I had a couple of pink flamingos in my yard for awhile. I named them 'Tongue' and 'Cheek'. They finally died. I think of,embarrassment.

moissy: you wouldn't like my baseboard; no one does but us. We're old; getting older and more tired by the minute, and I do and plan to do the housekeeping. So, I want EZ to clean. I read a couple of books by professional housekeepers and they recommended a clamshell profile on the baseboards; it sheds dust at the top edge. So, keeping it modern and holding down costs, we'll use stock trimboard 1 x 4's. They'll get narrowed by the reduction for routing down the clamshell profile. Probably ends up at the 3 3/4" width, same as you see in most modern or midrange spec houses. (Although, if you want really contemporary, I'm seeing 2-inch wide or NO baseboards!) It gets the derogatory name "ranch casing" too. We also considered a simple quarter-round-over profile, and might still do that, depending on how the side casings of the doors sit against the clamshell baseboards when we get our hands on that and can see it. On the advice of some of the pro woodworkers I got Robert Lang's book "Shop Drawings for Craftsman Interior: Cabinets, Moldings & Built-Ins For Every Room In the Home." (from amazon.com) He shows baseboards in the 5 to 6 inch range, and taller, of course, for that era. Profiles are hard to describe, but some look similar to traditional Colonial ones. In one of Susanka's books she showed a new Craftsman style bungalow with baseboards 7 1/4". Get a short ruler to carry in your purse for making those casual, discreet measurements. I've gotten flagrant in places other than confined public places. I carry a 25" long retracting measure also. Whip it out, and say, "I love your xyz. Would you mind terribly if I measured it?" People (other than architects who think you're stealing their creative ideas) are flattered. LOL!

J C Penny does roller shades that are cut to fit. Not custom, but customized to your window size. They should fit your brackets, but you can order just one to do a trial on if you want. I just bought some and the instructions on how to measure your windows are easy and straight-forward. My windows are a problem because they are all 29.5" wide--too narrow for 27" and too wide for 30". Also check out Lowes and Home Depot. I know Lowes does roller shades that are cut to fit the width of your window and HD might as well. It looks from the sets of concentric circles under the brackets that other people have used the tension rods with the roller shades. I have the shades for nighttime privacy and then sheers on a tension rod for a bit more privacy in the daytime, but that's because the next house is only 15' away.

Johnmari, Thank you for sharing about the many variations on white. Now I'm a little worried. We really don't have $ to go for custom treatments. If I go with the white, maybe I should order, try one, and then understand I may have to return? Yes. Absolutely. That was JM's point and what I assumed (and shouldn't have) you already knew. You need to have a plan to check the color before you commit. Or, as Annz said, there are many other resources out there at about the same price point as JCP where you can obtain samples before you buy. My Lowe's for instance has a nice supply of take home color samples for blinds and plantation shutters. You mention a mix of mission and contemporary - again, either would work. Someone made the point the wood tones do not reflect as much light into the space -- that is accurate. If you have abundant natural light, might not be such a concern. But if you're having trouble deciding between the two, that factor is something to consider. Exterior - Again, either can work. It's a matter of your deciding which choice, white or wood, is going to fit best with the design and look you're marching towards interior as well as exterior. Maybe make a spreadsheet and list the pros and cons of each color choice to help you see which one 'fits' best at least on paper.
