March 2018! How’s your build going?
Comments (296)Zookeeper....I was going through this thread and noticed your response to one of my earlier posts (I hardly get notifications anymore to threads I’ve participated in). You asked a question about what I would do differently in my build. At this point I would have a long list. I did go over a spattering of those things in my very long thread [Cannot procrastinate any longer...[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/cannot-procrastinate-any-longer-with-hardware-choice-dsvw-vd~5106472), it was in answer to another poster who was asking the same question (mike I believe was his name). I can’t for the life of me get all the comments of that thread to load, so I am unable to search for the spot where that diologue took place. When I find it I will post it (rather than try to recreate it). One little piece of advice I would give that has been repeated over and over on these forums regarding building is to find the right building lot with the correct exposure. This cannot be emphasized enough. If you’re into windows and light and a cheery interior, you do not want to purchase a piece of land that only allows you to place your house with the main living areas facing north! No matter how beautiful it is, resist the temptation. I have found that a southern exposure on the backside of the house (if the main living area is in the back) along with windows on the east and west sides of that same main living area will allow for the best (and continual) light throughout the entire day. I get morning sun streaming in the east side windows of the great room, then the midday sun through the south side windows, and then setting sun around the west side of that same living area (with some trees blocking some of that setting sun). It’s glorious (I love light!). No need for artificial light even on an overcast day and no need to turn on the lights until the sun goes down. When searching for land, I would look up its location wth an aerial view and if it didn’t fit my specifications for exposure, I would not even consider it (helps weed out a lot of land). Anyway, all that to say....be very picky about your lot!...See MoreMay 2018 - How’s your house build?
Comments (327)Snakes and bears, oh my! Meet with concrete contractor at house today and got eaten alive my mosquitos for the 10 min we were in the back yard. They poured the front stairs one step too short. There is just over 12” from the landing to the threshold. They are trying to come up with a solution as I do not want 2 more steps within that landing (1 plus the 4” sill step into the house). I’m holding tight to what’s listed in the plans so they will make it really right....See MoreJUNE 2018 - How’s your house build?
Comments (247)We have (some) tile! The wrong tile was ordered for my girls’ bathroom and for the laundry room. Luckily, I saw it RIGHT before it was going to be installed. It was nothing close to what I wanted in looks, but the name was really close- hence the mistake. Now we are waiting for the correct tile to come in, so those rooms and my middle son’s bathroom haven’t been started yet. (mudroom) (Powder room) (Master bath floor) (Basement bath floor) And half of a completed exterior! Nidnay, you mentioned earlier up the thread about shutters being looked at unfavorably on Houzz (I think yours are beautiful, btw, and perfect for your gorgeous house!), but I think my white hardie board with black windows get more disdain than shutters- haha. On another note, anyone else Looking at furniture? We live in a big furniture manufacturing area, so we went to a factory to look at some pieces on Thursday. Now I am trying to decide on fabrics. I’m leaning towards the ones below: Leather for sofa, light color for other sofa (it’s bulletproof fabric, so kid and pet friendly, otherwise I would never look at such a light color with 4 kids and 4 pets!). Patterned fabric and lagoon fabric (pic below this one) would be for chairs. One for the head of table dining room chairs, and one for the 2 arm chairs to go with the sofas. Trying to decide which fabric for which chairs, and keep changing my mind! We have a great room, so these pieces will all be in eye shot of each other. Lagoon...See MoreQuestion for those with a wood hood. how’s it holding up?
Comments (12)All things being equal, stainless steel is going to be easier to maintain and clean than any kind of wood hood because you just can't clean wood with the same kind of cleaning products as stainless steel. That said, wood cabinets (stained or painted) theoretically have a surface that is more durable than ordinary wood furniture. I had a kitchen with painted cabinets - very durable enamel type of spray finish that was done by a professional - and they cleaned up reasonably well from various splotches and messes as well as greasy effluent (that kitchen had not vent/hood) so areas around the stove had deposits which would otherwise have gone into the vent. I would assume it would also depend on how good your vent is and that it is the appropriate size - i.e. needs to be larger than actual cooking surface as well as what that cooking surface is and what kinds of foods you normally cook. I was going to get a wood hood cover but wound up with a copper one instead - not as easy to clean as stainless steel but my copper hood is not shiny copper so I don't have to maintain a shiny copper surface as it has a patina already :-)....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
