Comments (6)I just picked a second crop of kale buds and stems, two weeks after the first crop. I snapped the stems off by hand, rather than cutting them. That allowed me to feel for the point where the stem is crisp, and just take that part of the stem. I just cut them into 2 inch lengths, boil them for a couple of minutes until they are tender, drain and stuff them into ball mason jars, and freeze them. They are delicious. Milder than mustard, no strong taste like broccoli. And no pests at all at this time of year. Comments (8)All bets are off for green house or house grown plants. For open field growing. All fruits are perennials and most vegetables are annuals or biennials. There are many tropical perennials in the vegetable group but in most of North American , they are grown as annuals. That includes fruiting vegetables like tomatoes and peppers and root vegetables like sweet potatoes. Kale will go until it sends up a seed head, which normally happens in the spring ( increasing daylight) It will stand mild freezes but not hard frozen ground. Peas (Pisum) like cool damp weather. tolerate frost but not hard freezes. Beans go down with the first frost. In the south heat can be a problem in midsummer for many crops, but should not bother you in New York State. I doubt that you ever see 30 or more days of triple digit temps. There are many annual flowers, even perennials have their season. I doubt that you have roses blooming in january unless you are using a green house. Comments (17)I'm growing it for the first time this year. Heard my guy at the farmer's market was retiring and ordered some seeds in July. Sowed some in a windowbox I have outside, if it gets really cold I'll just bring them inside...I absolutely love this kale and the thought of going without it this year is too depressing to contemplate! I have a great fasule recipe adapted from my mom's escarole soup. I like tuscan kale 100 times more than escarole anyway! Very simple, but delicious. Tuscan Kale and Cannelini Fasule 2-4 Tbs olive oil 4-6 Cloves of garlic smashed or sliced 1/2 to 1 lb kale leaves 4-6 C. Vegetable or chicken stock 1 can white cannelini (kidney) beans Olive oil to taste Parmesan cheese to taste Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste Crusty bread for dunking or as a crouton! Heat olive oil on medium/high heat in the bottom of stock pot. Add garlic and sautee 3-5 minutes. Add kale a little bit at a time, moving the wilted leaves to the side and adding new leaves as you go. Add more olive oil if it gets dry at the bottom of the pot. When leaves have lost about half their original size, add stock. Add beans. Simmer until leaves are tender, but not completely soggy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve soup hot with grated parmesan cheese grated and a splash of olive oil. And some hot crusty bread, of course! :) Heaven. And it keeps in the freezer for months. I usually make a ton in the summer and take it to work all winter. Now hopefully I will be harvesting well into the winter if things go well....See MoreKale question
Comments (6)Back to the original question, yes, kale will do that resprouting thing along with lots of other plants, including celery and green onions. Kales in socal can look like they've nearly died in summer and then suddenly perk up and start putting out juicy new leaves over the winter.
