Adjustable vs non-adjustable toilet flapper valve

I've read adjustable flappers valves are for toilets made 1994 and up.

Non-adjustable flappers are for toilets made before 1994.

With the adjustable ones, you can adjust how long the flapper stays open. Just curious, but why would you want to do that? Hypothetically, what would happen if you put a non-adjustable in a 1994-up toilet? Would it stay open too long, or not open for long enough?

Last time I replaced a flapper, I used an adjustable one, but I don't think I messed with the adjustment. It's just set to max.
