy cabinets for bathrooms out there??

It depends on you and your kids. Sometimes these threads delve into parenting issues. If you can teach your kids that these can be scratched easily and they tend to follow similar instructions to be careful, I don't see an issue with it.

Sochi is right on many fronts. However, the material that pops to my mind when I hear high gloss white cabinets and Luce di Luna stone is white sheet glass splash. Not plain white subways. Well, not unless .... well, many many things. Certainly not the regular old white ceramic subways. Anyhow, I'd start with the white glass sheet. If not, I'd next drift to white 1"x4" (or so) glass mosaic and then take it from there. But I'd try really really hard to get me the sheet glass splash before I moved on.

Mid America Mom - I have a glass top on that laptop/console table in the pic above and see fingerprints on that. Luckily they wipe off easily - phew! The one or two drawer fronts I've wiped off since starting to use the kitchen a couple of months ago just needed cleaning due to food splatters. I cannot see any fingerprints on the Ringhult fronts, even when I'm looking for them :-) It might be horizontal surfaces or stone and glass that show fingerprints, versus vertical glossy surfaces. OT: I'm pleasantly surprised with the FP fridge. I expected fingerprints would be showing daily. Nope, nada. I've wiped the handle a couple of times but only due to stickyness. That's it.

High gloss is not for me. Not because I don't think it can look good in certain applications, but because I would freak out at the first scratch. I learned my lesson (for me only) long ago on furniture and cabinets. In my first home I bought very expensive solid cherry coffee and end tables with a nice beautiful shiny finish. The cat went skidding over the coffee table and left a scratch about ten inches long. There was no way to hide it, buff it out, cover it. I'm better with painted or natural wood finishes that are more forgiving. If you don't have kids, dogs, cats or a spouse, it's probably fine. I remember my nephew once tried to figure out if a piece of jewelry was a real diamond by scratching the glass face of a vintage clock. Yeehaw, it wasn't a diamond but it did scratch the glass...

Oh, good catch Linda - I only use eco friendly window cleaner, no ammonia, Method or Biokleen. I use them on everything with no issues, but I failed to remember that lots of people still use products with harmful ingredients.

I would disagree. The more gloss on paint the less likely they are to scuff and the easier spills and splatters wipe off. Flat wall are a NIGHMARE! Matt finishes are all the rage but they won't hold the test of time for this very reason!!!

I have Ikea high gloss kitchen cabinets I run a catering biz from my home so often 6 people in the kitchen. My cabinets are 15 yrs old not one scratch or mark. IMO it depends on the type of material used for the finish. I have put Godmorgon bathroom cabinets in homes for a long time and the high gloss ones often no issues.

Certainly depends on the finish on the cabinetry. Some lacquer top coats can be quite durable.
