How to resolve this soffit above the fridge/desk area?
Comments (12)If possible, I would remove the soffits. However, if you cannot remove them, then I would put cabinets in front of them. Either: * put in cabinets that are deep enough to go from the outside of the refrigerator & pantry to the soffit OR * put in two cabinets, the ones at the top (in front of the soffit) would be only 12" or so deep and the ones below would be 24" deep and down to the top of the refrigerator & pantry cabinet. On the ends, simply put a finished panel to hide it...probably a panel the entire height to make it look like one piece rather than two different pieces. You'll have to do it anyway on the refrigerator end to enclose it. Just repeat it on the pantry end as well...it'll probably be approx 3/4". As to the rest of the kitchen, you could clad the soffit in matching wood panels or veneer--if they wouldn't stick out too far...it depends on the depth of the soffit compared to the soffit. You could then put in crown molding above all the cabinetry in the kitchen at the ceiling. Will you be DIYing it? If so, and there's nothing in the soffit, you might be able to take it down yourself and re-frame & drywall it. But, most likely there's at least plumbing inside soffits...that's usually the reason you have a soffit in the first place....See MoreCould you share photos of kitchen desk area?
Comments (4)Last kitchen. The upper cabinets on either side, plus a full drawer base held most of my clutter. The bulletin board was great for invitations, photos, appointment reminders. I had a large calendar on the desk, and plenty of outlets for charging. Like the first photo, my new desk area is almost identical with the exception of the drawers base. It's mot as large and I miss those larger drawers. however, I do have a huge corner cabinet off to the left, in addition to the two that flank the shelves that are used for junk. The trick to organization is the baskets. I don't have a bulletin board over this desk because the electrician put the phone jack and electrical outlet right over the desk. Instead, I put a large board in the laundry room. One tip that I have used in my last two homes. Don't settle for a normal desk piece, and don't let the cabinet guys hang it to low if you are a tall person. I got a unit that has a taller drawer. The standard units are not deep enough to hold today's phone books. Because I am taller, I wanted more knee room under the desk. I did the same with my bathroom vanity. Higher and taller drawer. You can also run your desk unit the same height as your base units and use a stool under the desk, instead of a chair. I've done that before! Bath...See MoreIdeas for a kitchen desk area?
Comments (18)Okay, I'm picking up what (most of) you are putting down. I neatened it up. I consolidated. I went through the kids' pencil jars and found things that haven't been seen in years. Why were we holding on to a pencil that was 1/2" long? Or a single, ancient brown crayon? I don't know. It looks better and I'm going to try to find a cheap and cheerful version of what jlc712 suggested. Anniecat, I read your response and like a bratty kid, thought, "I don't want to move the cookbooks!!!" I practically stomped my foot. And then I moved them. It's so much better. And besides, who am I kidding? I never use them. Lukkirish, all my samples live in a shoe box. Super classy, right? It would nice to have a place for them. I think they can go in a drawer. MagdalenaLee, you are right, I shouldn't try to force it. Thank you all for your great replies and ideas. I also neatened the kitty bowls. We're ditching the radio for something else soon. The drawers are getting cleaned out and organized. I'll get a power strip and something to hold the electronics....See MoreThoughts on kitchen desk/work/storage area
Comments (7)Funky camper: thank you for the notes/ideas! I read the note about the basket for library books and wondered if you could see into my living room (where the basket of library books is generally underfoot). I've printed out your marked-up photo. Kelleg, my sister-in-law did something similar and I really like their standing desk (now I know the term!). I've been spending this afternoon trying to figure out if I could somehow combine the laptop and phone charging with a wine bar. Just because I don't [shouldn't] use those things at the same time doesn't mean I can't have them in the same space, right? I realized that I'd been tempted by lots of nice looking kitchen desks in photos but that I can't envision myself sitting there (and I think the kids have lots of other places to sit)....See MoreHU-188348974
