We are trying to remove the wall with the sink and dishwasher but the post will have to stay right where the wall turns. We’d like the island the span the wall that’s left where the fridge is. Fridge will be double it’s width. Also not sure if we’ll be able to recess so trying to find inventive modern ways to Incorporate the beam if needed in a modern clean way.

Do you have an architect or structural engineer? The post might be able to be relocated with a longer header/beam thingy (not the technical term). Expensive but sometimes worth it.

We have had a structural engineer look at it and they may or not be able to reset in the ceiling if not will have a beam but it’s too long of a run and they have to reinforce the outside of our house etc. so just too much so I’m trying to figure out a design plan with the post actually it’ll die into the island or just behind it

I don't understand the kitchen layout you are proposing? Your island orientation as drawn doesn't make any sense to me. Are you working with a KD or do you have a layout in mind?

Also could you keep the wall between dinging and living room and remove wall between kitchen/dining to let you have an island without a post?

Can you live with a post in the location marked with the red square? I'd line the end of the island up with it, so it doesn't overlap the seating by more than 6" or so; however, the island would be only about 8', which would be space for 4 seats. (See NKBA guidelines linked below.)

I would move the fridge to the area across from the other end of the island, with the range on the back wall. This is not to scale:

I need a layout I can read and you have apost in there now so maybe just post a to scale floor plan of the kitchen with nothing in it all measurements claerly marked and that post marked . The doorway and the pass through are just poor design and i seen no purpose for either .This is my MCM kitchen the wall where the TV is is a load bearing wall so I designed a kitchen thta used that wall. Get an independant KD not some cabinet salesperson and IMO you have space for a good layout without touching the post . But I need to to scale plan of what you have now .

Ok let me work on it today and I’ll send back. Yes the pass through is the load barring wall so is the wall that the range is currently on. It’s a crazy load barring issue. I’ll try to add more pics of the area. It only let me add 4 originally

I do not think you gain anything with the wall removal. The kitchen is already open. Opening it further does not gain you anything, but it sure costs you a lot.

I understand the comments about it being disproportionate. I need to find a way to make the kitchen slightly bigger and give us more space and just incorporate the spaces around it. That is what I’m trying to figure out. I’m open to all sorts of ideas.As you can see by the pictures we have very very little counter space little bit here and there. My daughter cooks a ton and our family of five cannot function with the lack of counter space. I’m trying to figure out some sort of layout that will allow us more counter space and obviously not spend the money to take the wall out but I don’t like the look of the window and I’d like to have mostly just lowers and possibly one wall of cabinets floor to ceiling that would in case possibly a pantry. So if we don’t have to take out walls and I can find a better plan that’s the ideal. we are trying to Be as cost effective as we can in this economy but still make sure that when we’re done we have the counter space we need and it’s not so crowded around the fridge area we’re constantly bumping into each other it’s been irritable for 10 years. That’s why I moved the island in the other direction so my main thing is getting rid of the pass-through window and finding more space to move around. Originally I was just going to take out that area leave the post and extend the countertops beyond to the other side of the sink so we have the island on the other side of the pass-through wall. We have three rooms in here that are wasted the kitchen doesn’t have enough space to move around in the dining room we barely used and the hearth room we didn’t use either. The cabinets have been falling apart for about 10 years I have braces and brackets on them to hold them together and some of the drawer fronts are glued I believe they’re the original cabinets from 87. When the family before us put the hardwood floors and they Floored up to the cabinets they did not raise the cabinets and floored in the dishwasher so when we moved everything and correct issues and new cabinets we wanted to make sure that the space made more sense and it was more functional and easy to move around. The last picture is a view from the opposite side from our living room which has higher ceilings and is about the width of the kitchen and dining area put together. It also needs assistance. (It’s a mess because we have stuff moved all around from different rooms because we closed off the door from kitchen to front room as you can see in the pics. 😬)

It’s also extremely tight in the refrigerator area and the refrigerator we ordered is twice as wide as the one that’s in the space now because we have a fridge raider in the kitchen and another refrigerator in the garage that we use as well. Would like the convenience of all the food In One spot so we need to make room for that as well.

I also strongly dislike the proposed plan. But that's the only measurements of the home that have been provided. Until a full measure of the home is provided, this can go nowhere.

I am skeptical that removing walls is the way to accomplish what you want. I can see you are trying to have seating for five at the island because you have a family of five, but that island is too big for the space. Try engaging a kitchen designer and see what they can do differently with your existing space before making costly changes to existing walls. Doing a complete remodel of your kitchen is going to be expensive enough without installing large loadbearing beams. And when you remove a wall you have to fix the flooring. Do you have extra pieces to fill in gaps?

Do you have a basement where you can put your "spares" - by this I mean the unopened packages of food items that you'll use after the open one is consumed? Can you put a cabinet at the bottom of the stairs to the basement to hold some of the less frequently used items you might otherwise put in a pantry? Do you have a spare frig and/or freezer in your basement or garage? This is what past generations did when they were raising large families in small houses. And your house isn't really small.

You have my sympathy about the dishwasher being blocked in by new flooring. The previous owners of our house did that too. I am constantly telling people on this forum not to do that. :-)

We did have a designer. She took quite a bit of our money and no design. Still trying to get that back but that’s another story. The kitchen is tight in the working area. Way too tight. We have a fridge outside as well it’s annoying. Out basement is finished. We have a storage area in the basement for food storage. The biggest problem is there is no room to move in the sink fridge area but if we flip the island it’s too tight side to side and would be small this the opening.this wall on backside of kitchen is not load barring. We were trying not to move as much as we can but still need more workspace and counter space. The last picture is the living room on the backside of that kitchen wall which we are trying to lower the mantle on as economically as possible so we can move the TV possibly above the fireplace because it’s an awkward layout in the living room so we’re kind of trying to do it all in one and make these rooms make more sense.make them all be more cohesive without the kitchen being too large. I agree in that. I just need a new vision.

Looking forward to your measured diagram, but one thought occurred to me: a fridge twice as wide is going to eat up even more potential counter-space. It's basic, unalterable geometry. Another option would be a fridge-only column, with a couple under cabinet freezers.

Do you have a pantry, or is that the double door cabinet? Saving money in eliminating a load-bearing wall will open up better options.

Im not a designer, but i think the least expensive option is to make that passthru wider and lower it to counter height. i would remove the wall to the hearth room/dining room. now you will have the look of an open kitchen your hearth room could now be your dining area and your new passthru could have an extended countertop for seating in the old dining room.
